There's a heated debate - do you do laundry on vacation?

We have to fly from DTW to EYW, so only bring a carryon each to lower travel costs. Thats easily enough for one week in Key West. So if we stay longer and don't rent one week, then we do laundry for the second week.

What I find most interesting in this thread is how many people wear underwear and even discuss their cleaning cycle. Haha

Pack less. Do laundry or use a local service more. Many cities have drop off laundry services where they wash and fold for an economical price. Easy. Low stress.

What makes the choice of doing laundry or not during a vacation a matter of contention? Very sad. Embrace diversity and respect individual preferences, allowing people to make their own choices without judgment. Yep, even though I know my way is the only right way. Haha

Travel more and keep your underwear fresh.

I'm a pretty aggressively light packer for trips, and definitely plan on doing laundry.

I think not wearing underwear is taking that philosophy a bridge too far - a few days worth doesn't take up much space in a carry-on... ;)

Formerly: Marriott, ILX, Westin, Diamond, Worldmark. Timeshare free as of 12/24.
We've been going to Florida for 7 weeks in Jan and Feb.

My wife doesn't like me to wear my underwear for more than 4 days so we do laundry.
After Cliff packs I sneak in underwear to last until the laundry day I have pre-planned for us. Of course that assumes he changes his underwear daily like a normal person, not like a cowboy out on the range!

When I used to travel for work 3 weeks at a time changing hotels/cities every couple of days, it was substantially cheaper to buy new "shorts" than wash.

Might be, but it allowed me to catch some old Fern Modena remembrances. They're welcome, now and then.

Question? How often do you laundry at home??????? We do laundry weekly (every six (6) days; just the two (2) of us.

Maybe they will be pitching a miracle travel laundry service....

It depends on the length of the trip, but we usually do laundry while traveling

Our trips are often a month or more so we definitely do laundry.

I like to come home with clean clothes.
Agreed! Such a wonderful paradigm-shift coming home and unpacking the suitcase right into the chest of drawers and closet!

Yuck. Underwear needs to be changed out everyday.
This is contrary to my dad's teaching.
When questioned about how often to change clothes, he said"
"Throw your clothes against the wall. If they stick, you need to change."

I happen to catch a heated debate on another travel board about doing laundry. Don't think I have ever seen this one on our forums. Probably one of those differences between TS and Hotel travelers. Kinda like cooking on vacation.

I always do laundry on vacation. If I have a 7 night stay, I usually pack for 4 days and do laundry in between. Easier if in-room washer/dryer but will still go find the community one if needed.

Also on that thread, someone said they will do laundry, but refuse to wash any undergarments as you never know what is lurking in washers that are community used. Never thought about that and will probably keep it out of my mind purposely on our next trip.

Curious, are there any timeshares that won't do laundry?
We even do laundry on a cruise if over 7 days. Did laundry while going thru the Panama Canal on a 15 day cruise.

This talk about changing underwear daily shows how privileged we are in this country.

I wonder how often the troops serving in the trenches during WW1 changed underwear. I doubt that had a ceasefire at 7 AM to change.

My wife won't let me pack a French maid on vacation. I've even offered to buy the outfit and then find someone who fills it nicely. That also was a non-starter. I've offered to compromise and select a Japanese Meido. You can throw a yen in Tokyo and hit a maid cafe these days. They're everywhere. Again, and inexplicably, that request was also denied. Meido cafes have reached Taiwan. Again, the answer was a rather curt "no." (Even though I offered to take her on the Hello Kitty plane from Los Angeles.)

So, lacking a maid, I do my own laundry. I wash clothes by hand. If that was good enough for my grandmother, it's good enough for me, too. I often wear the clothes which need cleaning straight into the shower with me and wash them at the same time I bathe.

I make things easy on myself by purchasing quick-drying, travel-friendly clothing. My other strategy is that I will bring clothing which is at the end of its useful life. And then I throw the clothes away after wearing them a few times. My favorite kind of trip is where I return home in the single travel outfit, everything else has been tossed away, and I unpack my goodies from the trip. Done. Back to work.

Since our trips are usually 2 to 4 weeks long, I always end up doing laundry. A lot of our trips are to beach locations, so I use the washer daily to wash out our swimsuits. We also take lightweight pieces that dry quickly, especially on cruises.

For timeshare vacations, I always pack my travel size clothesline and do laundry mid week or a day prior to checking out. A lot of my clothes are drip dry and I hang the clothesline over the bathtub so they can dry overnight. It's nice to not have so many dirty clothes when I arrive home. As for hotel stays, they are usually five days or less, so I do not do laundry and take a large suitcase with enough clothes for the duration of the stay.

Just back from 3+ weeks in Europe with carryon and personal item only.
5 nights Sarlat-la-Caneda FR VRBO: washer only so hung clothes outside to dry in over 100-degree heat.
2 nights Paris VRBO: washer and dryer so did a load
7 nights Rhine River Cruise: hand-washed dainties, socks and select shirts/pants for both DH and me. Hung in shower to dry which involved some maneuverings since clothes took a couple of days to dry and the shower needed to be used to shower.
2 nights Luzern hotel: no washing
4 nights Wengen airbnb CH: washer and dryer, YAY!
1 night ZRH hotel: no washing. Remaining dirty clothes packed into plastic bag for washing at home. Ended up washing everything anyway.

Always tricky figuring how to use foreign appliances. The biggest surprise was the dryer in Switzerland that collected water from the freshly washed clothes. There was a compartment that had to be emptied after each use. Luckily the owner left instructions in English, German and French. Unluckily no such instructions were provided for the dishwasher, which we got to run a couple of times but mostly resorted to hand-washing our plates/silverware for our group of 10!

If we stay at a timeshare that doesn’t have in room laundry, will likely bring dirty clothes home to wash. I’ve discovered laundry sheets. Really work well. Instead of liquid or powder detergent. Have any of you used them?
