Whereas I understand the economy has to and has started opening in some states, including the one I live in, I have seen a lax in people following guidelines such as wearing a face mask and social distancing. In my area many were following the guidelines prior to opening phase 1 but now that we are in phase 1 many people I see are not following these guidelines. It seems they have a false sense of security because of phase 1.

I understand that opening things up can and will increase case numbers but with following guidelines, common sense tells me it can help a lot in not letting numbers spike excessively if we follow guidelines.

I personally feel I have a responsibility when I enter a store to wear a mask and to do my best to stay 6 feet from others, to keep myself and others safe. Imo I believe there could be a balance between the economy going again and being as safe as possible.

I just cannot understand how others when they are in stores go around as if everything is safe. What if they are asymptomatic? It is one thing to take risk on yourself but they are putting risk on others.

Is your Governor's mansion reopened for tours? If not, that should tell you something about how safe they think things are.

You can't control others. Wear your mask and try your best to keep yourself safe. As you said previously, people from adjacent states are coming to yours to shop. That's a false sense of security - this virus doesn't recognize state boundaries.

Stay safe, stay healthy. Survive.

As Dave has astutely and correctly noted above, the virus does not recognize state boundaries. Meanwhile, down in Georgia today you could (if so inclined) get yourself some new "ink" applied at a tattoo parlor and then go bowl a few frames at a bowling alley --- before next taking in a movie and going to a restaurant for dinner with (who knows how many and / or how many infected) others. All of these activities are fully sanctioned by the Governor of Georgia.

I'm very different than you. I feel that many of the guidelines are a moving target so I'm skeptical of them.

Masks, to me, have become kind of a virtue signal.
High moral standards have nothing to do with trying to practice safety until we know more.

If wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart is wrong, nothing will be gained by me doing both. It is just an inconvenience. On the other side, if it really helps, I did my part in containing the spread if I get infected.

Dave,

Funny, I used to love to shop, especially at thrift stores. Now, I have no desire. The other day when I went to my local grocery store, I was greeted at the door by a masked guy with a face shield, rubber gloves, jump suit telling me to wait at social distance. Once I entered, i was greeted with latex gloves, face mask, hand sanitizer and a sanitized cart. I used to enjoy looking around at the produce, meat, etc. I was reminded to keep moving by staff. I got my things that I could find, went to a self serve cashier thingy and made a quick exit.

Not enjoyable anymore. I felt like I was about to enjoy a root canal.

Now, I order on Amazon if I can and use delivery. Frankly, it sucks. Sometimes I wish I would just get the thing, fight it and then be immune to it.

Even thinking if that’s how I need to live, I will lose interest in travelling.

Sometimes I think the damage to contain this thing is worse than the risks.

But is the governor's mansion open for tours? Is the state building open?

And you hit the point on why many do not want to wear the masks into stores, reality hits you in the face. My other half hates seeing all the masks, yet he wears one too.

Today when I wore my mask into Home Depot I let the enjoyment still occur. I went to buy flowers and vegetable plants. Life must go on but I prefer to go overboard with safety until we know more.

The problem is human beings are social beings. We aren’t designed to be isolated. I can see some developing mental health challenges from this unless you are 1 in 100000 who is a hermit.

Thanks; I was too lazy to look up the verbatim quote before posting (but hope I captured the essence of Einstein's thought). :)

I completely understand. Everything has to be filtered through a sense of "the new normal." Until/unless things return to their status pre-pandemic, things are going to be weird.

For me, going into any store has become "Get your stuff and get out." There is no "shopping," it is only about "buying."

I recently booked a two-week timeshare vacation in Hawaii for next Spring, and my entire perspective was, "I wonder if I'll have to cancel this?"

I look forward to this being behind us. Hang in there. You are not alone. :)

Sadly, that’s not happening here. The local Home Depot here is the same. Wait, social distancing, masks on, latex gloves on and staff telling you to keep moving. Just get what you need and get out.

@Fredflintstone I absolutely understand your feelings on this. I get annoyed / irritated by people in the stores that are practically in full PPE. Conversely - I don't wear a mask, and I'm sure I annoy them. But I do my best to not get in their personal space b/c I'm not out to pick a fight / provoke people.

So much of this is personality driven.

My DH and I have been following the guidelines - staying home except to go out for essential services, wearing masks, washing hands, social distancing, etc. We do it because we are rule followers. I would like to see the economy open up again and as soon as possible. Life can’t go on like it is. The human suffering is immense already. Right now, there is no end in sight. Like @Fredflintstone I wish I would just get sick and get it over with. In fact, my DH may have already had it in February. I wish we could confirm.

Yesterday

talked to about 6 people on our walk.....from 40 to 50 ft away

stopped to watch some siblings riding their bikes over an obstacle course....again 50 to 70 ft away

Interacted with my 2 sons via instant messaging off and on all day.

watched church service on facebook live.

Wife had a zoom meeting with church group

zoom happy hour with 12 other people.

While I would love to have people over the house for that happy hour I am by no means isolated.

There is no M.D. after my name (and I don't play a doctor on TV --- yet), but there is no scientific evidence that recovery from a COVID-19 infection imparts future immunity. "Returning" patients are not at all uncommon and this is increasingly worrisome.

I pray that great minds in the scientific / medical community will succeed in developing a vaccine as soon as practicably possible.

Yes, I don’t wear a mask normally unless I’m handed one by the store. I too keep social distancing. I think I naturally read people through body language and a mask obscures how they feel. We all do this. Seeing a smile goes along way to make ones day and that’s covered.

To see how this has gone, I went to my local drugstore yesterday. As I was moving along, I noticed they removed the contraceptive section and attached a sign saying,

“Shoppers Drug Mart discourages any form of activity that violates Social Distancing and therefore this section is closed until further notice.”

Wow.

I can tell you this. I can’t wait to go to a packed restaurant with friends and enjoy a nice evening. Something I used to take for granted and never thought it could be taken away.

Knowing you had it before, even if you don’t have immunity, lets you know your immune system was able to handle it. That would make me feel better but I would still follow guidelines.

That sign is ridiculous and laughable. You are my kindred spirit in this.

I was all "gung ho" at the beginning of this to do my part . But as time goes on, I'm feeling less and less cooperative with all these rules.

I might just be one of those hermits. Maybe if I said to self repeatedly "I am isolated", I might start having problems. Otherwise, I live alone, like I did before all this.

I won't sign on to anything about how we were designed. We are each different with varying needs for social interaction. I don't seem to have needed people as much as others seem to. I've always been fairly self-contained. This just isn't that hard on me. I miss dance, but it's certainly not devastating. It's not that odd to be home most of the time, either.

If I had several others crammed in here with me, that would be a different story, where I would be craving isolation and privacy.

You know, it’s simple things I miss.

Like

A kind handshake.
A smile
Enjoying a meal with friends, in person. Zoom just doesn’t cut it.
Talking with a friend while walking and not worried about social distancing.
Watching kids play at the playground laughing and having a whale of a time. Here, the playgrounds are all taped up.
See someone have a laugh.

I kept my job part time because I enjoy the face to face. Now, I do Zoom and it’s not the same.

Agreed. I plan to host one helluva bash / cookout / party when that day finally becomes possible. Handshakes and hugs all around and plenty to eat and drink, together under a huge tent in the yard (...note implied hope that this becomes possible before winter).

Btw, you're invited --- if you promise not to wear the Fred Flintstone garb. :D
