Arrived late last night check in got a good night's sleep. Woke up started driving around up-and-down the strip. Searching for a place to eat breakfast and taking in the sites. We ended up passing the pawn star's pawn shop. Stopped in For a quick look and selfie. Settle in into this joint called Lou Diner for Breakfast. Highly recommended.

Every time I've driven past the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop there was a line to get in. Was it as interesting as it seemed it might be?

Honestly I would not have chosen to make it into the store had it not been the following from the history Channel show. As you know its in a out of center location. Without the fanfare I don't think it would be in business. There was no line as it was rather early morning.
Would not normally have looked in pawn shops.

I thought the show on TV was a brilliant marketing opportunity. I can't think of the name of any other Pawn Shops anywhere, so this one has brand recognition. I've been told the "stars" are rarely in the shop these days, so it's a hit or miss thing when people visit. One of these days I'll stop and go inside.

I'll be the contrarian. Don't eat breakfast in Las Vegas. Wait until the restaurants open for lunch and have an early lunch instead.

I haven't had a single breakfast in Las Vegas where I said, "Wow! This was so worth it!" Mostly it's perfunctory eats that fills a void. But if you're the first person in the door for the lunch menu, you can get something amazing for the same price.

I'd rather eat a fast-food breakfast sandwich (and I never eat fast food) to tide me over until the lunch menu is available.

EDIT -- or find a 24-hour taco joint (you can throw a dime and hit one in Las Vegas). Las Vegas has amazing 24-hour taco joints. Breakfast? No thanks -- your choices are "cheap and bad, cheap and mediocre, expensive and bad, expensive and mediocre, and way-too-expensive for half-way decent."

We met the museum guy who looks like a Quaker - Mark Hall-Patton - in a bar in Boulder City a few years ago, at a wake for a biker friend of his. Perfectly nice man, and we had a nice conversation.

Rick opened a BBQ restaurant right near the store, we’ll try that if we ever visit the pawn shop. My friend stood in line at Famous Amos cookies in LA in the late ‘70s and bought/had signed a book Andy Warhol had just published. Pawn Stars weren’t interested in her book because of the personalization. I sold my book, also with my name in the autograph, on eBay several years later for $500.

I'm not really a big breakfast person other than coffee and a snack. The last fun breakfast I had in Vegas was at around 3:30 am in my 40's. I'm not certain exactly where we were but I had a burger, fries and Crown and no complaints. We did eventually make it back to the WM before the sun came up. Good times with good friends.

Do you like a big breakfast? No, I mean do you have a HUGE appetite? Enormous?

Try Hash House A Go Go. When I posted breakfast pictures from there of me, DW, and FIL, our niece (FIL's grandkid) commented "that's enough food for a small country!" I replied "Yeah, or more". And it's good food. A bit pricey for breakfast, until you consider the quantity. We were staying in a timeshare, and got 3 breakfasts out of it.

After breakfast and a stop at Walmart for some provisions we made it to the National Atomic Museum.

Tomorrow it's back to work at the Venitan for Oracle Cloud World. Maybe I will run into Larry Ellison?

There must be another techie here in TUG world at the Oracle Conference this week?

Bouchon at the Venetian is worth going to. Hard to find. Lousy owner. Great food. I can live with the lousy owner part. (He really is a total ass. There's not enough money to get me to work for him.) But you should try it if you can. He's one of the best French chefs on the planet. And that annoys the French because he's an American. Reasonable prices considering what you're getting. The mussels frites is to freakin' die for. And if they're running a fried chicken special, get that -- it's the second best fried chicken on the planet.

EDIT -- And make sure you hit Rao's at Caesar's. Thank me later.

I've also heard that you can't actually see Rick, Cory, or "Chumlee" at the Pawnstars pawn shop. They are now reality TV entertainers

The have 11 locations, mostly on the coasts. One opened in Texas near me in 2016, and closed in 2019 before I got around to visiting.

I was going to ask if he saw Rick, Cory, or "Chumlee". The Pawn shop is not in a great location. That area of the Strip is uncomfortable.

That's a shame. I have to return there when coffee harvest is over and pack a shipping container. The best thing about Strip fine dining is that if the guest can keep the alcohol tab to a minimum, prices are quite good. Yes, there will be the person who demands that $85 for a steak is way too much. But they sourced that beef from Japan, and have the nose-print to prove it. (Ask to see it if they're offering Kobe beef.) Hofbrauhaus has sausages and beer flown over from Germany. Costa di Mare (closed) flew in seafood from Italy.

Rao's is a real pity, because now it's impossible to get a table. The one in New York is only for the most well connected people on Earth. Mere mortals cannot book a table. They're sold out in perpetuity.

There are only a handful of places I want to revisit when I return to pack. The only place I wanted on the strip is also closed -- Sterling Brunch. That's another cryin' shame. There was no place like it on earth.

Been walking all this past week while attending the conference between the Venetian and Caesars Forum. Must have been clocking 5 miles per day.
Had dinner at Nine Fine Irish Fisherman, Emeril, Orchids Garden, Favorite Bistro, Lotus of Siam!
So far Orchids Garden and Lotus come out as winners. Emeril was good but pricey for the experience.

Saw Katy Perry last night! She put on an Amazing show! Tonight it's John Legend!

Just a general comment about Vegas. It's one giant mix of Times Square/Broadway, Orlando with a high dose of steroids. Truly dazzling. Been around long enough to have a cultural history for sure!
