Quarantine and Your Pets

Wondering how your pets are doing with everyone home all day? My two dogs, Cody and Kona, love having me here all day. I have them on a very solid schedule, with predictable times for eating, walks, play time, even treat time. They get a chew treat each evening at 8:30 before they go to bed. They're pretty much on a schedule, and they seem to be thriving. They're a great addition to my daily peace of mind.

Today being Easter, we had a fancy dinner. And unsure with what to do with a leftover corn on the cob, I decided to make (ahem) Corn, er... Dogs.

They loved it, and had eaten things down to the "bone" in a very short time. These guys are like little piranhas, I swear!

I have three little dogs and a cat. They are our kids. They keep us sane. They are very happy we are home 24/7.

Mine doesn't have to go in his crate when I leave the house, because I'm not off to work anymore. Now he usually comes with me on my minimal trips to the store, pumping my tires yesterday, etc. He has been a good companion when I go stir crazy.

Mine are fine and on pretty much the same schedule they've always been on. One keeps looking at me strange in the middle of the day, like she can't figure out why I'm always home now. I have 4 and they are usually on my lap.

It just occurred to me how perfectly appropriate it was for me to feed my doggies corn like this, resulting in the lame "Corn Dog" joke: I mean, they ARE wiener dogs, after all... LOL!

Love your dogs Dave. We had a full sized tri-colored Aussie in the past. Best dog we ever had but they need to stay busy! I can see why they are thriving while you are at home.

I've shared these pictures before, but for anybody interested, my dogs are Longhaired Miniature Dachshunds. They are full brothers, born to the same parents in separate litters, 18 months apart. Cody is the dappled one, and is the older one. He is now six and a half. Kona is the black one, and is younger. He's just turned five. They're great companions to me, and best friends to each other. Kona is nearly blind, so Cody acts as his seeing eye dog. It's amazing to watch how they take care of each other.

I can totally see that. But when you compare them to the size of my foot, you can see they're pretty short little guys. Although they're not the tiny Dachshunds you see people carrying around. These guys are around 15 pounds, more or less. Carrying both at the same time is quite a workout. LOL!

Please don't give your dog corn cobs unless you closely supervise them or feed them from hand like it appears you were doing. Several years ago, our sweet bichon got into the garbage and proceeded to eat some amount of corn cobs he found there. A few days later, he ended up at the vets office for emergency surgery after becoming very sick because of an intestinal blockade caused because the chunks of cob couldn't be passed through or digested. The vet said it was something they saw frequently during fresh corn season.

Yes. I held the cob as shown in the picture, and took it away when I felt they'd had enough. I wouldn't ever let them eat the actual cob. Cody wanted to take the cob and run away with it, the little thief, but I'm usually one step ahead of him.

Sorry about your Bichon. Hope he's okay now.

Phoenix and Ash are loving hanging out and chilling with mom on the sofa much more these days. They are getting mid week walks that they normally wouldn't get. This weekend was supposed to be the final Hunt Test of the year, and we were going to be working the dogs on jackrabbit up in Utah. So in honor of them I took them rabbiting on Friday, it was cold and rainy so the rattlesnake risk was relatively low. The organizer of the Hunt Test is a basset hound person and she posted some videos of her bassets rabbitting over the weekend. I let the dachshund girls watch that. They were mildly interested in watching the bassets work but when they got on the trail of a rabbit and started baying, my girls got very very excited. They knew what that meant. Tally ho!

I was thinking I need to do something about Baby Ash's mutton chops. And there's really no excuse since I'm around the house a lot more....

I know, right? I even bought a grooming table and clippers so I could teach myself to do Kona. His blindness causes him to have seizures when he's away from his comfort zone, which is the house and yard. Riding in the car, walking on a leash, or trips to the groomer are hugely stressful for him. Even going to the Vet for shots is traumatic. Poor guy. I gave the both of them a bath and modest clip a few weeks ago, but you wouldn't know it now.

We adopted a lab mix puppy from Humane society the weekend after Christmas. We lost our old lab in 2018 so it was time. He's now spoiled rotten not having to crate up when we leave in the am-as we are all home and have been for a month. OTOH-it's been fun having a puppy again-so much energy and so funny. Both kids who are still at home (teens) have each had a hard day or two where they've had some bad days and I've relaxed the "no dogs on the bed" rule for them.
