I took these photos on a trip I made to the Azores Islands in Portugal. This church is too beautiful. I climbed a few steps but it's worth it because the view from the church is beautiful. You can see the sea and a bit of the village... Super recommended!

Choosing a favorite is really tough. There are so many beautiful churches. But I've got to make a choice, so these were taken inside a chapel that I shouldn't even need to identify because the artist and the images are so well known. The guards were telling people not to take photos, but everyone was doing it anyway (no flash, of course). This was taken in 2005, with a much older digital camera that had far less resolution than today's cameras, and we had to hold our camera very steady. First we are looking up at the ceiling, and then looking straight ahead.

And if you still don't recognize it, well, that's the Sistine Chapel and you have to visit it if you haven't. The Vatican Museum is one of the most fabulous museums in the world.

One thing about that ceiling picture that amuses me. I had a credit card once that allowed card holders to customize the image on the card at no charge. So I sent in that image of the Sistine Chapel ceiling so that I could have a special and beautiful credit card. But the photo was rejected. Why? The credit card company considered it pornographic.

Since we now live in Santa Fe this is no longer a travel picture. But it's an amazing staircase in the Loretto Chapel.

This thread is now long enough that it's fun to scroll through and count how many of these churches you've actually visited.

I counted 13 so far (not counting the occasional duplicate), but I'm sure others will top me.

These aren’t fancy, nor the prettiest churches, but they have been some of the more meaningful ones I have seen in my travels. Mainly for what they represent.

The first here is the Maryam (St. Mary) church on Entoto Mountain in Ethiopia. Definitely different architecture from what we normally think of as a church. Fun fact: Ethiopia doesn’t follow the Gregorian calendar, so it is currently 2012 there. Christmas is also celebrated on January 7th (which was fun as I landed there on January 6th not realizing the next day was a holiday and most places were closed).

The next one is of the Mu-en church in downtown Shanghai. It is dwarfed by the scale and commercialism of all the other buildings. You don’t see many crosses in China - so it was unusual when I saw this place.

This lovely little church was built by a man in honor of his son, who he had lost. It was somewhere along the road between Johannesburg and Durban, South Africa. We were there in 2012, but I don't know where my notes are to be able to tell you more about it...I have since tried to take a photo of signs also, to place my photos...

And this tree seemed to be eating the "Picnic Spot" sign, near the church, lolz

Here is a Christian church at Nzulezu, a village on stilts in Ghana, West Africa. One of my former international students and I explored her country together. It was a wonderful and amazing trip!

We had to take a small boat to get there

Homestay Guesthouse was the closest thing they had to a timeshare in the area...

This was another very special place we visited. The Larabanga Mosque is a mosque built in the Sudanese architectural style in the village of Larabanga, Ghana. It is the oldest mosque in the country and one of the oldest in West Africa, and has been referred to as the "Mecca of West Africa". Built circa 1421
