Thank goodness we already have our car rental booked for Maui. Three weeks in an SUV starting late February. Rental is with Enterprise, made through Costco. Cost is $1300 all in. Checked today with Costco and now the price is $3000!

It will go down. You just have to keep checking. When I first looked for the car we have in PV it was over $600 a week. A month later it was $725 a week. When I finally reserved the compact car it was $460 for 3 weeks. The first week was New Years week and that was the problem at $350 a day. We used the taxi and Uber for the first week.

Oh I will keep checking. I always check after I make the initial reservation. The rate did go down from when I first made the reservation. I've just never seen it go this high.

Yeah, that is a shocker. I wonder how many people reserve and never check again ?

My experience is Maui car rental prices have generally not gone down in 3+ years (since the pandemic began). As a result, we do one-day, one-way rentals the day we land, and the day we return to the airport for our 2-week trip mid-February (Budget, Avis, and Enterprise have a rental office across the street from Westin Nanea).

We want a car for our entire time on Maui. I book the car way out, sometimes almost a year ahead, and then keep checking. I've used AutoSlash in the past to monitor rates, but this time they haven't come up with anything acceptable. Besides Costco I've checked directly with AutoSlash and also with Discount Hawaiian Car Rental. I also check out individual companies. Although I'm not thrilled with the $!300 for 3 weeks, it's a heck of a lot better than $3000. Last year we paid $1014 for 3 weeks.

I travel a lot for work and book my car rentals 1 to 3 months out and nothing seems to be coming down in price over the last 2 months of travel as I get closer to departure

Through Capital One for Maui, 6 weeks and four days, $1,407, starting 2/4. The Venture X credit card is a keeper.

I am tracking on 2 weeks maui in April and my mid size SUV went from $1300 to $875 with AutoSlash tracking. Hoping for another decrease soon. .

I've been watching prices for the Big Island the end of February for 2 weeks, and the cost hasn't budged. Still too high--same as 2 years ago and 3x what I paid 2 years before that. Of course, I'll keep checking, but ....

AutoSlash really did nothing for me this time around. Early on they found a couple of lower prices, but not for anyone we would rent with.

Today cost for our rental is $3821. I doubt it will drop below the $1319 rate, which was made in October, we have before we go. Prices would have to drop dramatically in the next month. And so far they have only been going up.

Sometimes a larger discount code is provided for businesses. Maybe using the companies code would get the price lowered.
You could also look at rental car codes by googling it and sometimes you might find an affiliation you can use.

What do you mean by businesses? Are you talking about a corporate code? I used to have one for Avis and I was able to use it for awhile after I retired. But it doesn't work for me any longer. I've tried AARP discounts, discounts through the airlines that I have affiliations with, and so far none of them have gotten me better prices that going through Costco.

We have business codes we use for all of the major car rentals establishments. Sometimes this code is better than others and sometimes it isn't. They work well in Mexico but I've had better rates for Hawaii using Costco and the Hawaiian car rental site.

Just saw this article about the proposal to add more fees to Maui car rentals:

all the fees and taxes definitely add up

I don't remember what a good rate for Maui is anymore. It looks like $450 a week for a Corolla using auto slash.

I‘ve been checking car rental prices for end of February for MAUI. On Costco.com, prices dropped from $1000/week to half of that.

When I checked yesterday for our dates in late February to March the rates had gone up again!

I do, my company has a corporate account with National car rental which gives me a good rate + emerald aisle ( I go right to the car lot and pick any car / SUV / Truck I want out of the emerald aisle) My company allows me to use this for personal travel as well

Another good thing about some corporate rates is it often includes CDW. So no need to mess with credit card CDW in the event of damage. Also no hounding for the upsell at the desk or garage exit.

Has anyone rented an electric car in Maui? I know the Westin timeshares in west Maui have charging stations. I would assume you have to have the car "charged" before returning it, but would it stay charged for that 30 mile trip? I can see that there are charging stations close to the airport. Does anyone know what the costs are/what the cheapest one is? I know to go to Costco near the airport to fill up gas, but no idea where to go to charge an electric rental car.

Usually an electric car doesn't need to be 100% charged upon return. Check with the car company to see how much of a charge the car must have upon return.
