Travel and Leisure

Anyone else finding the pitch stronger than usual? We are supposably on the 'do not tour' list and yet.... we are being pressured to attend. Say no - they call on your cell and tell you you are scheduled at such and such a time for this 'must attend' owner update. New sales management or ???? And yes, they are using the Travel and Leisure BS, new website coming, etc.... all the lies we're hearing about.

As is often the case the sales and marketing team employs half truths using deceptive language. There is actually a “linking your account” with T&L via TravelUp - which typically requires a developer purchase. TravelUp is basically just another Experian or Travelocity type website with no better pricing than any of the other travel websites out there, exception being for Wyndham hotels, which really aren’t worth staying in to begin with since most of the brands are discount brands that aren’t well maintained IME. There were rumors several months go that TravelUp is now available without a purchase, but when attempting to access the website it failed, but I haven’t tried to access it recently. I will have to dig up that link and try again.

Oddly enough, my Club Wyndham account has been linked with T&L via TravelUp for several years now without a developer purchase. In addition, just the other day I got an email notifying me that one of my WorldMark accounts was linked the same way. Whenever I've looked the prices for flights, etc., have been about the same as what I could get through Orbitz or Google flights at best, at worst a lot worse. There ain't no FOMO fo me as far as the linkage to T&L goes - Wyndham bought a new name, big whoop. It's not like they are pointing to anything that is actually of value....

Was not worried about being part of T&L. Just him saying might not be able use points the same as before. Like I said, I advised him I would take the risk. I did hours and hours of research so was prepared to say no. Can’t imagine those who are not as informed and then buying more to avoid losing access.

They seem to call more often and even on the cell phone. The last trip to Ocean Walk it was extremely annoying. I normally do them just to get the free money but this time I just couldn't and after the third day I was over it.

I wouldn't say that they made up any more idiotic excuses on WHY I should attend, and definitely if they just told me I had to attend, I would probably engage them in a negative way. I'm not playing those games...

But they don't do that, because i'm a priority owner :cheer:

Can anyone give me a good way to tell them no at the sales desk? I am very non-confrontational and I dread it so much. The last time they kept telling me I had to go. I just keep saying no thank you until I have to just walk away.

Walking away is sometimes what you need to do. In fact, there is rarely a need to actually go to that desk. Sure they might have wristbands, but they give you room key cards at the checkin desk. You can bypass the desk altogether. Though you may have someone chase you out the door like they did to me at Grand Desert.

Yes. I tried that once and they chased me to my car.

When i'm not in the mood for their BS, I give them two opportunities politely while saying i'm not interested, if they still persist, I firmly tell them something to the effect of "I don't care what you say, i'm not meeting with you, give me my wristband right now"

If they still persist after that, I ramp up the profanity, get loud, make a scene, that's the last thing they want. Especially if there are other "victims" around the room.

This always does the trick.

Buy a TUG t-shirt and wear it when checking in. That’s my plan, my theory being it’s a way to let them know I’m an educated TS owner, so I can be polite when I turn them down.

The other part of the plan is not to allow DH to visit the desk with me. He’s a lot more susceptible to offers of gift cards in exchange for wasting our time.

It is nice to know I'm not the only one to get chased to my car at Grand Desert : ) I'm a huge fan of wristbands. I reuse my wristbands. The check in person will program them for me without the need to go to the "wristband" desk. Once they are stretched out, on the next visit, I make a grudging trip to the wristband team and tell them I need 8 wristbands. There are usually 2-3 of us staying. This way I get extras and those 8 last quite a while. I've not been to a resort yet that sells the sturdier bracelet style. Oh, yes, I was on the "do not gift" DNG list. (DANGER they say). Something changed recently so I've had to start wristband saving technique.

One of Grand Desert's recent ploys was "you have to go to SECURITY". That gave it a "required" feel. I heard them saying that over and over while I waited to check in on a busy day.

Regarding the wristbands, I always bring old wristbands with me just in case of some shenanigans like this, or if checking in after hours.

Until recently most resorts check in desk would just program the wristbands for you. But I think the wristband police caught onto this and a lot (most?) resorts now have some sort of policy where the check in desk won't do this. Even after hours.

So... the workaround to this is just check in, go to your room, then at some point later, go back to the front desk and tell them "my wristbands are not working". I have yet to have them not fix them for me. In fact some resorts will send someone up to your room to get them for you.

Tell them you will attend for a non-negotiable gift offering of $500 in cash, visa, MasterCard, or American Express gift card. Also add the offer must be in writing.

Atlanta actually wanted us to pay to attend a presentation. I've started to negotiate harder for better incentives after the cheapskates in Nashville only ponied up 25K Wyndham Reward (WR) points. We told Atlanta that we wanted them to match Emerald Grand's offer of 40K WR + $200 Margaritaville vouchers. They said the best they could do was 17K WR and nothing more. I wasn't budging. The rep made a phone call and said they could give us 40K WR IF we paid them $100. Uhhh, NO!

In their initial offer they said since we had already done an update in Nashville we didn't need to do another one so they offered us one night of valet +$50 in Margaritaville vouchers. I assumed it was just a free gift with no strings but I was told that we still had to go to get our WR account linked up. No presentation since we had already done one. Yeah, right, whatever. We passed and will try and press them for more, because I know they will ask, when we get to Myrtle Beach.

Yes, we do the same thing - we have about 30 wristbands we've collected over the years now - so we always bring our own - and ask the front desk to program them. They did so for a while, but as you said, they've caught onto this workaround and now won't do so upon check-in for the most part - though that doesn't keep us from continuing to ask since sometimes they will still do so even today. Some resorts also now only use wristbands and no longer provide the key cards, so your idea of bypassing the concierge desk and going to your room doesn't work if key cards are no longer available.

I recall Margaritaville Nashville that we were given the wristbands by the front desk staff. We still were ushered over to the "concierge" for them to rope us into an "update."

Yeah I've never been to MVC Nashville, but for the MVC St. Thomas and Rio Mar resorts, they use the MVC "watches" - typically some kind of bright green or other bright color, and they give those out when checking in - and then direct you toward the concierge desk. We have on occasion simply skipped the concierge desk after getting our key cards, and we simply forgo using wristbands altogether, we just walk out of the check-in area and ignore any pleas otherwise from the concierge desk area, but then we miss out on some coupons at certain resorts and we do like to save monies, so we end up enduring the concierge desk process just to get our coupons for local restaurants. Some resorts have arrangements where you simply go to the restaurant and provide proof of Wyndham ownership via the key card or wristband, and that gets you the discount, others actually provide coupons that you need to have to get the discount though.

Welp, they called us this morning in our room to ask us to attend a presentation with 15 minutes notice. They did say we had 10 minutes grace period. After may offers, they were still lackluster so I declined and finally just had to hang up. Low and behold they called back in about five minutes and gave us something that was worth the promised 60 minutes that really turned into about 75. I've heard the stories about how relentless Wyndham is to get you to attend, but never experienced anything like this. I'll deal with it though, as long as we get something worthy of our time. I wonder if they will ask us again when we get to Myrtle Beach.

They absolutely will. Ocean Blvd is relentless. Last time I was there they kept calling me and I got tired of them calling so I straight up told them I would only do it if it was just me, not the wife. The wristband desk apparently didn't clear it with anyone, so the "update" turned into 30 minutes of them harassing me about where my wife was. Including them allegedly looking at her wristband access logs. I got my $125 Amex before we started and ended up walking out after 30 minutes. I told them I was looking to buy more resale points at some point too which pissed them off.

Did they bring up T&L again and how 95% of owners already signed up

We'll be at SeaWatch.

I don't know what the guy was trying to tell me on the phone. Something about some emails I should have got last year that I needed to take action on. Perhaps it had something to do with T&L, maybe not. I think we've heard everything possible, but I am sure something new will come along.
