Quarantine and Your Pets

Her coat is totally Newfie. Even our groomer said so. She shows Bernese Mountain Dogs and felt that her coat was very similar. No, her feet are not webbed but I have never seen fur grow like hers - especially around her feet. It's hilarious. She is kind of double coated, but not like a Lab. It's much lighter in texture. She's totally black, but when her fur gets long, it gets a brownish tinge. Not sure what that's about, but that's why she needed a trim. And as much as I like our groomer (and when she grooms Kaya she looks like a show dog) it is an all day affair. She's a one man show so she brings in 4 or 5 dogs each day and does the grooming assembly line style, and they are crated when it's not their turn. I think that it stresses Kaya out although she seems to be resigned to her fate. Once we are through this, I may have the groomer shave her belly for the summer, but then I will just clean her up throughout the year. Btw, Kaya is with your pups in spirit. Sound asleep.

You've got this well sorted out. And it might well be she's just a smaller Newfoundland, (granted, a third smaller than the Breed Standard), which may account for why she was surrendered. Maybe people expected more of her than her breeding and genetics could deliver. Runts happen, I'd suppose, even in large dogs. :D

My dogs love those cuddle beds, and they switch out who sleeps in which one. Sometimes they both sleep in the same bed at the same time. Strange dogs. They can be sound asleep, but if I get up off the couch and ask if they want to go outside - they're at the door in a flash. We have a large, well-fenced back yard, and they love to run around. But when I come back indoors, so do they. I think they forgot they're supposed to be Dachshunds... ;)

Along this line, your post made me recall what is absolutely the best illustration of the love between dogs and mankind...

Warning: If you have NOT seen this before, you will need kleenex.
That was a very powerful video. Thanks for sharing. Man best friend forever.

Our cat Kai practicing social distancing from Cody. He's a giver that way, sometimes enforced with claws, the little brat. Note the "What the heck did I do?" expression on Cody's face. Kai is playing gatekeeper, and won't let him in, obviously. :)

I arrived downstairs to my office late today, so thought I could sneak in and post stuff on eBay without help. I got caught. He'll probably want some of the strawberry rollini being delivered a little later too! Lots of room behind the computer, but JB always slides forward as I work.

When we want to work on our computer the Cats want to help work the Key Board. So they get locked out of the Office. Same thing happens to Patti when she is trying to type long emails to her Sister on her Tablet at the Breakfast Room Table. So the Cats tend to get exiled to the basement (litter box and cat food in basement).

Our Aussie needs a HAIRCUT!

Just based upon how she eats food, I am 100% sure that there is no Lab in there. She doesn't care about food. At all. Clearly not a Lab. There's no retriever in there either, lol. Our best guess is part Newfoundland (but she's only 65 lbs) and maybe Border Collie? We just don't know. She's a herder but she's ridiculously low energy. Like blob energy. The only time she moves faster than a walk is when she is chasing other dogs at the dog park, and even then it's 5 or 6 running steps before she drops down to a little trot. And the other dogs run in a circle; she just runs diagonally to meet them on the other side of the park.

We brought her home in 2017 after dealing with a year of cancer treatments and my husband's heart attack. We had to have a dog that would fit into our life without causing a lot of stress. I honestly believe that she was sent to us intentionally. My husband was not raised with dogs and has tolerated the five dogs that we have owned over our marriage, three Labs and two mixes, but Kaya is truly *his* dog. It's a beautiful thing to see.
She looks like a large part Golden Retriever to me, and it sounds like she has their sweet temperament too.

I'm looking for the groomers who drive their van to my driveway and trim my dog. He's a MESS!

Oh man. Definitely not a lab. Our yellow lab (Molly) doesn't have an 'off' switch. She LIVES for kibble time. She hoovers up her meal in 15 seconds, then closely supervises Lily (our golden retriever) while she finishes her meal at a slower pace!

My neighbor, when commenting on our last Lab, Buddy, noted "he doesn't savor his food, does he?".

@bbodb1 wow that was powerful. Reminds me of the book “Hachiko Waits”

I just looked that book up, @Cornell - wow, that looks powerful. I will have to check that out. Thanks for the heads up.

We don’t have pets at home. DD has a doodle 3 years old. We FaceTime with her several times a day & Riley is always a participant. She uses her IPad & we use IPhones. The iPad is large enough that Rily can see us & react to us. She actually gives us kisses & pays attention to whoever is on the screen. Riley has not seen us since beginning of March and that is the longest stretch of time she has endured.
We miss DD & Riley

I was sobbing at the end. And I went to Tokyo, I made a trip to the train station that has a statue of Hachiko. Lots of couples take engagement pictures at this statue as it represents loyalty & devotion.

Btw, Miss Kaya was an owner relinquishment to a local Lab rescue. We later discovered that we are at least her third owner and she was about 6 when we adopted her, which makes me sad for her but happy for our family because we will be her last family. She doesn't bark, chew, is 100% reliable in the house, walks calmly on a leash, gets along with everyone at the dog park, gets along fine with the cat, stays off of the furniture. She used to *not* beg at the table, but my husband has cured her of that. :D She is truly a delight to have in our lives, and as a rescue, she is proof that not all rescues come with baggage. I still can't believe how lucky we are to have found her.

What a lucky pup to have found a great forever home finally!

I always groom my own dogs because I can't really imagine paying someone to do it. Its easier than people think....

Your girls look great! Olive has had a puppy cut for most of her 10 years. But her eyes were often red, runny and gooey. Our vet thought the hair around her eyes, having been cut, became prickly as it grew out between cuts ( once a month) and might be the cause. So we let the top and mustache grow out and put the top up. Her body was still puppy cut and her ears and chin shorter than in that photo taken a few days ago of her without been groomed for two months. On a more recent visit to the vet she tested her eyes and found them dry. She's on RX eye drops twice a day now and they've made a big difference. Now I wonder if the hair around the eyes having been cut was ever the problem but I do kind of like the pony tail and bow and will keep it for now. I really appreciate the information and will save it should we decide to do it ourselves. The bathing once a week is hard enough as she's a little feisty with me. Not sure I'm up for it but necessity may one day rule! We may take her back to the groomer soon. The groomer is now not letting anyone in the shop. She will crack the shop's front door and do the hand off quickly. Payment handled over the phone.

We did our first pandemic grooming last night and Miss Kaya doesn't look too bad. She doesn't look too good either, but she looks a million times better than she did. She's quite the shaggy dog sometimes. I bought a grooming kit from Amazon about a month ago and the right tools definitely help with the job. My daughter did most of the shaping and I focused on Kaya's troll feet (fur coming our between her pads, and the shaggy fur around her toes and hocks). We won't be quitting our day jobs, but we did a pretty good job in a pinch. We bought this set: https://www.amazon.com/Gimars-Stainless-Grooming-Scissors-Titanium/dp/B07XF3TH73/ref=sr_1_6?crid=NYGYZ1EHYSV1&dchild=1&keywords=grooming+scissors+for+dogs&qid=1588094758&sprefix=grooming,aps,231&sr=8-6View attachment 19784
She looks good to me! I'm glad you had a mother daughter time of it too!

That is quite an expression on Cody's face and I love Kai's markings!
