If you buy resale, there will likely be little depreciation, at least at WKORV, where I own. My daughter bought an OV unit there a few years ago for about $13k, and they are now selling for around $19K+. She would actually make a healthy 50% profit if she decided to sell it today. I never thought I'd see the day where a timeshare purchase turned out to be a good financial investment!

As with most things, timing is everything. When I bought WKV, WKORV was selling for $32+ on the resale market.

Personally, I don’t consider any purchase at WKORV to be a “good financial investment” due to the high MFs. Of course, YMMV.

How do the EOY units work with Home Resort reservations? For example, if you have a EOY Odd, does that mean on 1/1/2023 at midnight ET (start of day) your window 'opens' and you can reserve a week starting 1/1/2023 up until a week starting 1/1/2024, and you have until 12/31/2023 to reserve your week (or lose it), with with a checkin starting at 12/31/2024? Or did I get the windows wrong?

If you go the StarOptions route, then at any point in the 2023 year, up until midnight on 12/31/2023, you can reserve 8 months (max) out at any of the 22 other resorts. e.g., on 12/31/2023 at 11:59pm ET you can 'spend' your points to reserve in Cabo for a checkin on 8/31/24?

Staroption reservations must be used in the same year as the use year. For example, you may reserve January eight months prior during the previous year.

Home resort reservations are similar, in that they must be used during their use year and you may reserve it up to a year prior. Note that some weeks are considered event weeks and unavailable to most owners.

EOY Odd 2023 would be

for Home Resort is open midnight ET Jan 1 2022 for Jan 1 2023 arrival, and is open to midnight ET May 1 2023 for Dec 31 2023 arrival. basically, it's 12 months to 8 months in advance of your 2023 Fri/Sat/Sun arrival date. as you can see, the Home Resort period for 2023 usage is almost over. some resorts have event weeks at the end of the year, so your cutoff may really be a week or two earlier (so like pretty much right now) as you may not be able to reserve those last Dec 2023 weeks

for StarOptions is open midnight ET May 1 2022 for Jan 1 2023 arrival, and is open to midnight ET Dec 30(?) 2023 for Dec 31 2023 arrival. basically, it's no more than 8 months in advance of any arrival date in 2023. not exactly sure of the end of year dates, as it would depend on how many SOs/days you have left to use up

you have to use your week up with arrivals in 2023

Thanks, think I understand the Home Resort part.

So basically, for SOs, you can book something in advance (May 1 2023 for Jan 1 2024 arrival), but the SOs always have to be valid for usage in the year the stay STARTS. So 2023 SOs can get you checked in 12/31/23, but 2024 SOs need to be used to check you in on 1/1/24.

Anyone who doesn't want to use HomeResort for 2023 (deadline approaching anyway) and has not booked for 2023 can still book something using their SOs, but they are really "late" in doing so, unless they are targeting a December 2023 checkin. Meaning, the view might not be as great, etc.

If view, etc is super important and you are in this situation, the only other option is to 'bank' the SOs in July (for a fee) and then they can be used for checkin anytime in 2024 or 2025, but no longer for any checkin in 2023.

That correct?

Banked SOs follow the same rules as in my example (most important only bookable up to 8mos in advance) , only change is you moved the use year from 2023 to 2024.

Depending on your eliteness, you may be able to use them partly/fully into the year after (2025) as well, but that doesn't apply to everyone.

Other thing I forgot to mention is that Home Resort bookings are only in the season/unit type you own. If you own Island View, you cannot book Ocean View. If you own a 1BR you cannot book a studio. And the booking has to be a full week.

None of these restrictions apply to SO bookings. If you have enough points, you can book it.
