Happy Aloha Friday!!! Another August is complete and we head into September. Fall will be official in a few weeks and the colors will start to change on the mainland.

This week's picture takes us back to Kauai and to it's North shore. This is a picture of the Hanalei Pier about ten years ago during its canopy restoration. The Hanalei Rotary raised $170,000 to complete the project. The Pier was originally made of wood prior to 1892 but it needed constant repairs. In 1921 it was decided a new Pier made of concrete was needed and it was completed in 1922.

Enjoy and have an Awesome Aloha Friday and a Great weekend. shaka

Happy Aloha Friday. I just watched an old, but not very good movie filmed in Kauai. Beachhead in 1954, starred a very young Tony Curtis. Here's what the Hanalei Pier looked like back then. In the movie they called the canopy "an open shed". Looks like there used to be a railroad going down the pier.

Happy Aloha Friday!!! Fall is closing in, Football Season started yesterday. It still takes some getting used to watching football at 7am on Sunday mornings.

This week's photo takes us back to Kauai and Grove Farm in Lihue. We took a tour of Grove Farm in 2018. The farm, a Sugar Plantation, was started in 1854 by German Immigrant Hermann Widermann. Who later became a Supreme Court Judge in Honolulu. He sold the farm to George Wilcox. Who kept the farm in the family for over 100 years. His missionary upbringing influenced him as a quiet and generous philanthropist leaving legacies of Churches, Schools and the G.N. Wilcox Memorial Hospital which is still there to this day.

Enjoy and have a Great Aloha and an awesome weekend!! shaka

Happy Aloha Friday!

I wanted to share some photos from our time while staying in the area of Kailua-Kona. We had a very comfortable stay at the WorldMark Kona for our 7 nights. This resort is located on Ali’i Drive and is bordered by the Wyndham Kona Hawaiian resort. This was helpful to know as the tours/excursion desk is located in the lobby area of this resort. There is a gated pass-through that connects each of these properties, and it is quite convenient to go between them. We stayed in a two bedroom unit which appeared to be recently renovated and in excellent condition. Not nearly as worn out as was our two bedroom unit last summer in Kihei. To be honest, we did not spend much time in either unit besides eating and sleeping, so not a huge factor for us.

We purchased the Shaka Guide Big Island bundle which was worth every penny. We completed three of them, including the Kona Big Kahuna tour, Kohala Coast Backcountry Tour, and Volcanoes National Park Tour.

The worst part of a vacation like this is getting back to reality!

Here we go. Fresh cut flower arrangement purchased at the Ali’i Garden Marketplace. Enjoyed having on the table throughout our stay. We visited twice and brought home a variety of candies, jewelry and balsamic vinegars from the vendors here. Great selection of items.

Happy Friday! We've been at our home in Reno for a couple of weeks. We've had some welcome rain, and there is a hint of fall in the air up here at 5,000 feet. Wednesday, we went to a mountain park on the Mt.Rose highway (Galena) and enjoyed some walking and a picnic:

Happy Aloha Friday!!! Fall is in the air and colors will start to change on the mainland soon. It's starting to cool down at night a bit here. It won't be long and the whales will be returning.

This week's photo takes us back to Oahu and Waikiki to Diamond Head. Diamond Head is a Volcanic Tuff Cone and a National Natural Monument. In Hawaiian it is known as Le'ahi. It became known as Diamond Head when 19th century British Soldiers saw Calcite Crystal's on the nearby beach. It is one of the most dynamic city backdrops of any large city in the world.

Enjoy and have a Great Aloha Friday and an Awesome Weekend!!! shaka

Happy Aloha Friday!

On Monday, most people were remembering what happened on 9/11/2001. On Kauai, most people were also remembering what happened on 9/11/1992 when hurricane Iniki devastated the island, causing $3 billion in damage and six deaths.

Our first trip to Kauai was in 1986 and we stayed at the Poipu Beach Hotel, next to the Waiohai. This is what it looked like back then.

1986 Poipu Beach Hotel.jpg

It was a very basic, and inexpensive hotel. I didn't like it because the doors to the room were lourverd. It helped the air circulation, but you could hear everything in the hallway, and they could hear everything going on in your room. o_O When Iniki hit, the hotel was severely damaged. They had to strip it down to the concrete framing and completely rebuild the interior. It took 17 years. Finally in 2009, the resort was reborn and reconstructed to what it is now, the very high end Ko`a Kea Resort. By then we had bought our timeshare weeks at The Point at Poipu, so we haven't been back to check it out. We do hope to try the hotel's Red Salt restaurant next year. It's supposed to be a good one.

Happy Aloha Friday to all!

I wanted to share a few photos before this great day is through. These were captured three weeks ago during the evening of our one and only Aloha Friday on the Big Island, August 25th. After the intense helicopter tour of the island earlier that morning, we were fortunate to keep up the energy to observe the sunset from the upper area across the road near the Maúna Kea Visitor Center. This area is at about 9,200 ft above sea level, far below the summit. On a future adventure we may opt for a tour to get to the summit with a 4x4 tour, but this was such a relaxing drive each way that I would happily do it again. Mahalo!

Happy Aloha Friday!! Nine more days and we move into October. Then the mainland will get fall colors and soon it will be Halloween.

This week's photo takes us back to Oahu and the Hilton Hawaiian Village. This picture was taken from the 19th floor of the Rainbow Tower overlooking the harbor. The Rainbow Tower is fitting since this rainbow appeared after a brief shower.

Enjoy and have an Awesome Aloha Friday and a Great weekend!! shaka
