I think it was Robin Williams who said, "Cocaine is Nature's way of telling you that you make too much money."

Such a shame to see yet another idol be ruined.

Returned from a memorial service this afternoon for a friend who died at age 40; collapsed at work and by the time someone found him it was too late.... the world lost a man whose joy in life was making other people's lives better and who didn't expect anything back except for his joy in knowing that he helped.

My condolences on the loss of your friend.
It is a tragedy whenever anyone who had much to contribute dies too soon, leaving their potential unfulfilled. Or whenever someone's life is taken cruely by evil means.

IMHO -- We mark the passing of celebrities, not merely for their notoriety or becuz they are any more deserving, but becuz as a community, we've shared in the enrichment they brought to our culture and our families. We share a sense that our society is (or will be) a slightly more dreary place.

Rejoice on what she contributed to music, not her tragic private life. JMHO.

I saw her in Greensboro in concert. She was wonderful. My date and I were dancing in the aisles. What a tragic loss. I still remember her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Very sad. shaggy

What I'm getting at is that I have a hard time getting overly worked about the death of some celebrity who is just that - a celebrity and that's all.

The deaths that are tragic are the ones where the person leaves a true void in a huge circle of lives - not just immediate family and friends.

Yes, its unfortunate that Whitney Houston died, and died relatively young. Yes there is pain and sorrow. But to me it's really not anything more than just another premature death; the fact that she was a celebrity neither adds to nor takes away from her death.

But Matt's death ... the world lost a man whose joy in life was making other people's lives better and who didn't expect anything back except for his joy in knowing that he helped. I would gladly trade fewer Whitneys for more Matts.
What's the point in a comparison? Why describe her as "a celebrity and that's all"? Why assume Whitney's death doesn't leave a true void in a huge circle of lives, even though it doesn't leave a void in yours? Why use your feelings about Matt's death as a way to diminish the death of another?

IMO her celebrity doesn't diminish the tragedy of anyone else's death, anymore than theirs diminishes hers.

I remember thinking the first time I heard I will always love you, that it was the most perfect song I had ever heard.

I wasn't a huge Whitney fan, but she might have had the best voice ever!

I remember Dolly Parton singing her song - "I Will Always Love You" at the end of her show every week when I was younger. I didn't much like country, and she was everything country that my Mom hated, (I watched at my Dad's) yet I liked the show and found myself liking her...I really liked the simple song.

When I heard Whitney's rendition of the song I was amazed. It took me a bit to realise it was indeed the same song. That's when I started paying more attention to Whitney's voice rather than just dancing to her pop songs... Truly an amazing singer that got sidetracked.

Everyone's probably heard that song, but here's a quick link to it... enjoy!

Kinda has more of a special meaning today.

I didn't see these posts, but I also thank you for the smack-down to whomever.

From Denise's post, guess it must've been someone's name that started with Ride... whomever that could be... :)

I too went to a memorial yesterday, not someone I was super close to but I am close to his mother. It was very sudden and he was exactly my age. It has certainly impacted me more than Whitney's death and yes, I agree, if one of them could come back . . .

I do agree though that we tend to "mourn" celebrities because of the memories that their performances invoke in us. For me when I think of Whitney Houston, it's memories of my daughter playing Houston's debut CD at full volume in her room as a kid, and yeah, actually singing into a hairbrush.

I had the same feelings when Michael Jackson died. It wasn't a personal loss but it brought back memories of watching my toddlers dance to his music, when it was all the rage in the '80s.

Feeling a little maudlin today, I think.

Report is a combination of Xanax and alcohol. She fell asleep in the bathtub, went under, and drowned.

Took my wife to see Jeffrey Osbourne in concert in 1985 at the Valley Forge Music Fair. We were blown away by a singer that opened for him... Whitney was amazing!

I agree. I think we all know the difference between mourning a personal friend/relative and a celebrity.

We mourn Whitney for her music that we've spent countless hours listening to. We mourn for what she could have been if she led her life differently.

I agree completely. Whitney and I have a lot in common. That being, we are/were both wives, we are both mothers, daughters, aunts, cousins, god children, nieces. We are both loved by someone.

If I died tomorrow it may be months before anyone here would say, "Hey, where did Laura go?" Some of you may not notice at all. But that wouldn't diminish the significance in the lives of the people who love me. We are all someone's "loved ones", which means, we ALL have something in common with Whitney Houston.

She wasn't just a celebrity to her family and friends, but to us, that's all she really is/ was. Steve's point was that she is just a celebrity to those of us who knew her only because she was famous. I understand what he is saying.

So many true heroes die every day, and their deaths do go unnoticed.

Steve, your story was heartwarming and sad. Such a tragic loss of a young man who truly cared about others. He was so young and could have done so much more.

A celebrity's life often gets way too much attention.

All the major news channels spent 8 plus minutes on Whitney Houston this morning. I am sorry for her, her family and her friends. Her gift of music to the world will live on. I will, like so many others, always consider "I Will Always Love You" one of the greatest songs ever. But as far as news goes, I would much rather have had 8 minutes on Greece and the financial implications and the fact that our national budget is being presented today. Those facts have much more impact on my life and really are news.

Whitney Houston's death, while a sad thing, was the direct result of very unwise life choices. It dominates the news.

Charlie Sheen is 45 and his story is all over the news because he is a
substance abuser, an adulterer, sexually promiscuous and obnoxious.

Lindsay Lohan is 24 and her story is all over the news because she is a
celebrity drug addict and thief.

Something as frivolous as Kim Kardashian’s stupid wedding [and short-lived marriage] was shoved down our throats, While........

So true. News will slow down a bit about Whitney, but prepare for a media frenzy when the coroner's report comes in.
