Ran into the Director of Operations this afternoon and had a nice discussion with him re: the recent renovation and subsequent issues. They are a bit busy dealing with the issues, which include a number of installation issues with the new appliances (e.g., our nonfunctional microwave and ice maker, and numerous refrigerators installed in the Bay Vista units that are rusting on the front of the doors after just two months). That being said and with all sympathy for the management and staff having to deal with these issues, I am left with the feeling that there are serious communication issues here as well.
One item we learned of was that with the installation of the new ceiling fans in the VGV units, there is interference between the remote control units for the fans between the units. This results in the remote for one unit affecting the operation of the fans in the adjacent units. It does explain the issues I was having last night attempting to leave the fan on in the upstairs room in our 1 BR Townhouse unit while turning off the light - every time I did this, the light came back on within a minute. I ultimately gave up and turned off the power to the fan in order to get the light off and go to sleep. My understanding of what really happened here is now that I was either turning on or turning off the lights on the fans in the adjacent units and the occupants were reacting rationally and turning them off or on as appropriate to address the odd behavior of their lights randomly switching on or off. Had I not spoken with the Director of Operations, I would not have learned what the real problem is and might have continued this tonight and throughout the week. This issue could be alleviated to some extent by notifying guests of the problems in VGV when they check in - there doesn't seem to have been an effort to accomplish this by the management here, though. Not sure if there are similar issues in the other phases with the remotes. Bottom line is that it would be worth checking with the front desk on the status of the fan remote control interference on arrival to see if you will need to just turn off the fan/light at night.
There are still other outstanding issues. For example, there is a new safety and security manager and they just completed an audit of their fire and safety programs. As a result, they identified that many of the AEDs (automated external defibrillators) were inoperable, so they were removed and are being replaced. The new AEDs are not yet in place. We suggested to the Director of Operations that it might be helpful to post signs indicating that they are not in place and that in the event of an emergency, guests should immediately contact the manager on duty or take whatever action is appropriate. We're getting to an age when it's important for us to understand the emergency equipment like that available to us and what to do if anything happens; I ordered a set of grilling equipment to bring along on on trips because they didn't cost much and I can store them with a friend on island but an AED is too expensive for my tastes.
There's a GM meeting for owners scheduled for Tuesday morning. Hopefully we hear some unified message about what is going on. We will be providing feedback, hopefully constructive.
