sorry for the up and down folks, forums were/are suffering from a DDOS attack.

support has implemented some firewall rate limits to keep things stable, but it may cause some timeouts moving forward until all this passes by.

apologies for the inconvenience. this week sure continues to provide an endless supply of "fun"

Probably a scammer trying to get revenge for ruining their business.
Either that or hacked-off sales person who lost some sales because of TUG. That's the most likely motive for someone to go the effort to do a DDOS attack.

For the benefit of techno-clueless folks like me, what exactly does DDOS mean or stand for and what is the nature of a "DDOS attack"? 🤔

Distributed Denial of Service attack.

A basic Denial of Service attack is like a robo spammer who keeps calling your phone number in. Since your line is always busy nobody else can call you.

With A DDOS the attacker either uses amplification techniques and/or a botnet to overload a server from multiple sources. Now with multiple robo dialers modern convivences like call-waiting get overwhelmed and people really can't get through to you.

Solution include temporarily renting more phone lines (increasing server capacity) and/or auto-blocking numbers after X calls (firewall rate limits).

Why am I receiving this message code 403 sometimes with DuckDuck.com ..I do not have permission to access this website ?

im not sure? you getting it trying to access tug?

are you using an overseas/international vpn by chance?

im not terribly familiar with that browser so i have no idea why it would generate those errors trying to browse TUG.

on top of that tugbbs.com and tug2.com are hosted on two completely separate servers, so even if one was having some sort of configuration error its highly unlikely the other would.

TUGBRIAN, thanks for all your suggestions and advice.

Every now and then, over the past few weeks, I see this message. It repeats itself when I try to reload the page but within a minute or so I am good to go again.

I have had this also over the same time frame.
Same here. Actually came over here specifically to research this issue. I'm using Safari and while I sometimes use a VPN, I havent' during this time frame for TUG. Using Safari on a Mac. Sometimes I can reload and access the forum, sometimes I have to quite the browser and then open again. It's been going on 2-3 weeks I believe.

yep, ive been working with liquidweb to figure out the cause of this and they appear to have a solution to implement tonight.

we shall see! its so unbelievably sporadic and "unrepeatable" its made it very challenging to track down.

What is really strange about this attack it so sporadic and it does not repeat the forbidden message every day.

I've seen the same "Forbidden" error the past week or so on occasion - not real often - but enough to mention it. Sporadic errors like this are always a PITA to troubleshoot/repro so if there's anything we can do to help let us know for sure.

they claim to have implemented the fix early this morning, so please let me know if anyone is still seeing the 403/Forbidden error starting today!

174.228.164.230 from my Verizon MVNO hotspot. I've had the issue from my home, at a fast food restaurant and my hotspot. So far the only one today was the hotspot.

TUGBrian, observation it appears that this message hit some heavy TUG posters on this website. I maybe wrong.

yea I have no idea...Ive seen it exacly once and im on here all day every day for the most part.
