Westin St John Master Thread - Part 3 [Dec. 2017 and forward]

I wonder if this will have any negative impact on WSJ and be another pilfer of staff that live in St Thomas and commute over. Yes it’s not Marriott but Hilton, but it’s more jobs to compete with St John.
I suppose in some sense. But according to the USVI Bureau of Economic Research the USVI has 3,435 Hotel rooms across all islands so a new 126 room hotel isn't going to have that big of an impact. And it's just a Hampton not even a Hilton so I'm guessing the wages and staffing levels will be subpar.

Has anyone else had an issue with confirming a FIxed/Fixed reservation recently? I confirmed my 2027 week 9 in August (I have the email) When I looked at my dashboard today my 2027 week was again in an Unconfirmed status. If I had not noticed I would have been SOL. This isn't the first time, I remember several other people having this issue in the last couple years. Now I have two emails with different confirmation numbers for that week. WTH, I'm sure MVC would love to rent out my unit for beaucoup $$$.

Really sucks after receiving the " Your MF will be increasing by 5.1%" letter last week.

Can you post the MF increase letter. We haven’t seen it.

Sorry didn't see this message until now. Have you received your letter? I can still post it if you want me to.

Does anyone have a contact email for the resort? The only email contact I have is for the concierge and it's a general resort question that I don't know they can answer. No rush in getting an answer, so I don't want to call. I have an email for the GM...But not exactly a pressing question for the GM either. :ponder:

No I have not received anything from WSJ.

We got our letter about three weeks ago. The increases are ugly, but better than Harborside.
What is the increase for Sunset Bay? They haven’t sent anything out yet. They have to be careful with continued ugly increases. It’ll just explode delinquency and push owners out and lead to a financial collapse.

Still have not seen WSJ-Sunset Bay 2026 fees post yet. Does anyone in the know have any indication what % increases we are looking at coming?

Sunset is 6.4% increase from 2025

Bay Vista posted today and a EOY 2BR is $1,934.90.

Just got in for a Christmas stay in VGV. Remodeled units are nice, but there's a major miss if you install a microwave oven that doesn't work. A few other glitches that we'll be heading down to visit with management to discuss. Good thing that our primary reason for coming here is the location rather than the accommodations! It sure would be nice if these high MFs bought something.

For those of you w/the Chase Sapphire Reserve, I am happy to report that MFs on Bay Vista trigger the 4x hotel bonus even though the charge bills as "BAY VISTA CONDO FEE".

I had read that paying MFs at other Westin VCs did so but feared given the description that MFs at the WSJ BV wouldn't. Of course, deciding whether or not 4 Chase UR points are worth more or less than 6 Bonvoy points is up to you.

Was in my Bay Vista week 49. New Couch was not that comfortable and for some reason is not flush to the wall due to the pull out sofa. I do not know why the cushions could not have been wider. New carpet in BR as well as area in LR. They did replace the pebble floor in the shower with tile. Noticed that it looks a bit muddy and first thought it was sand that was left there, but it is just the pattern in tile. My wife insists that they do not consult with women when designing these changes. Still love my Bay Vista unit.

Got a brand new microwave yesterday, so they have worked through our punch list of issues. You'd think the management team would have someone with a checklist to be sure everything is working.

Ran into the Director of Operations this afternoon and had a nice discussion with him re: the recent renovation and subsequent issues. They are a bit busy dealing with the issues, which include a number of installation issues with the new appliances (e.g., our nonfunctional microwave and ice maker, and numerous refrigerators installed in the Bay Vista units that are rusting on the front of the doors after just two months). That being said and with all sympathy for the management and staff having to deal with these issues, I am left with the feeling that there are serious communication issues here as well.

One item we learned of was that with the installation of the new ceiling fans in the VGV units, there is interference between the remote control units for the fans between the units. This results in the remote for one unit affecting the operation of the fans in the adjacent units. It does explain the issues I was having last night attempting to leave the fan on in the upstairs room in our 1 BR Townhouse unit while turning off the light - every time I did this, the light came back on within a minute. I ultimately gave up and turned off the power to the fan in order to get the light off and go to sleep. My understanding of what really happened here is now that I was either turning on or turning off the lights on the fans in the adjacent units and the occupants were reacting rationally and turning them off or on as appropriate to address the odd behavior of their lights randomly switching on or off. Had I not spoken with the Director of Operations, I would not have learned what the real problem is and might have continued this tonight and throughout the week. This issue could be alleviated to some extent by notifying guests of the problems in VGV when they check in - there doesn't seem to have been an effort to accomplish this by the management here, though. Not sure if there are similar issues in the other phases with the remotes. Bottom line is that it would be worth checking with the front desk on the status of the fan remote control interference on arrival to see if you will need to just turn off the fan/light at night.

There are still other outstanding issues. For example, there is a new safety and security manager and they just completed an audit of their fire and safety programs. As a result, they identified that many of the AEDs (automated external defibrillators) were inoperable, so they were removed and are being replaced. The new AEDs are not yet in place. We suggested to the Director of Operations that it might be helpful to post signs indicating that they are not in place and that in the event of an emergency, guests should immediately contact the manager on duty or take whatever action is appropriate. We're getting to an age when it's important for us to understand the emergency equipment like that available to us and what to do if anything happens; I ordered a set of grilling equipment to bring along on on trips because they didn't cost much and I can store them with a friend on island but an AED is too expensive for my tastes.

There's a GM meeting for owners scheduled for Tuesday morning. Hopefully we hear some unified message about what is going on. We will be providing feedback, hopefully constructive.
