You're Being Lied to About Electric Cars

I am seeing multiple new Lucid vehicles in my area
This area has never been a price driven area as much as a trend driven area
The Lucid is American made
Has distinctive looks
And in the mind of the people I have talked to about their vehicle
It is not a Tesla
The CT is not a factor
This is not the pickup crowd

No doubt both Lucid and Rivian will benefit from the Tesla drama. They are both very well put together EVs - I have driven a Lucid Air GT and both the Rivian R1T and the R1S. They are all just too pricey for me personally. I do have a day zero reservation for a Rivian R2 that should become available in late 2026 best estimate. I had a reservation on a Lucid Air Pure that came up last year but at $90k for the options I wanted, it was just too pricey, so I had my deposit refunded.

I may end up in a pre-owned R1S or R1T since I like that size pickup/SUV for what I need and I prefer to sit up higher than a car.

The Tesla drama is just one part of the decision for my area
The Tesla has become a "family" car
The Model S has become "old" and lacking in style in their eyes
Musk put his design chops into the CT and forgot the group that got him off the ground
A roadster would have been well received IMHO
Lucid is fresh and has a certain panache
In several years it will be something else that has the attention of this group

ou've seen CT PPF wraps - not paint. No CTs are painted. PPF wraps are how people change the looks of their vehicles these days - while protecting the original paint.

The CT isn't painted so there isn't any paint to protect, right ? If it were me as the owner of the CT I would go with paint as it would last way longer than a vinyl wrap.

The robots are coming, and there's no stopping it. Likely within the next 20 years, humans working will become optional thanks to embodied AI.

Maybe. Maybe not. I have a bad feeling about this. Nothing would prevent a person from figuring out how to make a good robot a bad robot.

Bill

I'd still buy a M3 or a MY today, or any of the upcoming "normal" models. The CT is taking the brunt of the abuse so to speak. I'm also unwilling to give up FSD, as it has become amazingly good the past year or so now. No other vehicle on the road here in the US is even remotely close to FSD IME, and this is the worst it's ever going to be, it's only going to get better. I care more about the safety of the vehicle and those within it, my family members, and Tesla's are the safest vehicles on the road today IMHO. Just my two cents of course.

I'm still pleased with my BMW. Hopefully times will change so that I can convince myself to buy a Tesla…perhaps after Elon is evicted from the board and the stock recovers.

As for the robots, unless they have the three laws I'm not sure I'd trust them to clean my floors.

Great News.
The Cybertruck is made in America, with American workers. Interesting that you would think that poor sales which will most likely result in layoffs for American workers is "Great News". :(

Anything to hurt EM. Especially if it shows his thought process was faulty. And how many Federal Workers and their families has he harmed.

Not a vinyl wrap, PPF or Paint Protection Film.
More reliable than vinyl, self repairing, easier to install, and comes in virtually any color or pattern - including clear wraps. Vinyl wrap is old school. Even most people who own painted vehicles use PPF to change the look on their vehicle these days.

I doubt it because most insurance companies don't cover PPF or wraps as part of the vehicle like paint. I didn't know that PPF came in patterns. I had thought it was clear or solid colors only.

But you loved him last year, right ?

Bill

Nope. I have always thought he was an A*s*ole.

Fair enough. I've always thought of him as an innovator , explorer and creator of fantastic tech. That's why I like him.

I wouldn't say I like the person he is, but I do admire his innovations and how he has worked to advance technology in many areas.

Kurt

So you are cheering for putting many regular Americans out of jobs just to hurt EM. Got it.

Kurt
Yeah, Musk is already putting many regular Americans out of work and with great glee! Where's my chainsaw.....

I wonder how many of those virtue signaling giving up their Telsa's or damaging those belonging to others, will secretly buy his robots to do manual labor inside their homes. That way no one can see them being hypocrites.

I absolutely want a robot. I fully expect conditions to change by the time they're released and tested for consumer use, so I'm not particularly concerned. I'm sure other companies will release robots in time as well.

What frustrates me is that I was forced to purchase Starlink after the fire, when we had no other communication options. At least it's a monthly fee that can be canceled soon.

Regarding Teslas, many other manufacturers exist. Ultimately, a car is just transportation from point A to point B. Even though I live in LA, a car doesn't define my identity or self-worth. I don't need to accelerate from 0-60 in two seconds to compensate for shortcomings, unlike many others.

I want a robot dog.

How was the Starlink service ? I was thinking of getting this for our cabin. We have no phone or internet service of any kind with the exception of satellite.

It would not fix all the flaws of the CT but at least it would look much better https://electrek.co/2025/04/04/tesla-should-pivot-cybertruck-to-this/
Flaws of the CT? Do tell. Granted, it's ugly, but beyond that, I'm curious what you mean by flaws that isn't subjective in nature.

BTW, Fred Lambert, who writes most of the anti-Tesla content for Electrek - has been anti-Tesla for years now. Try to find a recent article where Fred has anything positive to say about Tesla - you'll struggle to do so. Yet despite that, Tesla produces the best selling car in the world for two years running. Point being, his motives should be examined.

Last week Tesla removed the Range Extender order option from the configurator. That's interesting given one of the biggest detractors from the CT crowd was that the topline model originally advertised a 500 mile range. This is particularly important for towing/hauling, yet they just removed the Range Extender option which was the only way to provide more range for towing/hauling. No real mention on the why for this removal. Is the sales volume low enough that bringing this option to market no longer makes any financial sense? Were there engineering challenges implementing a bed based range extender? Has there been a battery chemistry breakthrough with the 4680 packs that will enable a "long range" CT model for towing/hauling?

Apart from the looks and the much higher cost, one of the primary reasons I'd shy away from the CT is the lack of range. If I could get a true 500-mile range for $80k, that's worth considering, but at 300 miles of range, not so much.

Stop right there. That's enough. This isn't a science experiment, it’s a business. Tesla could have sold considerably more vehicles had they simply packaged this model in a way consumers would want to purchase. They didn't. They failed.

A business needs more than good tech.
