At the end of the day shilling is no different then a reserve price.
Perhaps no different mathematically but legally there is a big difference. Shilling is fraud in every state and criminal in some, while a reserve price is legal everywhere.
I would argue though that even mathematically there is a difference. I generally won't waste my time with a reserve auction but I may get hit with a shill on a non-reserve.
Also, sniping does not prevent a shill. Shill bidders can snipe just like the rest of us. Or the earlier shill max bid is unknown until your snipe hits.
