I am getting a little frustrated with TUG. People have an attitude. They do not want to clarify what they mean. Then what good is TUG? If people are just posting snide remarks and comments that no one can easily understand, How is this helpful?

lol

I posted something mildly funny, not snide.

If you don’t understand it, just let it go and move on rather than scolding me and telling me I’m ruining TUG with my attitude. Wait, weren’t you the one who was saying you wished you could express your opinions without judgement? I am genuinely laughing here. But you feel fine throwing out “snide” and an “attitude” when I say something? That is not *you* judging another TUGger? And honestly I don’t care. It’s just funny to me.

The point is: there’s some societies in which the norm is to do what’s best for the greater good. Like Dave’s friend discussed in Taiwan. I have a friend from Sweden, same thing talking to her about her country. The societies are different. People in Sweden (and apparently Taiwan) do what their government reccomends, so there only needs to be reccomendations, not laws, and people will try to abide by the spirit of the reccomendation.

America is not like that. Americans put a higher priority on their own rights and liberties than the good of society overall. It’s a different value system.

(Note that my saying it’s different means just that: different. It’s not a criticism.)

Hence my statement that we can’t have nice things. Like gyms.

My “nope” response was mostly that it wasn’t worth going to the place of writing all this out in a post and getting into another argument. Sometimes someone is doing nothing other than expressing their *opinion* in a gently humorous way. That’s all.

Now you are judging me. I just asked for clarification and you throw out "Nope." It felt really rude and dismissive. I was just pointing out how it felt. I was just expressing an opinion. I don't think it was rude and judgmental to say this in response to you dismissing my question.

This is what I said:

In what ways is this judgmental? It is true. I could not understand your comment and I was hoping you would clarify instead of dismissing me.

I think saying "Nope" is quite dismissive and has a judgmental tone to it. As though you are too superior to even address my question.

It is interesting to hear you could care less about me. Very nice.

I have expressed my opinions on TUG, which tend to be unpopular. But I do not recall ever dismissing someone like they were an ant or cockroach. This is how you comments make me feel. This is not the first time I have felt dismissed by you.

There are others who do the same thing. I try to stick to the topic and not get emotional but it is getting hard.

There are certain people on TUG who are very dismissive and do it in a way that feels like they think they are superior to others. This is an observation and not meant to be judgmental. But whenever one expresses an opinion, one can be accused of judging. When people do not agree with certain Tuggers, there is a mob mentality to it. I tend to be a nonconformist so my ideas and thoughts are not based on the majority or just because a so-called expert says so without data and good research behind it. For the timeshare content, I can probably just read as a guest. No need to pay.

My suggestion, use the ignore feature for those people. For the first time last week I used it. Differences of opinions are good but not the nastiness towards others to prove ones point.

I find it is the same people over and over again. I can count them on one hand. Ignoring them was the best remedy available.

Well I’m sorry you feel that way. I am genuinely in very good humor right now and I don’t understand your reaction to a mild comment that was meant to be amusing.

I must say I really didn’t follow everything. I skip over the back and forth stuff.

Sometimes a reaction is an accumulation of other peoples posts, not yours alone.

One of my amusing posts recently was misunderstood not to who it was written to but someone else and the response was really not necessary.

Emotions are high right now. I wish the few that have argumentative tones would stop but they obviously won’t thus I use the ignore feature. As you can tell by me responding to you, I have not used it on you.

You should have left it at "Nope."

Yes I agree about the high emotions. I figure when someone reacts strongly to something, it’s a sign of the times rather than some kind of flaw in the other person.

I have found a lot of the TUG conversations to be quite helpful. I have from very early on taken this COVID business very seriously and I have enough public health training to understand a lot of it. But it never really caused fear in me (well I guess it’s caused the healthy kind of fear like you’d demonstrate by moving off the train tracks when a train is bearing down on you- ie I’d rather not be hit by a train if that’s avoidable but I’m not “afraid” of trains). To me, the whole thing is more of a practical logistical concern- “ok this is happening, what is a sound response?” More of a call to action than being worried because it’s something out of my control.

I think what Ive learned from TUG is that different people have different concerns- for their own health, or for their kids education, or for their Mom living alone, or for their livelihood. It’s been hugely informative because I am busy with my own life and couldn’t appreciate all that.

So yes there are some people whose posts I just skim nowadays because I’ve got the gist of what they have to say. But I haven’t felt compelled to put anyone on Ignore. It’s valuable stuff, even the opinions that differ from mine.

I wish "they" had never created the oxymoron "social distancing." It is not sociable to distance oneself from others. Maybe they could have called it "survival distancing" or "virus distancing." Something else.

I’ve heard it being called “spatial distancing” too

and another thread dies because for whatever reason, folks seem to have lost the ability to be polite to each other.
