i at an impasse. It says WiFi not set up, for help go to your Alexa ap. I go to the ap and there is no way to set up WiFi, it tries to get me to install a phon3 service. How do I install WiFi on the echo dot. Perhaps I have installed the wrong app.

There is an Alexa app. Called “Amazon Alexa” First step is to open app, follow directions to set your phones wifi to the echo dot network. Then your phone can communicate with the echo dot and you can enter your local WiFi settings.

So make sure you go to your phones WiFi settings to change the network to the dot’s own WiFi SSID.

Would the Alexa app be incompatible with an iPhone? I am getting an incompatible message

It was the incorrect app, and finally the correct app appeared

Now I have to work on Tile

I have it on my IPHONE SE and on my HP Laptop.

In a few days, we will be a four Dot family.
The two we had responded simultaneously when we said "Alexa,"
so we changed one's name to "Echo."

Are you concerned about privacy. I would never put a google home product in my home for privacy reasons. Same reason I do not have a goggle log in or gmail account. My daughter gave me a dot for Christmas. I hooked it up to see how it worked. I like the idea of a smart home but not sure I want Amazon having that much data on me. Is there a smart home set up that does not share data with Amazon, Google , or Facebook.

You may choose one of four names. Hopefully they’ll extend that to be user definable in future. I’ve got three...each with it’s own name.

Smart home is not the same as an Echo, though they work together. Samsung and Apple make smart home devices, as do many other companies. It all depends on what you want to accomplish.

In regards to privacy...IMO, that ship sailed years ago and we all lost.

I have an echo in the bedroom, a tap in the kitchen and a dot in the bathroom. They are separated enough that they usually do not pick up requests in the other rooms. I still call them all Alexa, just so I do not get confused.

I use my Tap when I travel with as it includes a battery and will run for about 8 hrs on a full charge.

I have plugs, lights, switches and a thermostat that are all linked up via Voice Comments on Alexa. You can link all of these smart items via your Alexa app.

FWIW, I find the most useful of all the “smart” devices connected in my home is the Logitech remote. I’ve had the Nest thermostat for years, along with Philips Hue lights and the original SmartThings units (including moisture detectors), but the TV remote is the one I use most often. It’s nice to simply tell Alexa (in whichever room I’m in) to turn on HBO in the living room, and by the time I’m there it’s on, the stereo is set correctly, and ready to watch.

When I ask Alexa to "announce it's time to go, she plays
a sound effect & my voice over all the dots in the house.
It's erie. My voice echoes throughout the house.

Are you using the Harmony hub

Are you using the Harmony hub

Yes. I bought the Logitech Harmony Ultimate Home at Costco when it was discontinued and inexpensive. Great buy. Now that Logitech is selling the Hub separately for a very reasonable amount (which you may use with your phone to setup and Alexa to control), it's a worthwhile addition to almost any home.

I bought the hub without the remote and it works well with the mobile app but the Alexa integration is not good. Alexa cant do 1/2 the stuff you can do with the app. Did you have trouble getting Alexa to work ? I am considering returning the hub only and getting the combo with the physical remote.

I'm sure it's just me, but I find this question rhetorical, funny, and somewhat revealing.

You're asking for help to establish set up of a device that is supposed to provide help with simple tasks? Such a pity you can't simply ask your device for help?

Upon completion, enjoy your new voyeur.

Carry on..

Again, why not a classic book, and do a bit of reading? I suggest 1984 by George Orwell. A classic, and should be required reading for every citizen. Shucks, can't be a bad read if David Bowie wrote a song about it right?

What are you trying to do? I only have it start my devices, change channels, volume, etc. It does all of that fantastically well. I use the included remote only for volume change since it’s faster and programming needs, but that’s quite rare.

Perhaps it’s time for another glass of wine? :)

And if 1984 isn't scary enough watch The Minority Report.
