You have a gas pump capable of fueling a vehicle at 10 gallons a minute. You have a level 3 EV charger capable of charging at 50 to 500 kw depending on the charger taking anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to completely energize the battery.

In the 15 minutes it took you to energize your battery, a gas pump is capable of delivering 150 gallons.
For my personal research, I timed myself how long it takes to fuel up at a gas station. From the time it took me to drive into the gas station, fill up, and then exit the gas station (there was no lineup at that time), it was under five minutes. I estimate for myself that I fill up about twice every three weeks. That calculates to just under three hours per year.

Now to compare and contrast that with how much time I would spend putting electricity into either a PHEV or BEV, well, there are still a number of factors to consider. But the main thing for me rather than money is time. Like they say, "Time is money." So, would it be worth it for me to invest in a PHEV or BEV (or even a regular hybrid)? I don't know just yet. I still have to figure this out. But I thank you all for all your input about the pros and cons of each vehicle while I do personal research.

still have to factor in the ability to "fill up" at home! with as little as you drive, might reduce your time at the pump to zero!

"cost you more NOT to buy it" =D

What messes ol' Bill and many others is the vast majority of EV drivers charge at home at the same price a public charge pays. Essentially wholesale fuel.

This came up while talking to a guy doing a commercial renovation. The business is required to install one public charger. They have room for eight more. The plan is to wait and see if the charger makes any money. If public chargers don't cost to charge why would anyone want to add public chargers to their business ?

I was reading that our city has over 120 charging ports with about 20% of them free to use. So this is a business killer.

I get that anyone that can have a home charging port probably does even if it's an extension cord plugged into a 110v wall outlet. I certainly would have a level 2 or 3 charger if I went that way.

My objections to buying an EV now is I like what I like. An EV isn't in any of the categories of what I like other than speed maybe. I don't owe anything on any of our vehicles and the insurance is cheap compared to a Tesla. Even though I have enough money to purchase a Tesla, it would feel like a waste of money in that I don't need one or want one. I don't drive as much as I did other than the long road trips where I like the luxury feel of my Lincoln Town Car and the ability to fill up at numerous places in any climate.

We were trying to park at the WM Seaside and a Tesla was taking up two spots near the elevator entrance. Normally, a person would just say what an a** and not really care too much but being it is a Tesla doing this, is the reaction worse ? What do you think ?

How do you know that there weren't cars on both sides allowing only this space available when this driver arrived? Why assume the worst?

It might be. . . .

That the driver had just borrowed the Tesla, and wanted to return it blemish free. Or...

Maybe the owner/driver had recently bought the Tesla and had never owned a +- $100,000 vehicle and was trying to keep parking lot dings off it as long as possible. Or...

The driver or their passenger are handicapped and need the extra space to have a wheelchair beside the car for them. Handicap spaces are NOT always available. Or...

Maybe Bill is just judgmental of others, like he is here.

In all fairness, that's a pic of a Tesla 3, which is about $40-50k.

As of next Friday we will be an all EV family with my wife driving our Model 3 and me in a new Ford Lightning XLT standard range. I do tow fairly frequently so it will be interesting to see how this shakes down. My 16 year did spend his summer job money on a beater Mazda to learn to drive on, so I can always borrow the keys from him if need be I guess...

That looks like it is parked on the roof level, which most people try and avoid because of weather.

I don't know anyone towing with the new Lightning but my niece's husband has a Rivian that tows a boat to Anacortes occasionally. They live about 90 miles away and he likes to charge up a long the way before crossing I-5 to be safe. It's a decent sized aluminum ocean boat that weighs maybe 5000 to 6000 pounds. I think the Rivian would make it but it makes sense to have some power left when getting to Anacortes to goof around.

It's kind of interesting that the towing capacity regarding power is there but the range drops so much. I can tow a 10,000 pound Cabin Crusier about 300 miles to West Port and still have a third to a quarter tank of diesel left.

We usually park on the top floor. No weather in August so far but sometimes a seagull turd here and there, lol.

Wow, if that's how well a Tesla can stay between the lines then I'd be leery of it's FSD capabilities on the road :D :D

FSD doesn’t perform parking - that is a feature called AutoPark - which has nothing to do with FSD - and AutoPark would never park the way that vehicle is parked - that was obviously a human driver.

Apparently you didn't understand it was a joke (the grinning emoji's after it). When I initially posted it I was going to add in parenthesis that it was a joke but thought I didn't really need to.

Yes, one of the challenges with BEVs is that they are much more efficient than ICE vehicles (80-90% vs 20-40%). As a result, the amount of energy needed and stored to power the BEV is much lower - so when adding weight and resistance - the negative impact on energy consumption is more substantial.

One gallon of gas is equivalent to 33.7kwh of energy. Our MY LR has a 82kw battery pack (78kw usable). Most CUVs, such as a Honda CR-V, have around a 15 gallon gas tank in comparison - which is the equivalent of 15*33.7=505kw of pack energy. The CR-V has a max range of 600 miles though, so if we take half of that, we’re around 252kw of pack energy. Still more than three times the equivalent amount when compared to the 82kw pack in the MY LR, because the BEV is so much more efficient per unit of energy. However, even with greater efficiency, which allows for less energy consumption, when adding significantly more weight and/or resistance (which raises coefficient of drag) for towing, that 82kw doesn’t go nearly as far as the 252kw equivalent.

Yeah, one tesla driver parking in two spots completely defines them. Unlike generations of BMW driver's reputations. For hundreds of more "drivers taking up two spots" memes, take a ten second look at the internet.

That wasn't the point. I was wondering if a non-ev parked like the Tesla did, would you feel the same regarding the vehicle taking up two spaces ? When we saw this, the top floor area of parking near the wall is closest to the elevators. It kind of pissed us off that someone without a handicap placard would park like this considering how close these spots are to the elevators.

Because it was a Tesla, I think for us anyway, there was just a bit more dislike than if it were a regular car because it just seems like some entitled a** in a Tesla that could easily fit in a parking spot, trying to protect their car. The truth is we would think anyone parking this way so close to the elevators is an a**, but for some reason, a Tesla gets more hate which is probably why people vandalize Tesla's at a higher rate than a clunker.
