Usually an electric car doesn't need to be 100% charged upon return. Check with the car company to see how much of a charge the car must have upon return.
We rented an electric vehicle from Avis in Las Vegas and they said 75% or higher was ok. YMMV.

Thanks. I went ahead and googled this. Budget car rental doesn’t charge if car is returned at a low charge.

And maybe I should ask this next question in the Westin forum, but is it difficult to get a parking spot with an EV charger at the Westin Kaanapali?

Has anyone rented an electric car in Maui? I know the Westin timeshares in west Maui have charging stations. I would assume you have to have the car "charged" before returning it, but would it stay charged for that 30 mile trip? I can see that there are charging stations close to the airport. Does anyone know what the costs are/what the cheapest one is? I know to go to Costco near the airport to fill up gas, but no idea where to go to charge an electric rental car.
We were assigned an electric vehicle (chevy bolt with a range of about 250 miles) by Avis in Maui, and then they tried to add on an upgrade fee. after seeing the car we were assigned we tried to go back and change it but there were about 50 people in line. the ev chargers at the westin were not working but there were some in the park next door but they weren’t working either! We had to call avis to ask how much of a charge was required on return and it was 70%. They told us there was a charger at the avis rental across the highway from the westin. There were also chargers in the sheraton maui hotel parking garage. After a few days the westin chargers were fixed and we were able to charge at the resort and return with over 70%. It was a hassle but worked in the end.

I have read very mixed reviews about renting an electric car on Maui. Most have said it's not worth it.

Our 2 most recent car rentals (minivans, Orlando FL, Jan. 2024 & Jan. 2025) were via Turo.

Turo has caught the wider world's attention. I received junk email yesterday advertising Uber car rentals.

Turo is great until something goes wrong, and then it usually goes terribly wrong. Unlike using a rental company, if something goes wrong with the vehicle or if it is not ready on time, etc., there is no backup for you so you are left high and dry and on your own. You just have to factor in that risk when deciding whether or not to use them.
