Spirit over priced it's bundling to the point where it was better to game the system. I've flown Spirit a lot more then I ever thought I would. But it's hard to pass on using them when you can game their pricing so easily.
Example: If you are traveling as a group of 3 or more, it is almost always cheaper to buy one person their highest bundle (seat, checked bag, carry on bag) and then have a second reservation where your travelers only buy tickets. Then at check-in time you get seats for your group of 2 first and then the other reservation takes a seat next to the other two people.
For one $100 fee you have all the bags you need and are all seated together. (This isn't like WN where everyone everyone tries to check-in exactly 24 hours before their flight.)

I used to fly Frontier SMF to DAY through DEN, good rate for extra legroom seat and included an adult bevvy. Once we were late into Denver for the connect and they had a cart at the gate to ferry us, they held up the connecting flight.

Then they pulled out of Sacramento and went downhill from there...

Over the past 4 years, I have flown frontier, spirit, American, United and Southwest. I didn't see any difference other than the cheap snacks and a can of soda the more expensive airlines offer.
In terms of cost, I used to be able to get spirit and frontier for significantly lower cost even with the purchase of one checked bag for the family. These days, spirit pricing has gone up although there are still significantly cheaper depending on destination.
One other thing, when spirit stopped offering direct flights to international destinations from my nearest airport, both United and Southwest (two with the most direct flights from my nearest airport) did not feel the pressure to reduce their price. Now Southwest is the most expensive followed by United. Spirit have newer planes than United, southwest, and AA (at least the ones I have been on).
Here are examples of return flights I got with spirit and frontier departing either of the two Houston airports:
BWI - $80
Denver- $70
Orlando - $50
Cancun - $150
San Jose (Costa Rica) - $168
