You're Being Lied to About Electric Cars

Self driving is a side issue. A self driving ICE could be made as easily as a self driving EV.

Consider the following - could you put the same activation and communication system in a Tesla Optimus robot. The robot could then be transferred from car to car, EV or ICE, negating the need to repetitively putting in the control automation in each car.

Lag time is not a problem. It's actually a benefit, giving more time for analysis. Merely a parameter to be planned for.

As far as computers needing instant reaction times to avoid crashes, self driving software is <not> instantaneous, and the Delta V is controlled by physics, not computers.

Like I said, this is a side issue.
 
I doubt it. Seniors on a fixed income for the most part don't buy new ev's as much as they do cheap used cars. I bet many seniors would struggle with the software. The main demographic that buys ev's are white males under 50 earning over $100k.

You don’t have to learn to use the software - it’s no different than using Uber today - you use an app to choose a destination - or multiple destinations - you get into your car - put on your seatbelt - click “Start Self Driving” on the screen and that’s it. You can also use the native Grok integration and simply talk to the car and tell it where you want to go.

It’s faster than any human - and has 8-10 eyes that never get tired - never get distracted - never make human errors. That’s why FSD is already 7x safer than the average human driver.

My bad - I meant NOT instantaneous.

But there is a price for anything. You pay for FSD by constant tracking. Some of us don't like that. . .

You can also use the native Grok integration and simply talk to the car and tell it where you want to go.

It is different than using Uber. With FSD(Supervised) a user has to have a valid driver's license, pay attention, and be ready, willing, and able to take over.

Using Waymo or Zoox would be a better comparison to Uber.

I remember you telling us your Tesla hit a pothole. Were you using FSD or similar ?

I don't!

I know it not popular in this day and age, but I like my privacy. I don't exist for all the marketers in the world to track me down to sell at me.

The two things I like on my phone are the Spotify app and gps. Screen size kind of matters with the GPS.

Having not used FSD, how is speed controlled? How do I do 10% over when I'm out in the middle of BFE (Eastern Oregon)? How does it react to the cautionary speed signs? Like the 35mph rec through the twisties that can usually be done at 50+ ?

There are 5 “speed” settings you can choose from with FSD that range from sloth to Mad Max.

FSD picks up on the cautionary speed signs & slows down. Recognizes temporary lower speeds in construction areas.

Yes. 90% of the time I use the Tesla mobile app to choose our routes and destinations while sitting at home before getting into the vehicle, set the HVAC in advance, and when we are ready then we literally just get into the car, put on the seatbelt, enter the PIN code (optional), and hit the “Start Self Driving” button on the screen. FSD then exits our garage and driveway and on out from there.

The only current issue we have is that FSD doesn’t always back into our garage itself when coming back home (though it always pulls into our driveway and parks), it does it about 50% of the time, and when it does, it doesn’t always pull all of the way into the garage space as it is a tight fit and it’s being overly cautious. That will change this fall when route preferences and parking preferences are added.

I don’t think many people realize that FSD is providing door to door drives the majority of the time. There are people posting videos online that literally haven’t had a disengagement in over 20k miles now, and have used FSD for 100% of those miles (you can see it plainly on their screen since FSD tracks your streaks between disengagements).

FSD additional things I've noticed:

I live in an area w/a lot of toll roads. It recognizes when the toll both is open toll and the car can just drive through w/no speed reduction vs an old-fashioned toll booth where you have to stop with a gate.

In a very crowded urban area is has not picked up on No Right Turn on Red signs.

I also live in an area with lots of traffic circles. Navigates them beautifully.

I'm an absolutely terrible parker. Does a great job parallel parking and also parking in "regular" spots.

Recognizes bikes and golf carts on roads and gives them a wide berth when passing.

Another fun thing: We've had a lot of long power outages in my area this summer. I've looked in the Tesla app and it indicates when a Supercharging station is out of commission because of the lack of power. I also know people who slept in their Tesla during the power outage. Put the car into camp mode and had comfortable temps all night vs sleeping in a 85 degree home.

What are the 5 settings as they relate to normal driving?
 
Standard is the middle setting. Pretty much goes over the speed limit no more than 5 MPH.
Chill is just below that and stays at the speed limit.

They are not programmable.

Yes, if you intervene and cancel the self driving, when you resume, self driving goes back to whatever setting you previously were at.

While actively using self driving you can actively move the setting up or down. I do that all the time. There's a divided highway near my home that is a known speed trap. I often move the setting down so there's no way I am exceeding speed limit in that area.

Tap of the brake or manually cause steering wheel movement. there is also a scroll wheel on the steer wheel you can depress.
 
Given the above, does anyone know if the "7x safer" or actual accident numbers have speed setting granularity?

Robotaxi works exactly the way I've described (including using an Unsupervised version of FSD v15). To your point about FSD(S) not behaving the same way - I was referring to the mobile app experience - choosing destinations - mapping out trips - etc. I outlined in another reply how I typically use the mobile app already. It really is very similar to Uber from that perspective. In so far as driving, of course it's different given it's Supervised vs Unsupervised. However, if you use the mobile app to plan your trips beforehand, it's actually as simple as I stated though. We are at 95.4% FSD miles in our 2026 MY since 14.2 was released when this data recording started.
