Super Bowl Saturday ?

I don't care ... when, where or what professional sport is playing. They are entertainment and many sports are a stage for betting (most of which is illegal unless in Vegas).

As for Sunday being GAME DAY ... it is the day of the week most people do not go to a job.

Change of subject who is going to win the Big Game Sunday?

Sports betting has a strong chance of being legalized this year, which is certainly going to bring a new dynamic to our country.

For the past 50 years the SB has been 6:30pm EST...Reason being: Audience throughout USA..I'm sure "youth activities" can delay/miss one day....Most youths will be watching SB on Saturday or Sunday anyway.....I can see u are not a true fan of NFL...I'm a die-hard
Please cite source of your assertion that most youths watch SB. Perhaps in your world but I don't recall our family making any big woo over it and we liked football. Just not a priority. Watched if we were home and it was on but no special arrangements.

I don't think it's up to you to decide who is or is not a fan of NFL and will stop short of asking what a "true fan" is.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned religion as a reason the game might be Sunday rather than Saturday. Two group of religious people do not “work” on Saturdays: Seventh Day Adventists and Jewish people. While most Christians worship on Sundays, they are usually available to play in or watch sports on Sunday afternoon without religious issues.

Its all about tv ratings!...I do think the NFL is onto something with an 18 game schedule- that would push the Super Bowl back by 2 weeks every year...

The Canadian Football League (CFL) did that back in the 80's. It went from 4 pre-season games and 16 regular-season games to two pre-season games and 18 regular season games. Apparently the players liked that seeing that they would have to put their bodies through the rigours of two fewer meaningless games and two more meaningful games.

Nope, not kidding. There's a reason that sports generally don't infringe on other sports. Colleges don't play football on Friday nights and pros don't play on Saturday (there are a few exceptions, but very few).

Game's over by 8:00. If one can't recover in 12 hours, they're probably such a lightweight they shouldn't be drinking...

Bad idea since there's no compelling reason to change. Certainly none promoted in this thread.
The game is overly 8? I suppose if you are on PST. Maybe, but that's not most of us.
By the way, there was talk this past season of colleges playing on Friday nights. They would like to! However, there was a huge outcry from high schools and taking away from their games.

For the past 50 years? The game has started at 6:30 EST? I really recall it starting earlier in the '80's.

More of the country doesn't watch the Superbowl than does watch it. I realize it is an extremely large event and I am a fan but it it is still only a game and it's hard to start moving it around to convenience some. I think they have done evaluations on it and i'm sure there reasons why they stuck with Sunday.

The networks have determined through extensive research what days and what hours are best for broadcasting the Super Bowl so they can generate the most ad revenue. Has nothing to do with watching the football game. It’s all about getting us to buy what their advertisers are selling. I can guarantee you that if they could get more ad revenue by scheduling the game to start at midnight that they would negotiate with the NFL to make it happen.

For me the game is more about the commercials anyway. In most cases the game is anticlimactic and in many cases boring.

Personally, I really don't care when it is. But, if I had my choice I would take Saturday.

Now....here is something to think about. I would be willing to wager that there are far less impaired drivers making their way home on a Sunday night than on a Saturday night. There are a good amount of responsible people that don't have their next drink because they know they need to go to work in the morning.

If no one is watching the game the advertisers wouldn't be charged so much for the commercials. So It does have to do with people watching the game. Of course the advertisers want to sell their product and the NFL wants the most viewers so they can get more money too and all that starts with people watching the game.

Yes, I was going to mention this also. I think there's influence to keep major events away from Friday and Saturday nights. Super Bowl, CFP championship, NCAA hoops finals, Grammy's...major events people gather for, and are inclined to drink during, are not on Friday or Saturday nights, and I believe that drunk driving plays a part in that.

As an avid Eagles fan I sure do hope they win. Philly deserves one. Contrary to rep they are the best most loyal fans around. The boo birds never descended on anyone that did not deserve it.

The superbowl is great for business. Especially in this area. I am active in the local beer community and a few friends that own small breweries will have an excellent Sunday. Usually that is dead time. A lot of local restaurants are making big deals of it and will make a lot of money. The superbowl is a great social event and Sunday is just fine.

I like the Saturday idea also. Whether you drink too much or not, its a late night for many and there have been plenty of studies about reduced productivity on the Monday after. I see no good reason why is must be on Sunday.

The Patriots get a dilly dilly.

The Eagles get a Philly Philly.

I'm going with dilly dilly.

It’s always been High School football on Fridays, College football on Saturdays and Pro Football on Sundays. Since college football is over by this time of year that eliminates the overlap BUT, college basketball is now in full swing and I would hate to see anything distract from their show.

The NFL has already taken over Monday and Thursday nights so m a fan of keeping it right where it is. The game will probably be over by 9:30pm EST or 6:30pm PST. Plenty of time for people to sober up before going back to work on Monday!

A Superbowl in under 3 hours?

Ok, all you East coast lightweights, game's over. Now go to bed, get your 8 hours and easily make it to work by 8 AM.

Well, they beat the spread again as underdogs.

One big question I have, at least about the broadcast, could Cris Collingsworth have sounded any more pro-Eagles? :ponder:

Another question although not having a big bearing on the game. Does anybody know why the Patriots chose to wear the white jerseys? As the "home" team (the AFC champion is the "home" team in even-numbered Super Bowls), they get to choose and usually choose the home colours. I know there have been a few times where the "home" team chose the road white jerseys. Was it perhaps the Pats won their last two SBs wearing the white jerseys and the last two times they lost, they wore the home coloured jerseys?

I can think of at least three other occasions where the "home" team chose to wear the white road jerseys:

Super Bowl 50 Denver vs. Carolina, SB40 Pittsburgh vs. Seattle, and SB 27 Dallas vs. Buffalo.

[C]ould Cris Collingsworth have sounded any more pro-Eagles?...

So?... Actually, I don't think so.
But I do think Tom Brady must be feeling a little deflated.

The opposite, actually. Were you not watching as Collingsworth whined on and on and on, arguing Ertz's TD catch should be overturned? He caught the ball on the 5 yard line, took 3 large steps, then had the defender trip him up and he maintained position of the ball until it broke the plane. It was about as clear of a TD that could be, but Collingsworthless kept on insisting the play should be overturned. He was doting on the Patriots for most of the game; made me sick to listen to him.

Yeah, that's my take as well. I thought Collinsworth's comments were highly pro New England. Even embarrassingly so, at points.
