Thank you Fredflinstone for creating this post. I really enjoy this topic. It gives me the opportunity to think about places we've visited and then think about what churches we've seen while visiting. We've gone to many of the churches mentioned here, including La Sagrada Famiia, the Duomo, Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, and the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. We've stopped off a few times at the Old Sheldon Church Ruins in Yamassee when driving between Charleston and Hilton Head.

This is not meant to be disrespectful but I was thinking about a long weekend we spent in Philadelphia two weeks before Pope Francis arrived in September 2015. One of our highlights was a visit to the Franklin Institute, which had an exhibit on the Vatican. There we saw a to-scale replica of the Vatican and St. Peter's Square which was built by a priest from Pennsylvania. It took him almost a year to build, weighed over 100 pounds and was made up of hundreds of thousands of Legos. I was going to post photos we took while actually visiting the Vatican but I think you might enjoy this.

When it comes to churches, I hope there's no harm resurrecting an old post.

Here is the Mekeel’s Corners Chapel at the intersection of Routes 9 and 301 in Garrison, NY. (East side of Hudson River opposite from West Point.) Built in 1867 and originally Methodist Episcopal. No plumbing or electricity. Before the pandemic it had been used for July 4 celebrations.

Here is the Dutch Church in Fishkill, NY. Original church was built in 1725. During the Revolutionary War it was used as a provincial congress and a prison.

Check out the gold rooster on top of the spire. The gold rooster is commonly found on Dutch churches of that time. The most prevalent explanation for the rooster is that this symbol is a reminder of the betrayal of Peter ("Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times"). When seeing the rooster, Christians are warned not to deny their Lord.

All Saint’s Church in Northamptonshire is one of the largest Anglo-Saxon churches in England. One architectural historian described it as, “perhaps the most imposing architectural memorial of the 7th century surviving north of the Alps” and it’s easy to see why. Built in a Romanesque style the nave (main body) of the church is entirely Anglo-Saxon in construction and dates from the 7th century. There is also a stair turret from the 10th century. The only noticeable part of the church which isn’t pre-Conquest is the tower and spire from the 14th century.

The Sheldon Church ruins. A cast member at the Disney HH ressort mentioned them to me and I stopped by a few weeks ago. They’re located at the halfway point between HH and Charleston when driving the back way.

I understand that the ruins are surrounded by a fence now. Vandals just have to ruin things. Some grave stones were said to be missing also. I love Old Sheldon.

We were in Barcelona and could only see the outside of this church because it was being restored. I saw they've completed the restoration.

If I recall correctly, it wasn’t just being restored. It hadn’t been finished.

The Hagia Sophia was in the news recently because the president of Turkey converted it back from a museum to a mosque. It was built in 537 as a patriarchal cathedral, and was the world's largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years. It was converted to a mosque in 1453, and then to a museum in 1935. Three months after we were there in 2015, a bomb went off close to where this picture was taken, killing 13 tourists. I'll never get DW to visit Istanbul again.
