What I Did at Home Today...

I had a great phone conversation with a real estate agent in the area I'm looking to move to for retirement. Not committing to a specific property just yet, but opened the conversation. Depending on the ongoing situation, this may happen sooner than later.

Meanwhile, anybody want to buy my current house?

Painted the entry door and door frame. Still have to take the tape off when it’s dry. Color is Benjamin Moore “ Glimmer” as in a “glimmer” of hope. Lord knows we need it.

You might want to get on it. Real estate loans are getting tougher. Even with lower interest rates, many who once qualified won't because they were or are laid off. The banks are checking to see if a person is laid off at closing these days meaning in the 60 days from offer to close many deals are going sideways.

I hate curtains! None in our house! Actually on the opposite side of the window we put in this blinds attachment:

I am undecided about a kick plate. Maybe. I would change out the door handle but then would have to make extra sets of keys again, one for our son again. It's a simple house anyway. We put a storm door in front of it.

I have to think on it more.

@WinniWoman - if you change locks on a door (new hardware) the new lock can be keyed so that your existing keys work. We did this as part of our remodeling efforts here!

@easyrider, @WinniWoman, and @bbodb1: The idea of moving to a retirement location is always close to the front of my thoughts. I retired last month, and my income is secure. With everything Covid-19 going on, my spouse may be taking early retirement. And if that happens, there is no reason not to explore selling out here, and moving to a warmer zip code. We still haven't decided on the exact community, but the general location is pretty well sorted out - for now. So conversations can be started, at least.

With everything Covid-19 going on, my spouse may be taking early retirement. And if that happens, there is no reason not to explore selling out here, and moving to a warmer zip code. We still haven't decided on the exact community, but the general location is pretty well sorted out - for now. So conversations can be started, at least.

Thanks. Can't help you with your search. My house is north of the 40th parallel, but it's only about 250 feet elevation.

We turned on the pool heater this morning and this afternoon our kids and grandkids came over for some pool time fun. It was great to have us all together and we didn't hug or kiss any of them. It was great to be outside.

I only brought it up because selling a house right now has a few covid 19 concerns regarding qualified buyers. Most people sell a house to buy another so if obtaining the new house is relying on the old house selling, there are new considerations these days.

I only brought it up because selling a house right now has a few covid 19 concerns regarding qualified buyers. Most people sell a house to buy another so if obtaining the new house is relying on the old house selling, there are new considerations these days.

We'd sell here before buying anywhere else. I want to go in with a strong position on whatever we decide to buy.

And I'm not worried about selling. My neighbor across the street listed their house a few weeks ago, and got over their asking price within five days. They were in escrow before the realtor was able to put up the For Sale sign.

But Utah is definitely on our list - Colorado, Washington and Utah are the main candidates....for now!

I do believe I recall the tax situation there is favorable - but then again, any state is likely favorable when compared to Illinois!

There are a number of Tuggers who live in Nevada. Southern Nevada is at the top of my list of where I want to be. I'm not a gambler, but I do enjoy the entertainment found in cities like Las Vegas. We have family and good friends within a few hours' drive in any direction from there, and our favorite vacation destinations are just as close.

Biggest Pros: Good state to retire in, no state income tax, reasonable property taxes, good property values, great central location to all the southwest USA has to offer. Decent weather most of the year. Las Vegas McCarran Airport is becoming a good starting point for travel all over the USA and Europe. Huge employment infrastructure in all areas of expertise.

Biggest Cons: Weather can get mighty hot for several months in Summer. Las Vegas area is crowded, and weekend visitors make it even more crowded (if you want to go where the tourists go.) Opportunistic crime can be a factor, (but not really any more than any other large city.)

Compare taxation in Utah to those other states - it's what took that state off my list. Western Washington has drive-to ski areas, if that's a draw, and skiing four to five months a year, great hiking year-round. Reasonable weather most of the year, (if you don't kind rain at any time of year, often for extended periods of time.) No state income tax, choices of size and "urban-ness" of communities to live in. 420 is not just a number here - it's an essential business.
