And since this is an opinion piece, it may not.

It is not an opinion that some studies have shown mask usage is 80-90%.

We will agree to disagree. I think when a tragedy doubles it is significant. And to be honest I hope this wave stops at a doubling. I would be confident if we were doing anything to slow this down.

At least the nature article actually said where their data came from as opposed to this opinion piece.

Did you read the article?

I think folks do not understand the difference between an opinion and data if they are discrediting everything in an opinion article as an opinion.

I will say it again. Don't believe in masks. Enjoy your shutdown (including the schools) and the subsequent damage that does to the economy. Wear your mask and enjoy the relative good news coming out of school openings along with most business' that can operate safely as long as community spread is under control.

I will say it again -- in Chicago, our mask compliance is near universal yet Chicago schools aren't open and most school in the suburbs are "barely" open. Masks aren't fixing the problems here in Chicago. In fact, it's the opposite. And, No, I'm not blaming masks.

Restaurants are not open to indoor dining in IL.

And now we have this....

As coronavirus cases in Chicago continue to spike, Mayor Lori Lightfoot will impose a 10-person limit on weddings, birthday parties, funerals and some social events starting Monday morning.
While stopping short of issuing a citywide shutdown order, Lightfoot also is urging residents to stay home during the coming weeks. As part of her stay-at-home advisory, Lightfoot is encouraging residents not to leave their homes except to work, attend school, seek medical care, shop for groceries or pick up takeout food.

Then I will ask again. Please post any study that says masks do no good. Your article does not make that claim. I have posted dozens stating the other side. Explain how hospitals manage to keep their workers relatively safe despite the constant contact they have with covid patients. Explain the almost perfect correlation to larger outbreaks correlating virtually 100% with mask mandates. Here is the top 10 sorted by per capita cases.

o
If you look the reason stated is because of small family gatherings. No one anywhere has stated that wearing a mask is the only thing needed. That whole region is under the gun. Masks are not a silver bullet but not wearing them is pretty well correlated to severe outbreaks. The only tools we have at this point are masks and social distancing. I am flabbergasted at the constant resistance to using the only tools we have to change a trajectory that will lead to 100s of thousands of deaths.

come on -- Lori Lightfoot has zero evidence that outbreaks are due to small family gatherings.

Keep in mind -- she was out in the streets in crowds last weekend (mask free talking into a megaphone) at big election celebrations. Our governor was doing the same - even stepping (gasp!) indoors into a crowd.

It's hard to take these people & their health directives seriously.

Really curious how you know what a high level government official knows or does not know.

Looks like she has aides keeping her social distanced to me. But nice job at mask shaming from one picture.
Yes, I will mask shame her b/c she's a complete hypocrite. Back in April getting a haircut during the complete & total lockdown b/c her hygiene is important:

"I’m the public face of this city,” she said looking somewhat taken aback. “I’m on national media,” and “I’m out in the public eye.”

Why should we listen to her when she doesn't lead by example?

Maybe because she is briefed daily and has a huge organization that she can draw from.

Yesterday Gov Pritzker commented that our neighboring state, Iowa , has a positivity rate of 48%. He then went on to say "If you run into two people from Iowa, one has Covid". What? That's not what the positivity rate is.

This is exactly why I cannot take these people seriously.

Some people like to say that they are claiming every one who died died of Covid. 12 from our community died since Covid and none of them had Covid as the cause of death

Not sure what you are saying here. Are you criticizing the fact that the 48% positive rate does not equal 50%, or that the fact that 48% of the tests are positive does not mean 48% of the people are positive?

While the statement may not be technically accurate to a degree sufficient for the anal-retentive, presuming Iowa has a high rate of testing, the number is reasonably accurate, and obviously the point is even more important: that rate is ENORMOUS. Whether it be 1 in 2 or 1 in 3, lots of people likely have it (unless they are only testing the symptomatic, etc. )

some of you are quite stubborn at following rules...

According to a National Geographic survey: Despite noisy no-mask protests, 92 percent of 2,200 Americans polled say they wear a face mask when leaving their home, with 74 percent saying they “always” do. That “always” percentage is up nearly a quarter since July, according to the poll, which has a 2 percent margin of error.

So why is Covid sky rocketing?

real science from the cdc.

Human Studies of Masking and SARS-CoV-2 Transmission

Data regarding the “real-world” effectiveness of community masking are limited to observational and epidemiological studies.

  • An investigation of a high-exposure event, in which 2 symptomatically ill hair stylists interacted for an average of 15 minutes with each of 139 clients during an 8-day period, found that none of the 67 clients who subsequently consented to an interview and testing developed infection. The stylists and all clients universally wore masks in the salon as required by local ordinance and company policy at the time.32
  • In a study of 124 Beijing households with > 1 laboratory-confirmed case of SARS-CoV-2 infection, mask use by the index patient and family contacts before the index patient developed symptoms reduced secondary transmission within the households by 79%.33
  • A retrospective case-control study from Thailand documented that, among more than 1,000 persons interviewed as part of contact tracing investigations, those who reported having always worn a mask during high-risk exposures experienced a greater than 70% reduced risk of acquiring infection compared with persons who did not wear masks under these circumstances.34
  • A study of an outbreak aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, an environment notable for congregate living quarters and close working environments, found that use of face coverings on-board was associated with a 70% reduced risk.35
  • Investigations involving infected passengers aboard flights longer than 10 hours strongly suggest that masking prevented in-flight transmissions, as demonstrated by the absence of infection developing in other passengers and crew in the 14 days following exposure.36,37

So why is Covid sky rocketing?
Saying yes but not actually wearing a mask or properly are probably the most likely answers. Need a study of how many actually do and wear it properly.
