I first heard the Leo Kottke rendition of this when I was in college. I was immediately captivated by the haunting lyrics and melody. Definitely a sad song, but the mental picture it created resounded within me. Later, Bonnie Raitt did a popular cover. But she left out a verse, so it felt incomplete. Finally, I put in one of Paul Seibel's recordings.

But after it all, I'm still most captivated by Kottke's sparse rendition, with a 12-string guitar and no accompaniment. To me, that arrangement just fits the song so well.
