You're Being Lied to About Electric Cars

How much longer does anyone thing the EV rebates are going to be offered ? The Fed has stopped buying EV's mostly because they don't have anyone to fix them when they break down is what I think. The EV chargers that were a big part of the Inflation Reduction Act are no longer happening so charger infrastructure will be affected. I'm not sure it matters as most EV drivers use home chargers.

Bill
tesla became the operating standard and any EV will be compatible with it. the off brand chargers will go extinct. this would have happened regardless of government policy and in fact has largely already happened.

I bet if the EV tax credit or what ever it is called that adds up to $7500 off the car gets eliminated Tesla could be the only company making ev's in America. I'm sure the things I didn't like about the model y are trivial. One thing that was odd is the mirrors are so small. Looking at the rear view mirror is a view between the back seats. I guess Tesla wants you to learn to trust the dash screen, lol.

There are several EVs - such as the Polestar 3 - that don't have a rearview mirror at all - because it's entirely camera based - it has a rearview mirror but it's displaying a stream from the rear camera - there is no actual rear window. There's no actual legal requirement for a rearview mirror - the Cybertruck for example - uses a rearview camera on the screen when the bed cover is closed - because the rear-view mirror isn't useable when the bedcover is closed. This will become more common in the future. Autonomous vehicles don't have any mirrors for example - no rear view mirror - no side view mirrors - such as Waymo vehicles - since there's never a human driving the vehicle. Same with the upcoming Cybercab - no mirrors of any kind. This is the future. In all current Tesla vehicles - the mirrors aren't necessary at all - flip a turn signal on and the image displays on the center screen - and the left or right section of the image has an opaque red bar that flashes when there's anyone in the blind spot - it takes some getting used to - but once you adapt - you realize there's not really any need for the mirrors since the camera streams are better with wider angle views.

Yup, it would definitely take some getting use to for me. Tesla sent me a text letting me know the model y I looked at now has an additional $5000 discount. The discount and the tax credit equal $12,500. It looks like the price is close to $31,000 which seems to low so I guess I'm missing something.

What's the deadline before that price is no longer available? Typically there's a date deadline. Bottom line though, the closer we get to end of Q1 - the better the deals will be. Feel free to DM me the details if you want a second set of eyes.

EDIT: I see it now - increased inventory discounts for the outgoing MYs:

There's no actual legal requirement for a rearview mirror
I believe this may vary state by state.
In TX:
Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such motor vehicle.
Only ONE mirror is required:
● Exterior Mirror
● Interior Mirror
Mirrors should not be cracked, peeled, tarnished, or improper/loosely mounted.

Solar and wind not very good after dark in Michigan. Nuclear plants excellent all the time. They can supply the Electrical energy needed to charge electric cars 24 X 7, 360 days a year.

Another barrier for those on the road looking to charge their cars. First the thieves were making them unusable by stealing the copper wiring. Now those who hate Musk are setting them on fire.

My C8 Corvette has the camera feed projected on to the rear view mirror. Except when I put the top down I lose that camera and flip the mirror to old-Fashioned style.

I received another text from Tesla. This text was from the guy at Tesla Palm Springs who let me know they were discounting some model y demo vehicles so it's getting closer to $30,000 but when you remove the gas savings and tax credit it's over $40,000.

GM is taking the tax credit off at purchase. I'm not sure if Tesla does this.

Yes, Tesla does this - every automaker does this now - it's a checkbox on the pricing page on the Tesla inventory website as to whether you want to include the federal tax credit eligibility or not when looking at available inventory. By default, it's typically enabled when applicable given there are price maximums and other qualifiers that determine whether the vehicle itself is eligible for the federal tax credit. I always turn off the gas savings as I've always felt that is somewhat deceiving when it comes to representing the real out the door price of the vehicle itself.

An innovation that can be used to reduce electrical utility bills in areas with big differentials between low demand energy pricing and high demand energy pricing
The nice thing about this innovation is the low cost of entry and no expensive set up

Chinese EV sales humming in Australia

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/03/04/australia-chinese-electric-vehicles-byd/

Chinese EVs are suddenly everywhere. BYD in particular is booming.
Sales rose by 65 percent last year, The rapid growth of Chinese models means EVs now account for 10 percent of new-car sales in Australia

"The couple marveled at how inexpensive Chinese electric vehicles are proving popular in Australia yet are unavailable in the United states."

These are cheap at the expense of the employees and environment all things considered. The PRC doesn't care how the materials are processed regarding the environment and definitely use employees as an expendable item instead of a person.

Nope. It's more about China's ability to exploit their people and environment to create a decent product for very little compared to the free world, imo.

Could be, but man they are creating some compelling EV products in China. Kyle Connor recently did a whirlwind Chinese EV tour, testing several models over there. Here's but one of many videos that peeked my interest - Zeekr (owned by Geely) has produced a new LFP battery variant affectionately called the Golden Battery - that can charge from 10-80% in under ten minutes (they actually run a test in the below video), and a full 0-100% charge in roughly 20-22 minutes. Granted, what we don't yet know is longevity with this steep charging curve, but it's impressive in and of itself regardless:

A little history on Geely

Geely was founded in 1986 as a refrigerator parts company, before transitioning to motorcycles in 1994 and entering the automotive industry in 1997. ZGH as a holding company was founded in 2003. As of 2023, the company ranks 225 in the 2023 Fortune Global 500 list of the world's largest companies.[2] In 2024, the group produced a total of 3.33 million vehicles globally, including 1.48 million plug-in electric vehicles.[12]

The company manufactures and sells vehicles under the brands of Geely, Lynk & Co and Zeekr brands, which are part of the Geely Auto Group business unit, along with its subsidiaries and joint ventures such as Volvo Cars, Polestar, Proton, Smart and Lotus, as well as commercial vehicles under the London EV Company, Radar Auto / Riddara and Farizon brands. It produces motorcycles under its subsidiaries Zhejiang Geely Ming Industrial (Jiming and Geely), Qianjiang Motorcycle (QJMotor and Keeway), and Benelli. It also holds a 17% stake in Aston Martin and owns half of Horse Powertrain, an engine manufacturing joint venture with Renault.[13][14]

Hold whatever attitude you want about Chinese companies

Geely has taken risks, bought companies other manufactures no longer wanted (Volvo and Lotus) and has become a dominant manufacture of vehicles around the world

They developed the Golden Battery inhouse using a battery design everybody else decided against

Their innovation and risk taking has paid off for them in the past

It is not a company to bet against

Reminds me of lighting a charcoal grill in 30 seconds with Liquid Oxygen

Yeah, except for the minor fact that LFP battery chemistry has almost zero fire risk.

With many EPA regulations recently lifted in all 50 States , probable tariffs bringing vehicle manufacturing back to the USA, my bet is my favorites, the v 6 and v 8 will make a come back.

Regarding buying a Tesla, I don't know if it's a good fit anymore as some moron might decide to take their frustrations out on a Tesla. It probably doesn't happen too often but the trend seems to suggest it's a rising issue in some crazy groups.

I didn't notice this while test driving a Tesla but our recent Tesla Uber ride had me hitting my head on the back seat door jamb. The back seat is comfortable but the door jamb drops too much, imo.

It will be interesting to see how Climate Change Credits for automakers are handled
The sale of these credits has contributed to the bottom line of various EV Manufacturers

I think you are talking about regulatory tax credits. It will likely change as regulations change. It isn't unexpected and has been discussed in ways to receive a tax credit on an ev. This is about all that can be said about it on Tug, imo. So zip it, zip, zip, zip, lol. ;)

Fortunately we haven’t seen any of the anti-Tesla sentiments in our area yet. From what I’ve seen most of it seems centered on the CT owners since that was already a polarizing model due to its design. There are some killer discounts on the outgoing MYs right now. I may end up picking up a new MYP myself before end of month.
