The answer lies in a definition of words. Look at the word points, and that one word tells you nothing. The answer is the type of points. A mere Marriott timeshare may or may not have points. As you recall most old deeded weeks do not have points, just a usable or exchangeable week's
use. The came either grandfathered weeks you resubmitted into the vacation club, which is a week plus an election into points. The came weeks purchased directly from Marriott that are point of the Trust. These last two times have Marriott Vacation Club Points, and I believe the
deadline to convert those into "Marriott Reward Points" is June 30th each year. In the past 20 years, I certainly never converted Vacation Club Points into Reward Points simply because Vacation Club Points which are usable for timeshare weeks convert at a greatly substantial lesser
value for Reward Points. I have a great number of Reward points available either a Chase Marriott Card bonus at sign up, or by using the credit card for Marriott related expenses such as MF or rental and obtain 6 Marriott Reward Point per dollar spent. As such Marriott Reward points
is like a free( ha ha) bonus, just like you get airlines bonus points after spending hundreds of dollars buying an airline ticket. To illustrate, a "free" night using Marriott Reward points obtained from spending money on Marriott averages for me charging $5,000 to get a free night. So clearly
Marriott Rewards works good for high Marriott/SPG uses, and not the average guy unless you play the credit card sign up game, which is certainly not desired by a lot people, except the card does give you a free night annually which is of value if you indeed annually use it.
