Resale purchases don't count towards HGV Max tiers?!?!

We're looking to move up in HGV Max tier status via resale. To do so we're looking to purchase @ Craigendarroch, but they advised resales would only help with status, but won't count towards elevating tier status with HGV Max. Can anyone confirm this?

Craig lodges will not increase Max Tiers levels, only Legacy Elite levels.

The points from them are usable in Max though

We had conflicting info and weren't sure. Thank you for the clarification, we appreciate it.

And, for Legacy Elite, it has to be purchased through the official Craig resale office.

Actually do you know of any properties that would count towards Max tiers?
No resale will count toward Max Tiers. A few did and some still do for Elite levels but they closed that loophole for Max.

Ahh, of course they did -- We're always late on these things. Do you mind me asking if you're Legacy Elite or Max? If the latter, do you think it's worth moving up from Preferred+ to Premier?

We are Legacy Elite Premier so get basically the same benefits as the Max Premier + and Centum, with a couple exceptions. We don't get the OS credits but, instead get a 30% discount.

You will have to compare the benefits between the two, in order, to decide if that cost is worth it to you. For us, since we got Elite Premier via the resale market, no retail purchase is worth getting but, .....I am cheap...:)

Since we're Max retail does that mean we're SOL from Legacy tiers?! More specifically if we were to buy resale direct from Craigen, would that count towards Legacy or we're just straight Max across the board?!

Unfortunately, SOL...

That is why so many Legacy owners are, kind of, stuck. They can only buy resale to stay in Legacy. If they trade in or buy retail, then they will be put in Max where only retail purchases will count toward tiers.

Now, you can sell your retail and then buy a resale to become legacy... Then get Elite Premier. You can probably do that cheaper then raising your Max tier via retail. Legacy owners are those that were in HGVC before Max was created and haven't bought retail since or recent resale only owners.

For me, Max will be a downgrade. So I am not really stuck because I want no part of it. (saves me $$$$ too)

Also not stuck as we have neither Elite nor Max, and want neither.

Cheers.

but, you are stuck....if you buy retail, you will be in Max also....so "stuck" can be intentional. We are "intentionally" stuck in Legacy because we really like and use the Elite Premier perks but would be too cheap to pay the retail prices to get the equivalent perks in Max.

I am surprised that you don't want Elite, since it comes with so many perks...not being willing to get it, is different than wanting it. I want a Bugatti....but will never buy one.

With EP, you pay no fees to reserve, convert to HH, or save, can get upgrades, 30% discount OS, $200 Lyft credit, more properties, longer booking windows in other properties, etc. Why someone wouldn't want that surprises me. However, not needing the points to get it, is a different point. I would not buy the weeks/points just to get it, but if I want them anyway....they may as well be elite qualifying and get me those perks.

however, I could never afford one but I tell myself it is my choice that I am not buying it....:)

We appreciate all the info and clarity. Since it appears we can only add points I'll just have fun shopping for cheap deeds with bookoo points then. Thank you again! :)shaka

that you can do. Buy resale points and use them across HGVC and in the Max exchange.

"If you buy retail" is the operative phrase that will not apply to us. Just not something we're going to do.

And you're right, I misspoke. I'd be happy to take Elite for nothing, so I "want" it in that sense. Just not willing to pay for it based on what it would realistically cost.

With AI, I don't pay reservation fees. Would be nice to not pay the other fees, but not worth the cost. We book what we want, so the upgrades, while nice, are not needed. We don't do OS. Lyft credit wouldn't be bad, but I already get $15/month in Uber credit and $10/month for Lyft and don't use all of that, so it would likely go to waste.

We likely will buy more points. Resale, of course. And we will be looking at Craig because of DeX. And I think that still contributes to EP. However, we don't need enough points to amount to much in EP, I think (don't know the levels, but this feels right). And, as you say, not willing to buy more than we need to get EP.

So, yeah, it's not willing to pay what it takes to get it rather than now wanting it if it were offered for much, much less.

And Bugatti would not be my car of interest. Not really sure what is, but I'm sure there's something like that I could want if money were no object.

Cheers.

yes, AI cuts part of the benefit and like you said, if you don't need/want the points, then it doesn't make sense. We use the points and benefits so it is nice and the perks offset the cost of the craig resale purchase. We make quite a few reservations each year so those are free and then don't worry about whether we need to save until the last minute since that is free. We don't convert to HH though so don't use that benefit. We do use the Lyft credit when flying to a property. They are still EP qualifying, for now, but only if you buy directly from them.

We use the subway for NYC and rent a car for Hawai'i. And that's pretty much where we use our HGVC. The occasional Vegas, and we do Lyft/Uber there. But that's once a year, if that. Vast majority of our stays are Hyatt, with a couple of DVC trips thrown in.

Cheers.

You can also use them for non-Hilton stays. The system doesn't know where you are staying, just that it is a request for a node to node trip within buffers of the airport and the property so, if the Hyatt is near the HGV, you can use it and get close...some use it to go from the airport to the HGV and then take a car from the HGV to where they want to go, so the bulk of the cost is covered via the credit.

Have you determined how much status is worth? I haven't dug deep but it seems like it is worth a small fraction what it costs you to buy direct.

Hi. Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean resale points are a small fraction of retail?

I think that the point being made is that the elite stats benefits may only be worth a small fraction of what it would cost to achieve the status by buying direct. I know that's the case for us, but we each have to make our own determination.

Cheers.

It would depend on your use.

For example, if you have Elite Premier, and make 10 reservations per year, then you are saving $790 based on online reservations. If you save any points that year, you save another $120 or more depending on when you save. If you use the Lyft credit, it is another $250 savings. If you use OS, it is a 30% discount so variable.

We do, at least, 10 reservations per year and use the Lyft credit for sure...so that is, at least, a $1,040 savings every year for us. We rarely save but knowing that it is free, definitely changes the way that you use the system because you don't worry about using all of your points each year. We don't really use OS or the luxury homes but have gotten many upgrades...not sure what dollar value to put on the upgrades since it is hit or miss. We don't convert to HH so don't realize that savings either. However, each of our Craig weeks cost us about $2k so every two years covers the cost of a week. Or, the savings more than covers the cost of MFs for a week, which was about $800/week this year for us....so a week + is free each year.

You could really maximize the use and have many more savings though. The Diamond HH perks have saved us a lot when traveling in Europe because we get free breakfast and happy hour..and the happy hour is often full meals so that is dinner...plus upgraded rooms. We also get Diamond through the Aspire card though.

For the Max Tiers, you would just need to do similar math based on the cost of the retail week and the perks that you would use. It is hard to make up for the cost of a retail week though.
