There's a heated debate - do you do laundry on vacation?

I have ended up throwing clothing away while on vacation, but it was never planned. I'll find underwear that is starting to get holes. On this trip I discovered a nightgown I'd brought was past it's time, so it ended up in the trash. A couple of years ago my daughter made me throw out one of my favorite skirts as it was completely frayed at the bottom. Oh, and then there was the time my walking shorts gave out on me completely.

I happen to catch a heated debate on another travel board about doing laundry. Don't think I have ever seen this one on our forums. Probably one of those differences between TS and Hotel travelers. Kinda like cooking on vacation.

I always do laundry on vacation. If I have a 7 night stay, I usually pack for 4 days and do laundry in between. Easier if in-room washer/dryer but will still go find the community one if needed.

Also on that thread, someone said they will do laundry, but refuse to wash any undergarments as you never know what is lurking in washers that are community used. Never thought about that and will probably keep it out of my mind purposely on our next trip.

Curious, are there any timeshares that won't do laundry?

I definitely do laundry on vaca and have zero qualms about my undies encountering dangerous lurkers. To me, that’s odd paranoia. If opening the washer brings unpleasant aroma, I might not use it at all, but the idea that unscented dangers are waiting to seize on my dainties is chuckle worthy.

i would not likely leave room for community laundry, however. I like convenience, and hauling laundry is not convenient,

We much prefer to have laundry facilities on vacation and pack lighter. It also helps when you travel with someone like our 12 year old son who once brought only the shirt on his back for a week’s stay and recently only brought one pair of underwear.

OMG boys-this made me LOL IRL . And kids of TS owners get very used to having laundry done-our son routinely asks if laundry will be done during trip and where we are staying-he's got his packing down to a minimum (week stay? 4 pairs of undies/shorts/shirts/socks as laundry will be done 1/2 way and probably last night).

It is more relaxing for me to come home with less to do after we unpack.

This is me too!! I will prolong our stay at vacation resort which has meant coming home 11 pm night before I have to be at work by 8 am next day-no time for laundry if out of undies LOL.

Our German friends from Cologne do the underwear/old tee shirt trick too.

I don't see why this should be a heated debate. It's a matter of different strokes for different folks. As for us, yeah, we do laundry. It's cheaper than paying a checked baggage fee for extra clothes.

As for those who choose not to do laundry on their vacation, I totally understand and respect your choice and reasons for it. You won't get any heated debate from me. To each his own.

Just what I thought when I posted this.....most of us do laundry. But, what surprised me was the number of you that did it purposely to come home with clean clothes. I thought my husband was the only one that did that!!!!

We'll spend most of June (23 days) in Europe...
We plan to do laundry on day # 5, 10, 15 & 20 --
Zermatt-Switzerland, Munich, Innsbruck & Vienna.

These happen to fall on 2N stays in hotels, so we'll
either use the hotel or find a wash + fold service.

To save $$, we'll likely do the undies in the sink
and send out only the "good" stuff.

For us, you are correct. But the debate on the other vacation forum was feisty! One person asked about laundry facilities at a hotel, someone else chimed in with a fairly rude response that insinuated that OP was off their rocker for even thinking such a thing since vacations are about getting away from daily tasks and it ran amuck from there.

Well if the washer and dryer is in the room I do laundry, if I have to go to a laundry room then I'm less inclined to do it unless I am very far from home
and flying and packing light. Otherwise if it's a drive to vacation I'm not schlepping my dirty clothes to the laundry room and spending time sitting in a hot room to do laundry, but throwing it in the stackable is a no brainer.

People who use hotels for their vacations are quite different than those who prefer timeshares, IMO. I'm guessing that was one of the major factors of it being a "feisty" discussion on that other board. In either case, I think it is a silly topic to get up in arms about -- live and let live.

I have never done that and never had an issue, but then again I don't throw a load in and let it sit there for a long time after the cycle is finished -- I find that rude when others do so.

Yep, I agree. It's not hard to keep an eye on the clock.

When we do a one week "drive-to" vacation, I will pack only 2 days of clothes plus the one I wear. So that gives me 3 sets of clothes and we can wash every day or every other day. In the morning or evening if we're in the unit, we can watch TV, listen to music, talk, surf the internet while the in-unit washer/dryer is running.

I also remember her undie advice. On occasion, I've put it into practice.

On a recent Disney cruise since everything (including laundry payment) was linked to your keycard/app I would get a notification when the cycle was done. I thought that was pretty cool.

College was last time I used community washers and from that experience, I would stay with my stuff. It has been a long time since I’ve trusted the masses to care about property of others. There are occasional reminders along the life path that nobody but me cares about my belongings. If it matters to me, I keep it safe.

It would upset me to find my clean clothes dumped out of a washer onto floor of laundromat. Sitting with them while on vacay would be annoying. Were laundromat normal habit for me, not as annoying. Washer and dryer were first purchases in first apartment after college, so community laundry is long term avoidance.

Seems more and more resorts (Disney included) have their laundry connected to an app:-can see what machines are available, run times, set notice when cycle up etc.
