I understand that some people vacation in hotel rooms, but I can't imagine how.

Not just one or two nights but entire vacations!

My family members who are lucky enough to travel with us but travel with others always say they like the way we travel. They are amazed at how large our condos are compared to a hotel room.

One type of trip I enjoy are road trips. It is hard not to stay in hotels on a road trip. We try to catch bonus time at resorts but for a night here and there but it is usually hotels. I like the Courtyard by Marriott, Hampton Inn and Hilton's but some times it's fun to stay at some very questionable place in the middle of no where.

Although I rent now, I did have 9 timeshares at 9 different resorts in my early 40s. I bought them mainly for my parents so I could get them off on regular Vacation. As they were very poor, I used to give them flights, spending money, book activities and a week whenever they had a birthday or Christmas. As they got older, they found travelling too cumbersome so I gave them other things. I did use them here and there too and did enjoy them.

As I was spending between 10500 and 11 k a year in MF, exchange fees, RCI fees, etc., I decided to dump them all and just rent. I do try to rent a timeshare first because they are nice places overall and are spacious. If not, I just rent whatever.

As of a couple of years back, I invest the money I used to pay MF and other fees and now use the dividends to travel when I can. Up to about a year ago, I travelled a lot until my dad got sick with Cancer. He has recently passed and now I am holding off a bit to make sure my Mom is fine. Being an only child means it’s really up to me.

I must say the memories I had owning timeshares were wonderful. I especially enjoyed sharing with my parents and I know they built great memories.

Who knows? I may buy again if the situation and terms look right. Of course, it would be resale all the way.

@Panina, I am sorry to hear the loss of your husband. It sounds like he was quite young. I am glad to hear you and him had wonderful vacationing memories. Its those memories that becomes so priceless especially when they pass on. From reading many of your posts, I can tell that you are a wonderful person. He was a very lucky man to have someone like you.

Owning timeshares for the benefits of your parents tells me you are a wonderful person too. I lost my dad two years ago and still take care of my moms needs. I can definitely understand the emotions and obligations you have.

We bought our first week 25 years ago, I'm 59 now, was good at first than became difficult to trade and use. Planning a vacation was not so easy.
2009 the point system is formed, bought another week to get into the points. Was frustrating using the system because I couldn't get commitment from my wife for vacation. We gave more away than we used.
Now finding the after market sales getting the rest of my weeks for nothing, to paying me to take them off there hands.
I find that it is much easier to use now making sure I pick reservations that also circle our breaks renting extra weeks paying its own way.
Have plenty of points to book any vacation needed. With many avenues to get the points to do so. I call it robbing Peter to give to Paul, and it works very well.

When I only had 2 weeks it was much harder to use and I was like many here just wanted to throw in the towel.

I am very happy with it now , living a dream.

We are in our 50s and found timesharing 5 years ago. I am amazed by some of the capabilities that Marriott owners had in the 90s in terms of hotel points conversions. They have a right to whine!

We like the additional options timesharing provides but not putting all our travel eggs in one basket so trying to limit to what we have now - even though it is tempting to add more. But will augment with rental and hotel points.

Lol no just an observation from my time here. Boomers whine when something in their ts changes to serve the new target market of millenials, whine when phone lines are busy 1st week January, whine when they get cold called or a salesman's verbal promise isn't true. Times change

In our early sixties now, first timeshare we bought was also a DVC 11 years ago. Couldn't afford one until kids finished college, or didn't want one when our pets were with us (3 elderly dogs) back then. Now we own about 4-5 weeks and we use them all each year.

Bought my first timeshare thanks to Tug 7 years ago (30's back then) after 1 year of reading forums and soliciting advice from the great folks on this page.

I just wish I knew about tug and timeshares sooner!! Timeshares have enabled my family and husband's family to have annual get together's, invite friends to come with us and we have been in lots of new destinations because timeshares made it affordable to do so! God willing, we hope to have many more memories

We're in our mid fifties with a teenage daughter. While I love timeshares, we only rent them or occasionally have been able to use Marriott Reward points for timeshare stays. Definitely appreciate having two bedrooms and a full kitchen rather than a traditional hotel room. So far, haven't had any compelling reason to become an owner. Perhaps when we eventually retire, might get a week or a few weeks to be able to use like a second vacation home.
