I'll let you know how that goes.

Just say NO :D

Take your time, there is no need to rush. Read all the info you can here about buying or renting a TS, ask questions and eventually join TUG if you decide that a TS is for you and your family.

I did my follow up call, the contract department said that my information was received and my account was noted.
This means nothing. Until you have your refund in hand I'd hold on to that certified mail return receipt!

John,
They always offer you another deal. SAY NO NO NO! You are one of the few lucky people that have the chance to get out of an expensive deal and still get an education for very little money.
Oh My God for the money you were going to spend you could buy very top of the line resale resorts which developers are still selling inventory from.
Do your research and buy something you really like and feel good about. Somewhere you would want to vacation. You mentioned kids. Somewhere you could take the whole family or just you wife.
If you don't own a quality resort with a decent size unit you'll never be able to trade into a quality resort with a decent size unit. Unless you learn all the tricks of timeshareing which takes years.
Have fun with the research and finding the perfect resort for your family. There are alot of resorts to choose from on the Eastern coast.
Join TUG it will be worth thousands of dollars to you. It already has been.
Good Luck

TUG saved the day

I was really on the fence until the fine folks at TUG came to the rescue. I was up at 2:00 am clicking F5 on my keyboard. :D You all were really instrumental in getting through this. I just got off the phone with the deed department and it went like one of those capital one commercials. NO... no.. no.. ;)

Thanks again for all your help. They told me they were going to start processing my refund and it may take 7-10 business days. I'm going to take that money and sign up with TUG. I'll also look for some books on the subject. My mother has a trial membership with the resort, hopefully I'll be able to school her like you all have schooled me. Thanks again.

Sincerely,

John

I'd still send the certified mail, and....

Just remember - DON'T buy from the developer no matter what they offer.

I did my follow up call, the contract department said that my information was received and my account was noted. I have a voice mail from the deed office, I guess they want to play Monty Hall with me. They mentioned something about doing a every other year deal. I'll let you know how that goes.

Good job John!!

You did great.
Your very welcome!
Now save that money to buy resale. Or for your kids college fund(not near as fun as timeshare shopping)
If you want to make it a hobby start watching the e-bay timeshare auctions: note John I said WATCH not buy.
There is so much to learn. My sister lives in MA. and owns a few resorts on the cape and in the berkshires. Some resorts give their weeks away sometimes. Just to have owners to pay the maints. fees each year. There are so many avenues to purchase timeshare.

Cancel ASAP

You will get a great deal of disinformation from Timeshare sales staff. It sounds great when they say "you can use it anywhere around the world", unfortunately it does not work so smoothly. The better resorts many times are claimed very very early by anyone of the tens-of-thousands of Timeshare owners who are looking for that great property to vacation at.
Secondly, they also do not tell you that in the name hotel/Timeshare resorts they set aside very few rooms for Timeshare users.
Another point is that compared to Las Vegas Atlantic City is a poor runner-up.
The advice I can give you is I rue the day that I bought a Timeshare in Sint Maarten. Hold on to your money! :(

Don't waste a lot of money on books. Some are decent, otheres offer misinformation. You will get a lot out of this site (FAQs, timesharing 101, etc.) You can also get a lot from the internet on other sites similar to this, articles, etc. Most questions you ask will be answered promptly right here on TUG by some of the true industry experts.

That was a cheap timeshare if the refund only covers the cost of joining TUG :D

Any promises made over the phone are worthless. Make sure you send all the required papers by certified mail before the deadline.

In Writing

Make sure you FEDEX (or something else that you can trace) them a letter detailing that you want to rescind

If you don't, I guarantee that they will swear they never spoke to you
