Assessing Risk: Where are you now? Where will you be this summer?

1. Total isolation with almost no chance of illness. Stay in your house or apartment, alone or with family. Do not allow anyone else inside unless an emergency occurs. Do not have any in-person contact with friends or other family members. Have all groceries delivered. Disinfect anything that comes into your house. Do all your own food prep and housecleaning. Do not have your teeth cleaned. See doctors only by telemedicine; refuse any elective medical procedures. Go outdoors only when you are sure you will not encounter other people. Work only from home. Find whatever pleasure and entertainment you can inside your house. Feel secure in the probability that you will not contract the virus.

2. Significant isolation with a very small chance of illness or death. As above, but allow a trusted cleaning person or handyman to come into your house occasionally; have a short conversation with him or her, always wearing a mask and gloves. Go to drug or grocery stores occasionally, always gloved and masked. Buy takeout food. Exercise outside alone or with your partner. If people approach you, wave them away. Limit contact with family and friends except those living with you.

3. Some isolation with a small chance of illness or death. As above, but go to a wider variety of stores. See a doctor or dentist if necessary. Allow short conversations with people you meet outside or in a store. Resume selected outdoor sports. Accept and initiate invitations for limited activities with trusted friends and family at home, with social distancing and masks. Go to your workplace if you can drive yourself and don’t have to interact with colleagues or customers. Reach out to some people who might need help.

4. A relatively large amount of openness and some chance of illness or death. As above, but accept and initiate invitations for drinks or dinner, outside or inside, with trusted friends and family. Resume outside activities like restaurants you trust, religious services, going to your job and doing volunteer work—with social distancing and masks. Go to salons, barber shops, retail establishments or movie theaters that facilitate social distancing. Travel only when necessary.

5. Total openness with a significant chance of illness or death. Do any activity, including going to any restaurant, gym, theater, concert or sporting event—as you did pre-Covid. Travel whenever you want. Look for more opportunities to help others. Work as necessary or desired. With or without social distancing and masks.

I'm going to be a 4-5 with a mask. I usually mostly stay inside and entertain myself with my PS4 and my computer anyways. I never dine in, get my haircut (just use my own scissors), or go to the gym (use my neighborhood). I don't shop retail stores ever; way too overpriced. I've always gotten everything either online or at Goodwill/Dollar store. During the summer I mainly go out to use the community pool, which I will still do and keep my distance, or go to a theme park. I still plan on using the Legoland and Busch Gardens/Sea World passes that I bought (wearing a mask), and going to Bonnet Creek, Reunion and Wyndham Clearwater this summer with my points. I usually avoid a crowded beach anyways and will only be on it between 7-9 am or 5-8 pm as I normally do. I am an introvert, so the only effect Covid has on me is economical (my husband's start date has been delayed/cancelled).

....there is still a faction of "stay home forever until cure is found" faction who refuse to acknowledge we may have shot ourselves to save possibly catching a virus-but the shot WILL kill us.

Who are these Home Forever people? I haven't seen anyone, any group, advocate for that. Where are you seeing info on this 'faction'?

Interesting Data on the virus affects on various age groups. Scenario 5 is based on current data, the others make various assumptions

Still I'm at 4.

Cheers

Thanks for this.

A reminder how unclear the future is at this point. A wide range of outcomes depending on whether R0 is 2.0, 2.5, or 3.0.

No discussion of social distancing practices--maybe that's what drives R0?

I had to take my husband to his doctor, who had informed us he is retiring end of June. His wife is a pediatrician. We had to call and they let us in. His wife did the weigh in, the blood pressure, etc. the doctor told us he finally had to let his office staff go. Many of his patients have been unable to pay because they weren’t working. The overhead is too much to keep the office open.

Even before this epidemic I had three successive internists retire in two years. I felt like a cowboy having his horse shot out from under.

Around here the driving force was the local university hospital system buying up all the practices. Restructuring so they're under heavy time pressure for patient turnaround and turning them into servants of a computerized oversight system.

And how small a portion of the billed amount the insurance company pays. All the minuses of a single payer system without the plusses.

Finally had a chance to venture out and grab a piece of civility at McAllister's today. Really hit home how different life is going to be for quite some time ...

At any rate, this is the first establishment I have visited with masks required. Signage posted clearly on door about requirement of masks. No problem - thankfully a nice enough day for the patio.

The new norm will take some getting used to...

So to answer the initial question- somewhere between 2 and 3 I think..

My college senior works at the McAllisters in Fayetteville AR- masks required, for most part people are compliant, always have the couple who think everything is a hoax  . Hoax or not if the establishment says masks to come inside then mask required to come inside. Can always order on app and have it run out to car. But I’ve told her that it’snot worth getting shot over a mask...knock wood nothing happens. It is Arkansas (and before I get too flamed I lived there for 5 years and my youngest was born in Little Rock:p)

I don’t believe that A. staying healthy (and alive) and B. going out or traveling are mutually exclusive.

We did the SIP for 3 weeks Late March to April while DH had a mild case of Covid. Then I started venturing out to grocery shop because Instacart made too many errors, BUT I followed all the guidelines.

We just came back from a week in Hilton Head, driving, still following guidelines, eating in for the most part, going to the pool or beach. So nice to be outside.

Living in Florida makes it easy to timeshare over the summer, so we are using our cancelled weeks and points to stay within the state. We plan to go to Orlando, not sure about the parks but relaxing at the pool, hoping to dine out more, and we also will spend a week in Riviera Beach and St Pete Beach each this summer.

We have cruises planned later in the year, haven’t decided what we’re doing about those yet.

So, we are going to stay safe traveling by following the guidelines. ;)

Precisely!
And the ordering process from the patio worked just fine - a tip of the cap to the girl who made it happen! I hope we will see more businesses using outdoor spaces but this is Arkansas, so the season of infernal and never-ending suffering is almost upon us!

Oh yes! There are MANY areas of that city that are sad to see in their current states of existence. The school systems in Arkansas have been leeched for cash by all of the litigation over the years. It is painful to see the state of things and I wish I could say there is improvement on the horizon - but I cannot see that far.

I went from a 2 to a 5. My husband was alway a 5 as he always has stuff to take care of and he is still working. We are wearing masks when we go inside a store and wiping hands and car down after each stop.
We have reservations for Wyndham Smoky Mountain Lodge with water June 13 with our kids and grandkids.
I really don’t feel comfortable going, but the kids are not concerned about this coved 19 at all.

So.....I have been thinking about this scale from time to time today. I often wondered, dear god....am I just over the top on the covid coo-coo scale???? I am normally NOT the person that ever worries about things I cannot control. But, I still feel like I have control over bringing this into my house.

But after a day of consideration, there are too many factors.
1. Geographic location - is your state in the top 5 of Covid cases?
2. Dependent children - do you have school aged kids that still need mom and/or dad?
3. Essential workers - is someone in the household still going out an dealing with the public for work?
4, Have you already had to deal with a death of a loved one during Covid?

I answer yes to all four.

So, here I am feeling crappy/guilty to still being a 1 1/2 and feeling like a lunatic for it . I don't eat out, I don't let anyone in my house, I order 95% of stuff I need online.
I do go out to what I consider lower risk. Example: I needed plants for my garden (my garden is the only thing I do JUST FOR ME). I didn't go to a big box store, I went to small local places on weekdays to avoid crowds.

So here I am...I'm still at a 1 1/2 and I am so over it, but yet I can't progess.

I checked my vacation balance. 240 hours = 6 weeks. 45 hours of comp time.
I can't carry over more than 240 hours. From here on out until the rest of the year I have to use it our loose it.
Looks like I have to burn about 4 weeks from now until December with no where to go!
Every Monday off? Maybe?

Who knows. There are people with worse problems.

You are NOT covid coo-coo crazy! You have had it impact you rather severely. And gardening is therapeutic-hope it helps :) I've got to tackle the weeds around my baby carrots-hate weeding yet satisfaction is good...

Whatever you choose is ok as it is not hurting others. You know what is best for you and your family and there is nothing to feel bad about.

I am where I have always been since February:

4a: The Swedish model. Reasonable precautions in the face of a serious virus. No masks required, but certainly optional and totally acceptable.

We won't be doing any restaurant dining or non-grocery/Home Depot shopping for at least another month. Have a haircut scheduled for June 18, and have been told to stay in car, call to tell them I'm waiting, and don't come in until we call you back. Surprised my dentist by showing up today to the appointment that was robo confirmed on Friday. They aren't actually opening back up for regular appts until next week, but some how there was a screw up. No magazines, chairs fewer and six feet apart in waiting room. Use hand sanitizer, fill out a covid questionnaire, oxygen level and temperature taken at the plexiglass window, mask stays on until she's ready to start working. Good news I got my cleaning done by the dentist herself and she is very thorough, bad news is she is "brutal" compared to the hygienists.

Couple of trips to a landscaping business in a no-mask-required zone over the holiday weekend for a honey-do project. Most customers not wearing masks -- outdoors separated by dozens or hundreds of feet. Pay window was cordoned off at arms length, but less than 6 feet. Employees not wearing masks. Whole experience felt more normal than not.
