I just noticed many (or most) of you are NOT using hard mode. Comparing results between the modes is like comparing rugby to football. They are 2 completely different games.

I think I agree with you, but not sure exactly what you mean.

So, if most of us are not playing in hard mode, we are playing the same game and the comparisons are valid. I think most of us are playing for fun and we enjoy the daily dialogue with each other. We actually play against ourselves and post our results. It’s not a competition in which we’re competing against each other.

If what I'm seeing is the easy stuff, I can only imagine what kind of fresh hell the hard mode is. There is no bonus for scoring with fewer words other than to say "I did it in..." You can just as easily eat it tomorrow, and wash out completely. So there isn't much skill involved that I have seen. This is a frustrating game that basically says, "You have six tries to tell me which word I'm thinking of - with absolutely no hints, and no clues, other than to tell you if a letter you guessed is in the word. It may be there more than once, maybe even twice more, but you'll have to venture a guess to find out. And oh yeah - each guess has to be a word in our database." Who came up with this?

Yeah, nothing to it.

Hard mode is harder in that you have fewer guesses for unknown letters in each word entry. I try to play in "hard" mode even tho I don't have it set for the game to enforce it on me. I don't think people are getting the answer in fewer guesses. As @Rolltydr says we are mainly playing against ourselves to see if we're better than the day before. Hard mode makes me think of viable words containing the letters I found. Frustrating at times for sure...

I didn't mean to attack anyone. I just recently learned I was playing hard mode when I asked someone about the asterisk (*) by my shared results. I was keyed in here by people discussing starter words. So here's what I understand:

You get the same word in either mode, so the word is not "harder."

Hard mode makes you continue to use letters you found on your subsequent guesses. I noticed that people use completely different words, with none of the letters they used and found (yellow/green) previously. You cannot do this in hard mode. Doing this allows you to eliminate a lot of letters and almost assures you not "losing", because in 5 tries you can theoretically use 25 of 26 letters in 5 tries with a final 6th guess allowed. Doing this also makes it harder (if not impossible) to get the word in 2 or 3 tries, because you are wasting words that don't have the known letter just to burn more letters.

They are just different ways to play a similar game. So if you are frustrated that it always takes you 5 or 6 tries, you may want to risk using hard mode, and go out on a limb.

Four

The most they got from me today was the equivalent of a Costco sample. Though, like Costco, if you collect enough of them, they could pass as a mid-day snack.

After PHASE, the word had to xSAxE. USAGE was the only word I could think of that fit that pattern. A mild bit of frustration to feed the Wordle gods, but that was all. Though if enough people had the same reaction, in the aggregate the gods might meet their daily needs.

It was difficult for me today, one could say "hard" if that is the correct word ? As I had zero consonants for the first three guesses. I try and use the letters discovered in each guess, but occasionally drop in an elimination word. The same with letters that have "greyed" out, I want to avoid them to churn through the unused letters.

Three. Pleasantly surprised. David, how do you set for hard mode? I was unaware there were options. (Nevermind. I found it in settings. Will try tomorrow. I think I do it that way most of the time anyway. I play this game to challenge my brain.)

Another four.
Let‘s BEGIN with an E and G out of position. I thought I might find an EGRET but just ruled out two more placement options for the E and G. Since they don’t start the word, let’s see if they end it with JUDGE. Yes! So, I have either UxxGE or xxUGE. I can’t think of any words with the latter. I see USAGE with the former so I go with it and it was a very good usage of my time.

Four. I think it might have been the only word that fit after my third entry, but almost no chance that I would have gotten it on the third try. Lots of possibilities on that line.

4 for me. I didn't see I was using a letter In the same position as my previous guess. Likely would still have taken it 4 tho,'
I thought my 3rd guess was a rather good one.
