FL public schools closed for two weeks. Are schools in your area / state closed?

Yes. We have 12 confirmed cases in the state (last I knew), affected counties have closed schools.

In Arkansas, four counties were closed.
That was it.
Never mind the fact that counties adjoining these four have a lot of commuters into the four county area for work.
They seem to be waiting for confirmed cases to hit counties before they will consider closing schools.
Never mind the fact that many suspected cases are waiting to be tested and there are likely a good number of people with the virus already (just not with the severe version).
Our government missed an opportunity to close down schools for a week and then get a 'free' week as our spring break is coming up Mar 23-27.
They might be trying to do this on the back end of spring break but who knows?

The entire State of Washington's schools are closing by Tuesday for six weeks.

Dave

North Jersey for 2 weeks.

I just saw Wisconsin is until 04-06-20 for right now at least.

Nothing but events being closed here in Hawaii. For now anyway.

I work with many people in Ohio. We are in Florida. They have closed schools up there for three weeks. I am not sure that it really makes sense. Aren't the young the least vulnerable? THis mandate has a huge impact on many employees. How do they get child care for their kids? I guess only a blip of an inconvenience.

PA schools are closed for two weeks.

Ohio schools closed for 3 weeks for now.
Except preschool and daycare at this time. My daughter works at head start , 3 and 4 year olds , they are not closing at this time.

Don’t think that’s right, what deems them less important.

Dave

Yes, all public and Catholic schools in New Mexico are closing.

DE closing for two weeks. Looks like boston closed for 6 weeks.

Minnesota’s schools are staying open at the recommendation of the commissioner of education, at least for now. But most colleges, at least in the Minneapolis area, have cancelled in person classes for online.

Yep, In IL. Closed for next 3 weeks, 1 of which is spring break week

All schools in Virginia will be closed from K to 12 starting Monday for two (2) weeks.; By Executive Order by the Governor of Virginia.

In NY, it is up to the school district. Some have closed for a day or two for "deep cleaning", some closed for a week. All state colleges and universities are closed.
My district will not close until the county health department mandates it.
A big reason is that we have a lot of disadvantaged children who depend on the 2 meals a day they receive at school. I see that this issue is being addressed and provisions are being made to fund meals during a closure.

Two counties mine and the next one, Lancaster and Kershaw SC are closed for 14 days, ordered by the governor.

All Los Angeles schools seem to be closed, and San Diego too.

The Alabama governor announced today the closing of all K-12 schools for 2 1/2 weeks, beginning next Thursday. I didn’t get it at first but I guess maybe it gives parents more time to make arrangements for their kids.

Alabama has only 2 confirmed cases so far but they had tested less than 50 people as of yesterday. This morning, the first drive thru test location opened in the Birmingham area.

I am SoCal. OC. We are closed for 2wks w/ online learning starting 3/18. Most are closed 2wks or 3 depending on their Spring Break. I know a couple where I work are waiting to announce until after their Spring Break. I know Long Beach is 4wks. A colleague’s Private school is closed for 5wks. Most though are 2wks in So Cal.

All Washington state K-12 schools will be closed next week until April 24. More than 1 month.

We live Outside of San Francisco (East Bay). This afternoon our school district and our neighboring county district announced school closures until April 13.

schools are basically petri dishes / illness exchange factories .

All these closings / worldwide : are being done to slow the rate of transmission and prevent local hospitals from becoming overwhelmed .

when I google - critical care / ICU hospital beds - I get a USA number of
35 adult beds per 100,000 . ( average )-
[ neonatal units etc also exist- which are not structured for adult use ]

If Ohio ( pop. 11.6 million) is statistically at this average - there are about
4000 such beds .

If 10 % of Ohio gets Covid 19 and half of 1 % ( 0.05 %) of those need an adult
critical care bed = 8000 beds .

Many of those beds are currently occupied.

If you flatten and extend the curve of increase - you can keep turning those beds over for new patients .

It is a bit like a timeshare with 200 units and 52 weeks = 10,400 week interval owners . BUT if everyone expects to have a holiday week .....

However - the negative consequences of not getting a critical care bed ( and a ventilator) when needed are much worse .
Italy is the CURRENT poster child .NO jurisdiction in the world wants to be the next example .
cancelling schools / extending March break is one component in the big picture .
