I won't say that I found the game boring, but I wasn't enthralled either. You would like to see quality football and yes the defenses did perform, but at the same time ...

  • The number of illegal procedure penalties...
  • The number of taunting and personal foul penalties...
  • The three longest plays of the game (if memory serves me right) involved two long passes thrown up for grabs into double coverage and a team confused on a punt about whether the person had called a fair catch. (Should never happen, but that is my point... poor football.)
  • The two interceptions were thrown right into the hands of the defender... one of which was a real lollypop throw.
None of that was football at its best.

On a different topic, one or two players with concussions (not sure if the second one going through the protocol was declared to have one) ... just not sure how long football can continue. Ken Stabler got a lot of publicity, but Fred McNeil from the Vikings was also found to have severe brain damage. Since then, players have gotten even bigger and faster.

Newton's true character came out during and after this game. I said earlier how I hate is antics when he does good things, now we see him when bad things happen.

I thought the post game showed said it all when every guy up there praised Manning, not for his talent or his play but the way he always conducts himself on and off the field with nothing but class. Of course Newton could not even be mentioned in that conversation.

I kept yelling into the TV after he failed to dive for his own fumble, "Hey, the real Superman would have dove in there."

I enjoy the games much more when the players who male great plays act like they've been there before.

I'm sure that slice of humble pie that the Broncs served up didn't taste too good. Post game proved that. Broncos shut down arguably the best HOF quarterback in football a few weeks prior. Once they did that there was no way they were going to let Newton have his way like weeks past. Newton will be back because he has some awesome talent and not everybody can play defense like we saw the Broncos play.

Much was made in the post-game of the fact that Gary Kubiak is the first in NFL history to win a Super Bowl as head coach of a team for which he also once played.

After Googling for more details, I was surprised to learn that Kubiak played his entire career for the Broncos. Drafted in 1983, he was mostly the backup QB to his current boss, John Elway. Who knew? (...I sure didn't).

Google is your friend. That "fact" is not true.

The first to win the Super Bowl as a head coach for the same team he played for was Oakland Raiders legend Tom Flores. Flores quarterbacked the Raiders for six seasons, before coaching them to victory in Super Bowls XV and XVII. Mike Ditka led the Chicago Bears to a win in Super Bowl XX, 20 years after his stint as a Bears tight end.

What is true: Kubiak is the first head coach to win a Super Bowl with the same team he went to the Super Bowl with as a player. Kubiak was on the roster for the Broncos defeats in Super Bowls XXI, XXII, and XXIV, throwing seven passes total in those three games.

Source: http://deadspin.com/gary-kubiak-was-actually-the-third-person-to-win-the-su-1757718771

If you want to know how he performed in the three Super Bowl losses:
Year - SB - Cmp - Att -Yds - TD
1986 XXI .... 4 .... 4 ... 48 ... 0
1987 XXII ... 0 .... 0 .... 0 .... 0
1989 XXIV ... 1 ... 3 ... 28 .... 0
.

Posted my Google-result / modified post almost simultaneously with your corrective post. Thanks.
I should know better than to ever just blindly believe the talking heads on the tube anyhow.

I may not have correctly heard / understood the distinction (if indeed made on the tube) that Kubiak was the only to win a Super Bowl as Coach of the same team for which he had played in SuperBowl(s), albeit apparently without distinction. If so, that error is on me. In any case, thanks for the clarification.

Apparently, CBS got it wrong. Per Kevin Draper at deadspin.com ...

"At least twice during the Super Bowl broadcast, Jim Nantz relayed an interesting fact: With Denver’s win, head coach Gary Kubiak became the first person to ever win the Super Bowl as a head coach for the same team he played for. An interesting fact, but one that Nantz (or more likely, Nantz’s research assistant) got wrong."

Let's give a big shout out to Wade Phillips, the Broncos Defensive Coordinator who not only shut down the Patriots and Tom Brady, but also
put the whammy on that weasel, Scam "Go-Fig" Newton. :)

Wade Phillips could possibly be the most valuable entity in ALL this conversation. He received plaudits during the game but I felt many may have missed it. He was a MAJOR factor in Denver's victories, almost to the point that a replica trophy should rest on HIS mantel!!! Good job Wade.

Ive often wondered how he landed that job after leaving the dumpster fire that was the houston texans....this certainly explains it!

Super Bowl Technology Mishaps and Real Time Rescues - by Steve Wilkes/ Crunch Network/ TC/ techcrunch.com

"The Super Bowl is the crowning glory of sports in the United States, but it hasn’t been without it’s mishaps. They aren’t the last minute fumbles, missed field goals, or obvious interceptions either. They’re those unfortunate outside incidents that stopped or changed the course of the game.

In many cases, today’s real time technologies could have been applied for simple fixes to the unforeseen mishaps of modern technologies.

In 2013, there was a power outage during Super Bowl XLVII. The outage was ironically caused by a device specifically made to stop power outages. The equipment sensed an ‘abnormality’ and decided to open a breaker which cut the power to the field for 34 minutes.

Smart Grids could have saved the day..."

Couldn't agree more...Wade was with the Broncos in the late 80s /early 90s. He was a great defensive coordinator even then.

It was mentioned that Kubiak reminded, I think it was Phil Simms, that he, Kubiak, has the all time best SuperBowl completion average. 4 for 4, I love it.

Even the half time show this year was dull this year.

Once again I did not watch the half time show. I was in the middle of replacing my kitchen sink Sun so worked on that. I seldom watch them.

I did watch last year because a musician friend of mine told me Bruno Mars is a good performer. I agree but not really my kind of music.

Brewster Green (two weeks).
Panthers

Ditto.

Sorry about that, my good friends who are Carolina fans, but if it weren't for Scam Newton, I'd be with you too.
I love Thomas Davis who played for Georgia, and many other players.

But I CANNOT get over the fact that Newton (I hate to even say his name, and can't listen to or watch him) should be in a penitentiary rather than on a football field. He skated on soooo many offenses while in college, and was as deep into "it" as his Grandfather who took thousands in cash.

He has zero class and is nothing but a thug in a sweet little lamb's outfit.
And now we learn he's also a big baby.

A gazillion Kudos to Peyton Manning---what a gentleman! Glad he got the 201 wins, currently one more than Bret Favre, and now the all-time leader. He is going out on top and he's a true role model. Justice and destiny reign for one of the GOOD GUYS once more.

What a game---lots of tears :)bawl:) on the Carolina side,
but many more smiles of joy and deep satisfaction for Bronco fans. :)

You're forgiven. :)

No tears here. The better team yesterday won.

The Panthers became "my" team long before Cam Newton made an appearance. I think he behaved like a sulky brat yesterday at the press conference. He needs to grow up and show some respect.

BTW, it was Versace and there was nothing sweet about those black, white and gold pants. ;)

As Yahoo Sports writer Eric Adelson said,
"Cam Newton went from Superman to the Incredible Sulk".

Love it!

I think that pretty much sums it up. :)

I was so confident that Carolina was going to win - I gave my husband Denver +6 (I will stay away from Las Vegas for a while ). My husband reminded me that "old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance." I just wish I could forget the image of Cam Newton rolling on the ground at the end of the game.... :bawl:

Really Cam? "Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser."

I've seen many great athletes who were "good losers," and gracious in defeat. You can't win every game and those that act with class when they do lose a big game are in no way losers.

Many of Cams teammates were good losers Sunday, does that make them losers? I don't think so.

And / or maybe just grow up and at least try to act like an adult, a professional and a good sport.

I'd like to believe that someone so athletically gifted (but with few if any other life skills or other noteworthy attributes) would be eternally grateful to be paid millions of dollars to play a game, whether ultimately winning the "Big One" or not. I would apparently be quite mistaken in that particular belief...

There is no question who orchestrated the Broncos Super Bowl run. While his contribution to the team effort did not go unnoticed during the later stages of the game, I don't think he's been given the credit due in the couple of days following. Football knows though!

I don't have a dog in this fight (actually don't even care that much), but here is an article swimming against the mainstream and saying that Manning is a bigger jerk (actually the article uses a less gentile word) than Newton.

Nice try. On the jerk meter, Newton is and always will be a true all-star. His "instances" are far more broad and plentiful than listed in that article. I'm no apologist for Manning, but his career has been so much longer than Newton's and I believe his record will stand the test of time against Newton's any day.

Newton has a long way to go to even be worthy of tying Manning's shoelaces, and their names simply don't belong in the same sentence. I know you are admittedly neutral and disinterested in the comparison, and I am not a fan of either one necessarily, but I do know a snake when I see one, and Cam's unethical offenses go well beyond stealing a laptop.

His Auburn days were not so stellar and he was also caught cheating 3 times at Florida prior to those Auburn days. Blue and orange seem to bring out the worst in him, I guess. Maybe subconsciously he wants to wear orange stripes but just can't seem to have the outfit handed to him. He's a loser and a thug (obviously not speaking athletically), and he skates on everything he's ever been caught at. And he will again. It happens a lot with "celebrities" and certain politicians..... Hmmm, better stop there.
