Our neighbors have kept 3 Hens since we moved in 10 years ago. The newest ones had grown enough to be released in the backyard yesterday. Felix was use to the grown hens. He is trying to figure these new little guys through the fence.

Biology project chicken who thinks she’s a house pet- someone left gate at bottom of deck stairs (to keep the chickens out) open...well she knows the way up the stairs, across deck and through screen (one of those “As seen on tv magnetic screen doorways) to check if there’s food in dog bowl...I turn around from cleaning kitchen after dinner and there’s a chicken!

Interesting article about who cares for pets when their owners fall ill. Do you have a plan for your pets?

——————

When Pet Owners Fall Ill With Coronavirus, What Happens Next?
Spain, which is enduring one of the world’s biggest and deadliest outbreaks, grapples with moral and practical questions on caring for animals when their owners are suddenly sick.

MADRID — The coronavirus strikes. The patient — at home, sometimes alone — becomes desperately ill. The ambulance finally arrives to take the person away.

Then, a second team, clad in hazmat gear, follows to rescue a household member abandoned in the chaos and suddenly in need of a new caregiver: the patient’s pet.

The teams, from the Madrid animal shelter El Refugio, end up placing the pets in foster homes with people who will care for them temporarily while Spain’s strict lockdown is in place and so much is in flux.

Thousands of animals in Spain have been left behind amid one of the world’s largest and deadliest coronavirus outbreaks — something that has been mirrored around the world, from Wuhan, China, where the pandemic originated, to Israel and India. At the same time, the demand to adopt dogs and cats has surged during the lockdown.............

My labs love to finish off corn on the cob and they look so funny doing it with their little teethies........

Along this line, your post made me recall what is absolutely the best illustration of the love between dogs and mankind...

My daughter always loved our dog but didn’t spend a ton of time with him. When she was in Switzerland this last year on her exchange she missed him so much . The one thing she was most homesick for was dogs in general . She got back to the US

early bc of this whole COVID thing and has been home pretty much 24/7. With that , she has spent so much time loving our little guy. Their relationship has completely blossomed. He loves having her home.

Oh my gosh, we need a crying emoji. (In real life, they would have traced the owner via the chip, and that lady would have adopted him).

smart pup! We have leash hanging on outside of closet door by the front door. Our lab goes and nudges the leash when he needs to go out (if back door to deck isn't open). It's sometimes frightening how smart these dogs are!! Mallory is beautiful!

Miss Olive's life hasn't changed. She moves from one couch back to another. One to watch what's going on outside and the other to watch what's happening in the kitchen! She badly needs to go to the groomer though I bathe her once a week.

We did our first pandemic grooming last night and Miss Kaya doesn't look too bad. She doesn't look too good either, but she looks a million times better than she did. She's quite the shaggy dog sometimes. I bought a grooming kit from Amazon about a month ago and the right tools definitely help with the job. My daughter did most of the shaping and I focused on Kaya's troll feet (fur coming our between her pads, and the shaggy fur around her toes and hocks). We won't be quitting our day jobs, but we did a pretty good job in a pinch. We bought this set: https://www.amazon.com/Gimars-Stainless-Grooming-Scissors-Titanium/dp/B07XF3TH73/ref=sr_1_6?crid=NYGYZ1EHYSV1&dchild=1&keywords=grooming+scissors+for+dogs&qid=1588094758&sprefix=grooming,aps,231&sr=8-620200428_102749.jpg

Btw, Miss Kaya was an owner relinquishment to a local Lab rescue. We later discovered that we are at least her third owner and she was about 6 when we adopted her, which makes me sad for her but happy for our family because we will be her last family. She doesn't bark, chew, is 100% reliable in the house, walks calmly on a leash, gets along with everyone at the dog park, gets along fine with the cat, stays off of the furniture. She used to *not* beg at the table, but my husband has cured her of that. :D She is truly a delight to have in our lives, and as a rescue, she is proof that not all rescues come with baggage. I still can't believe how lucky we are to have found her.

She's really a cutie. I'd ask your Vet about the Lab, though. It's hard to tell in the picture, but she looks a bit longhaired to be a pure Labrador Retriever. May be a Flat Coated Retriever, which is an amazing, very smart, pretty mellow breed. The grey in the lower muzzle looks about right for the age to me. Congrats on a wonderful member of your family. :)

I always groom my own dogs because I can't really imagine paying someone to do it. Its easier than people think.

@Glynda, I bought my dogs' grooming supplies from Amazon, I have clippers and a set of attachable combs (which controls how short the clip is). In my dogs' pic above (the one where they're looking through the fence), the one on the right is "natural" (she has a lighter coat without me doing anything) and the one of the left was just groomed by me maybe 5 days ago. You can see they look pretty similar.

Bascially, I just run the clippers with the appropriate comb attached all over her whole body to create a uniform length coat. Then I groom her head, ears and face without the comb to make the cut a little closer. Then I trim her beard and eyebrows with scissors.

Your dog would lose her beautiful coat if you did the same, so maybe youre not quite ready to go there. But if the day comes that you need to go for the puppy clip, its really not that hard to DIY.

Just based upon how she eats food, I am 100% sure that there is no Lab in there. She doesn't care about food. At all. Clearly not a Lab. There's no retriever in there either, lol. Our best guess is part Newfoundland (but she's only 65 lbs) and maybe Border Collie? We just don't know. She's a herder but she's ridiculously low energy. Like blob energy. The only time she moves faster than a walk is when she is chasing other dogs at the dog park, and even then it's 5 or 6 running steps before she drops down to a little trot. And the other dogs run in a circle; she just runs diagonally to meet them on the other side of the park.

We brought her home in 2017 after dealing with a year of cancer treatments and my husband's heart attack. We had to have a dog that would fit into our life without causing a lot of stress. I honestly believe that she was sent to us intentionally. My husband was not raised with dogs and has tolerated the five dogs that we have owned over our marriage, three Labs and two mixes, but Kaya is truly *his* dog. It's a beautiful thing to see.

Ok. Newfoundland sounds better, and makes more sense - especially with those feet. (Are they webbed?) The coat looks more Newfie than Lab to me. Is she all one color, or does she have other markings? Based on her smaller size, she probably has some other low-key working breed in there, maybe even German Shepherd. Newfies are pretty deliberate in what they do, like a lot of Working Breed dogs, so I think you're on to something there. You've had Labs, so you know what to expect from a Sporting Breed - a very different experience. :)

This is what my boys are up to most days right now. I've never seen such sleepyheads. :)

Her coat is totally Newfie. Even our groomer said so. She shows Bernese Mountain Dogs and felt that her coat was very similar. No, her feet are not webbed but I have never seen fur grow like hers - especially around her feet. It's hilarious. She is kind of double coated, but not like a Lab. It's much lighter in texture. She's totally black, but when her fur gets long, it gets a brownish tinge. Not sure what that's about, but that's why she needed a trim. And as much as I like our groomer (and when she grooms Kaya she looks like a show dog) it is an all day affair. She's a one man show so she brings in 4 or 5 dogs each day and does the grooming assembly line style, and they are crated when it's not their turn. I think that it stresses Kaya out although she seems to be resigned to her fate. Once we are through this, I may have the groomer shave her belly for the summer, but then I will just clean her up throughout the year. Btw, Kaya is with your pups in spirit. Sound asleep.
