Art - I'm jealous and you're making me homesick. We won't be back this year until October.
Isn't October late in the year for you? The only time we've been here at the same time was in August, 2021.

Yes it is late for us. We normally go in August, and DD and her family join us. This year they can't do the summer. Also, we expect that DW will retire this year when her contract is up at the end of August.

Good way to celebrate retirement! This is the first trip for my SIL since she retired from teaching 5th grade. We usually come in the winter and it was too far to fly here from Delaware for what would have to be a short trip.

We started doing August regularly only because that aligned with DW's work schedule. We would have preferred to go to Hawaii sometime other than summer, because that is the nicest time of year in Seattle. So if she retires we start traveling at other times.

First there was one, now there are two. Inside the Great Wall of Poipu (Makahū‛ena Estates) there are now two houses under construction, both next to the entrance. Construction of the first one started in August 2021. It's still not done yet! Nothing happens fast in Hawaii except changes in the weather.

Speaking of weather, do you want to make a bold prediction for your weather today?

I love the koi pond at Point at Poipu. They did such a great job of making it flow perfectly. Rick is going to have to do some math to get our pond's stream flowing slowly like that. I don't know what else we would do with the slope in our yard, but his old stream flowed way too fast. Maybe he needs a smaller pump for the water as well. That is an engineering marvel at Point at Poipu. I wonder if they ever have to fix it, or if it's always perfectly flowing like that.

Partly cloudy with a chance of rain. That's as good a forecast as you can do any day here.

Is this the resort directly next to the Hyatt?

I just took a picture from the lanai. The building on the left is the Point at Poipu. The building in the middle is the Hyatt. We're on the 2nd floor so we're not high enough to see the Hyatt's beach. As you can see from the picture, it's partly cloudy.

We will have our first stay there in October. I have sent my DB and my DS each for a week. DS was on his honeymoon and they gave him an oceanfront unit.

I usually stay either in Lihue/Kapaa or Princeville so this will be our first time staying on the south shore. We will try and hit art night in Hanapepe.

Any other must do's on the southside?

  • So far, we've had dinner at Keoki's Paradise $$$$, Tidepools $$$$$, and Volcano Pizza $. I'd recommend any one of them.
  • Don't miss spouting horn. I can't remember ever being there when it wasn't spouting. It's also a great place to watch sunsets and chickens. Unfortunately, the flea market still isn't open.
  • The rock wall across from the east end of Poipu Beach Park is where the sunset groupies gather. If there's a green flash, they all cheer.
  • For groceries, Big Save is convenient, but claustrophobic. I'd rather go to Lihue and use my Safeway discount card.
  • For hiking, the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail isn't difficult and has excellent views from the cliffs along the ocean.
  • Check any restaurant or store for hours. Most businesses here have an unusual shortage of workers.

I'm not a big fan of Kauai Coffee, but I did have fun taking some pictures outside their visitors center.

For a pump that is flowing too fast, you can either "throttle down" the pump by restricting the output, or bleed off the extra output by putting in a tee and "dumping" the excess at the pump. Both work. I think that the latter uses less energy/watts.

I would add:

Waimea Canyon
Allerton Botanical Garden

I've been to Waimea canyon and the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail many times.
Allerton Botanical Garden is definitely on my list. Also want to go to a chocolate tour and I think there is a Monastery that I remember Denise talking about.

We enjoyed this tour last March on Kauai:

Watch the times as they only had mornings available when we were there. Very good chocolate & they use their beans in the chocolate rum on another tour we took.

The Hindu monastery is up the Wailua River past the Fern Grotto. Beautiful, lush, and unlike anything else on Kauai.

The flea market building at the Spouting Horn still hasn't open, but if you want locally produced jewelry, artwork, and food, check out the Warehouse 3540.

Plenty of green sea turtles at the Poipu Beach Park. At times, people have seen over 30 of them.

We've had days with some rain, and some days with sun, but today we had both so I got my first rainbow picture of this trip. If you click on it, you'll see that it's a double rainbow.
