Hi there everyone,

Hope you are not too hot! It's been gorgeous here in sunny San Diego, about 75-80 all week.

How is the Challenge coming along? Are you still there and with me? It's hard over the summer. I started Jenny Craig last Thursday and have been VERY HUNGRY on my 1200 calorie diet. Soooo, I know it's working. I think I am down 2 pounds although it's only been 5 days. The food is great (but pricy). Of course, there is not enough of it and I am usually starved by dinner and again late at night. But I am told it will get better with time. For now, I am happy to have found a plan that is so simple for me that is making me stick to it.

How is everyone else doing? Check in and let us know! Katherine

Day 1 for me on South Beach. I weigh myself weekly so I won't have an update until Sunday on any weight loss. I already miss bread and no wine or cocktails for 2 weeks either :bawl: I am sure I will be checking in for encouragement as I have never been on a diet before. Maui is 8 months away and I would like to lose at least 35 pounds by then.

Catherine

Hi Catherine. This is Katherine! LOL! Welcome and good luck. It's only day 5 of Jenny Craig for me so I know what you mean about it being tough. I am hungry right now. Going to much on some carrots! Sigh.

Catherine and Katherine

Good Luck to both of you. :cheer: I should be joining you, maybe soon.

Hi K and C rine's :)
I too started a "diet" on Monday as we are going on a cruise in exactly one month. You'd think our daughter's wedding (last month) would have inspired me but it just didn't happen. I'm off to a good start, just trying to keep the calorie count down and drink lots of water. I've got about 15 lbs. to lose so not TOO bad. I lost 20 lbs. on Nutri System a couple of years ago and tried Jenny Craig a few months ago (before the wedding) but thought it was way too expensive to keep going. The food was delicious though! Good luck to all of us!

p.s. I live on Kathryn ave. ! :)

OK, I'm in!! I've been lurking for too long. I hope that by my commitment on TUG, I will feel accountable. I have an extra 20 pounds that my body has grown comfortable with though I am not. It seems I stay at this weight regardless of different eating patterns. I'll really have to step it up. My husband doesn't think I can do it (and reminds me of this daily) so I'll need lots of support from you guys. :cheer: :cheer:

Jana

Hey Jana,
You can prove him wrong! :whoopie:
I have to admit that NutriSystem really worked for me. I really don't want to go through eating all the awful food again though so I figure I can handle a 1200 calorie diet myself, which was basically what NS was. It took me only 6 weeks to lose it too so I know it can be done!
I'm 51 so that's no easy task, ya know?
WE CAN DO THIS! :cheer:

Hi everyone.

Had my first weigh in today! DOWN 3 POUNDS!!!

I am so excited. NO diet ever works for me with my really super slug slow metabolism! So this was great news! I am still hungry all the time (so I know it's working, LOL). But I am sticking to my Jenny Craig food and menu despite all the usual summer temptations. I basically decided I am only going to eat the program's food 100% right now (plus the salads, veggies and fruits). That way, I will not be tempted at all to cheat. I don't trust myself to make the right decisions or have the right portion control otherwise.

Here is to a great week ahead! How is everyone else doing??

Katherine :cheer:

I'm not weighing yet....but I think my cravings are diminishing and I know my hunger level is abating...so it's a start.

ok - I need to join also. I did Jenny Craig years ago. It got too expensive for me - I only lasted on it a few weeks.

I think I just need to exercise more and cut out the sweets. Problem is - I don't want too.

I need to do something though - so maybe I'll join.

Oh, I need this. I have been hungry and eating everything in sight. I need to start journaling. I am life-time Weight-Watchers and am re-gaining the weight which I kept off for 8 years.

I know journaling will help.

O.K. I'm in too. Now that we're back from 5 weeks in Hawaii, I planned to return to the gym August 1st. (My membership has been frozen since April, when I went on a cruise with a girlfriend and then spent the next three weeks with my husband in San Diego and Las Vegas.) I will give up sweets, eat smaller portions and stay conscious while I chew. I will also give up wine. I'll be checking in to see how our crew is doing. Good luck, all. :cheer:

I did Weight Watchers earlier this year too. I lost about 5 pounds but then I found it hard to write everything down and I started slipping. Eventually I just stayed the same month after month so I decided to try something different. So far, the Jenny Craig program is easier since I don't have to keep track of anything and I don't have to shop for myself at all (except for fruits and veggies). BUT is really is sooooooo expensive!

It's worth it in the long run though. Think of all the health benefits of losing only 5%-10% of your weight -- lower blood pressure and cholesterol, healthier heart, more energy...

I am looking forward to week 2!

Katherine

I am going to weigh myself in the morning. I can't wait until Sunday as this is really hard for me I need to see if I am making progress. Not being able to even have an apple is tough! I was so looking forward to my lunches at Nordstrom. My office is near the mall and Nordstrom has a chicken, lime cilantro salad that is great, so my plan was to have this for lunch on a majority of my Phase I days. I ordered this on Monday and was told they are no longer making the dressing for this salad (PS- the dressing makes this salad) due to the cilantro recall. I was not even aware there was a recall on cilantro but I was told it is now included with the tomato & jalapeno recall. So I ordered the salad anyway and asked for a low sugar dressing and was told the cilantro dressing was their low sugar dressing :wall: so I had the balsamic but it just was not the same. Breakfast is still the most challenging for me I am already egged out! Do I sound carb deprived! Dinner tonight was good. I made chicken breast with a toasted pistachio crust with melted gorgonzola and very lightly steamed broccoli with smart balance followed by a sugar free ice cream bar. OK enough ranting ;) time for bed. I'll check in tomorrow.

Ok, I am in.

Well, I am in starting on Monday. You can't start a diet on the weekend. :D

I have been trying to stay on task with my diet for a few weeks now. I managed two weeks and this week have slipped back to my usual ways.

I am having two problems. First of all, I really just don't want to diet! I totally resent it, even though I sorely need it.

Second, I have so much weight to lose it is kind of daunting.

I have done WW in the past and it works well, if you can do it. I did find the constant planning of every meal way too much work. If someone would just do the work for me, I could do it. Sigh.

I have been so tempted to do the Jenny Craig thing myself. Just how expensive is it? I know I would do a lot better if I could have everything planned out for me.

Hi Cindi,
Well, I just tried J.C. a few months ago with our daughter's wedding looming in front of me. It most likely would have worked, but if you buy all the food they suggest it runs about $500 a month. Plus, you have to go get it yourself every week and find room in your freezer for it. I found Nutri System worked the best for me, last year, when I lost 20 lbs. in 6 weeks! Most of the food is awful though, but the convenience was fantastic! NO thinking about what you're going to eat because it's all right there.
Anyway, no, I didn't lose the weight for my daughter's wedding! I'm now looking at the pictures and thinking, "Bummer, I look plump." :(
If I didn't have the will power for that, something must be wrong! Oh well, too late now... We're going on a cruise at the end of next month and I don't want to get any plumper so I'm bound and determined now. I started watching calories, drinking more water and also giving up wine  , on Tuesday. So far, so good! :)
We can do this! :cheer:

I am on Day 5 of my diet - maybe this will help us all - listening and congratulating other "losers"!!

Hi Cindy and all,

Unfortunately Elena is right. To sign up for JC is always really cheap ($20 for 3 months or free for 1 month or whatever their special is). BUT, the food is pricy. I am paying about $100 a week and I don't buy their recommended vitamins (I get my own at costco). They told me that this is the same as buying food for myself when I am not on a diet but it really isn't true. I would say I spend about $50 a week on food for myself normally (I don't eat much) so the other $50 is my "fee" for being in JC. Plus, I still have to cook the food for my family since they don't need to diet at all. So the savings is a bit of a sales pitch.

But it really is sooooooo easy. I just open the freezer or pantry and everything I need is right there. I love it. No counting calories, no writing stuff down, nothing.

Ladycody, my hunger is less now too. I was STARVING the first week.

Catherine -- hang in there! I didn't know cilantro was recalled. I didn't even know Nordstrom's served food! LOL. Shows you how much I get out. I know amazon.com never has good salads. ;)

Mimi -- I gave up the wine. It was easy. I don't even miss it. Now I do miss a big serving of french fries like crazy though!

OK I weighed myself this morning and am down 4 lbs:banana: Not too bad since my Monday start. I still can't wait until Phase II kicks in! To be able to have a small amount of fruit and whole grain bread will be delightful. In researching South Beach on the web I have found a natural sweetener that I can use with Phase II. It is agave nectar and it has a very low glycemic index compared with sugar or honey. Sugar was around 85 honey around 60 and agave nectar is 15! We have not gone out to eat since this started and boy am I going to miss my oat bran pancakes with strawberries this weekend :bawl: My son's 10th birthday is tomorrow and we are having everyone over for a BBQ so I will be very busy which keeps me from thinking about bread. Hang in there everybody! :cheer:

cvmar...I'm basically following Atkins...and is very similar to SB but works better for me since it allows a bit less freedom with carbs (and I'm definitely an addict that needs to be strict with myself...even at goal.)

For those who need/want to track what you eat...FitDay.com has a great free program that will monitor your progress (based on your desired goal) track your food intake (calories, protein, fats, carbs, fiber)...it will figure out your bmr and will help you figure out what you're burning in calories daily. It does take a bit of work at first to get your customized foods set-up...but once you have that done...using it is a breeze. It's well worth figuring out. I hadnt used it in 3 or 4 years...but all my foods/excercises etc were still there and just waiting for me to start entering info again.

They say you need to burn 3500 calories more than you ingest in order to lose a pound. Fitday kinda lets you know how you're doing in that regard (and frankly...I personally need to excercise more....)

It's been awhile since my last posting (Challenge Week 2, I believe) ... sorry! It's wonderful and inspiring to hear you're down, Katherine--go, girl! For myself, it's been too crazy to focus on being deliberate and conscious. I NEED to be mindful and take up the reins again. Also, the journaling is very important. I've been avoiding that. Sometimes I think I'm my own worst enemy ... why am I not making this lifestyle change a priority? I'm 51, and over the last 10 months I can literally feel my body's muscle turning to fat! I need to lose 40#, but would be very happy to succeed at half of that. Thanks for listening ... you folks need to give me a kick in the pants!

Checked out Fitday.com. Thanks for the suggestion!

I am otherwise doing well. Sticking to JC 100% and it is working well. I am down another 1/2 pound from last Friday and my weigh in day is not for another 3 days so I am hoping it keeps going down. I feel good and not nearly as hungry as in the first week. I think it is going to be time for me to pick up the exercise now -- I fear that my metabolism will slow even more otherwise and I won't be able to lose much more weight.

I placed another 2 week order with JC so I am going to keep going. I think my plan is paid for 6 weeks so I figured I should stick to it completely for that time. At 2 pounds a week, it will help me get 12 pounds off, which is about what I need anyway. Soooooo, I drove by Starbucks 3 times today for various errands and managed to not stop all 3 times! Talk about willpower.

How are you all doing? How was the weekend?

Katherine

I am down 5 lbs. for the week. However I did not last 2 weeks on Phase 1 of South Beach  I just could not do another breakfast with eggs. I broke down and had 1/2 whole wheat bagel with low fat cream cheese and sliced strawberries and a cup of coffee for breakfast on Sunday. I still do lunch and dinner per Phase 1 but breakfast it out! I have been a much happier person to be around since Sunday :D My DH and I joined the new Gold's Gym which is only about a mile away and it is really nice. Today I did 30 minutes on the treadmill. I plan to do 30 minutes 5 days a week with some very light weight lifting (biceps and triceps) 2-3 times a week. Our plan is to make this more of a lifestyle change than a diet. On Sunday I am planning on making our usual spaghetti dinner but with whole wheat pasta and we will skip the garlic bread.
Time will tell........
