I’m Canadian, and just won 1000 Bonvoy points, I have to fill out an IRS form, W-8BEN, any idea what this means, will I get a tax demand ‍♀️
No. I think I means you’ll just get 850 points after withholding. :ROFLMAO:

To be honest I’m not sure why they would want this for points. I’ve filled the form out countless times to take advantage of the tax treaty which reduces tax withholding down to 15% on dividends and interest payments. Without the payor would be required to withhold 30%.

You aren't going to get any tax demand for $8 worth of Bonvoy points, I think it's just required bureaucracy.

We just received our towel today as well. At first, I was surprised at how thin it is, but then I realized that it is made that way to fit better in your bag when going to the beach. The colors are nice, and it is very soft. We can't wait to use it.

Apparently MVC is grossing up the amount won to cover any necessary taxes. This situation is covered in the contest rules. MVC will remit the necessary taxes to the IRS from the additional funds they throw in. You won't personally be taxed. I don't think Canada taxes sweepstakes winnings. I wonder if you need to answer a skill testing question?

Is MVC going to submit info to IRS for winners who are US residents?
I do beleive there is a 1099 requirement. I didn't fill one out though for our two 1000 Bonvoy point wins. They also claim they will provide a cash prize that is to cover the amount of taxes to be paid. So I think you would get a 1099 that also includes an amount remitted for taxes even though you never paid the money yourself.

It’s unlikely they would provide a 1099 unless winnings exceed $600. The rules include a valuation of the prizes (e.g., $140 for the 500 PlusPoint one).

Perhaps, but based on the rules;
For US residents only: The value of each prize will be included as income to each winner and reported on the winner’s W2 form.

If a winner is not a resident of the United States, Sponsor will gross up the prize value for any prize with a fair market value of US$600 or more in an amount to satisfy the 30% withholding requirement thewithholding amount will be submitted to the US taxing authority IRS (the United States tax agency) as required by law and winner will receive a U.S tax form 1042 from the Administrator reflecting the total value of the prize, including the gross up amount and the withholding amount submitted to the IRS will be noted separately. This gross up amount will not otherwise be included as part of any Prize.

If a winner is a resident of the United States, Sponsor will gross up the prize value for any prize with a fair market value in excess of US$5,000 or more in an amount to satisfy the 24% withholding 8 requirement (upon the Administrator’s receipt of the required signed form W9 from the winner). The withholding amount will be submitted to the US taxing authority IRS (the United States tax agency) as required by law and winner will receive a U.S tax form 1099 from the Administrator reflecting the total value of the prize, including the gross up amount and the withholding amount submitted to the IRS will be noted separately. This gross up amount will not otherwise be included as part of any Prize.

Each winner is solely responsible for all applicable national, federal, state, or other tax obligations related to receipt and use of the prize won and should seek guidance from the winner’s tax advisor.

The $600 threshold is just there as a limit on when they must submit a 1099, but if they are grossing up winnings and remitting taxds, then a 1099 would be required no matter what.

500 PlusPoint based on 68 cents for MF, is $340.
But that isn't how they are valuing them for the purpose of the prize and contest. They are valuing them at $140.

At least you won points. Still nothing but sweepstakes entries for me.

Haven’t seen the points yet, though I did get the email stating I had won and providing a link to begin the claim process, the email confirming I had won pending approval, and the email stating my win was approved for each time I won. First time was January 20.

I had to answer a skill testing question and fill the W-8BEN form. It's been a month ago, still no 500 points.

I played the game and it said I was a winner pending verification. When I hit the continue button it took me to a login screen but kept saying my email was invalid. I was never told what I won. I exited out and logged back in again via the sweepstakes email link and all it said was thanks for playing and come back tomorrow. I haven’t gotten any email saying that I won something. How long does it take for them to send me the winner email?

Was the email from vistana.com or another domain? Thanks.

So I found the email. It was sent Feb 8th at 10:08pm local time for me, and I didn’t see it until I just searched for that domain. And of course it says:

If you don't respond to the form and submit all required documentation within five (5) calendar days, you will forfeit your potential win. Don't let that happen!

No reminder emails.

No notice or link on the website when I subsequently logged in within those five eligible days. At that time I was wasting my time daily on this.

What’s really irritating about this is that they know exactly who we are and it’s their archaic IT system which prevents them from permanently linking our Marriott Bonvoy number with our Vistana account. Naturally we shouldn’t even have a redemption process and the points should just show up in our accounts. If we have to work at this, there’s a problem.

Needless to say, Marriott has unbelievably found yet another way to get me irritated at them. I’m currently in Hawaii and will be at two of our resorts and I’ll be sure to tell them know what I think of this.

Sorry that you had missed out. I think you should send an email back to them to explain that you were not looking for a 3rd party email.

The email which my husband received did not ask for Bonvoy number. It simply asked for the home address as a form of verification. I don't understand the logic behind it as well.

Yes, I'm going to send an email. I'm also going to point out that I have received numerous emails from vistana.com promoting the contest (one each week, if not more)...I'm sure you received those as well. I had every reason to assume the winning notification email info would originate from the same domain.

I suspect the issue here is the third party contest fulfillment vendor.
