Song Of The Day has been on [unplanned] hiatus for nearly 3 years.

Now I'm considering bringing it back, no longer on FaceBook but exclusively here on TUG-BBS.

Impetus for that was discovery today of a valuable & fun website called Feenotes, which contains lots more information & is lots better organized than Song Of The Day, but also contains lots of links to recorded performances on U-Tube & other websites, just like Song Of The Day.

I was searching for information about Regis Iandiorio, & there it was, right there on Feenotes, complete with a link to a performance of a beautiful tune that was used as background music for a spaghetti sauce commercial on TV, with violin solo played by Regis Iandiorio.

I have never heard this piece before, but it is certainly not clear to me why it supposedly changed marching bands forever? It was well performed, although it's also a litte odd, considering the title, that while perfoming it they weren't even marching.! In any case, IMO there are marching band pieces that I would certainly rank much higher.

That tune was on a Cathedral Brass concert program last year. At the performance, the spoken introduction described the piece this way . . .

Vienna Teng graduated from Stanford University with a degree in computer science & worked as a software engineer for Cisco Systems in San Jose, California, writing music & performing in her free time. In 2002, she signed a recording contract & quit her job to concentrate on music. Hymn Of Acxiom is a protest song – not like the old-time farm worker & coal miner protest songs, but something newer that relates to today's digital world which crowds around us in ways we are not always aware of – ways that a computer scientist turned musician might be acutely tuned to. It helps to know that Acxiom – one of the biggest billion-dollar companies you never heard of – sifts internet information worldwide to help clients design advertising campaigns & pinpoint potential customers. Unlike the old-time bold & heroic protest songs, the Hymn Of Acxiom is moody & ethereal, but powerful nevertheless . . .
Somebody hears you, you know that inside.
Someone is learning the colors of all your moods,
To show that you’re understood.

Now we possess you . . .
Now we will build you an endlessly upward world,
(reach in your pocket) embrace you for all you’re worth.

Is that wrong?
Isn’t this what you want?

Thanks to @AwayWeGo for the background to the Hymn of Acxiom, it does put it into a little better perspective.

Sousa was certainly one of the composers that came to my mind as much more influential on marches, military marches in particular. The Stars and Stripes Forever is certainly an exemplary illustration of his talents, although it was a bit later than some of his earlier pieces, such as Semper Fidelis, The Thunderer, and The Washington Post.

It was a different style and sound from older and more traditional British military marches, such as The British Grenadiers and even those more contemporary to Sousa, such as The Great Little Army.

This recording of Sound Off took my thoughts back to a particularly impressive drill cadence that I came across years ago. I think of it as a form of a capella singing. There are lots of cadence clips out there, if you enjoy that type of thing, but as an air force brat myself, I was particularly impressed at both the control and voice of this particular MTI, USAF SSGT Esparza.
