School closings

Watching the Local news tonight And they had the NC Superintendent of Schools on and he said they were preparing not to reopen the schools until the next school year which would be the last week of August here. Said they were finalizing the plans and would make formal announcement in a day or two.

Given that annual testing has (in effect) been cancelled for this year, it would not be the worst idea.
In Arkansas, we are scheduled to return April 20 and school is out for the year around May 22.
You really won't accomplish much in those last 4 weeks.

kids in my neighborhood today were cycling and playing outside ,,,, not much learning going on !
This is one reason I would love to have students take the EOY tests this year if at all possible.
It would give us some firm data on how important the classroom may (or may not) be toward learning.

All public schools from K - 12 in Virginia are closed for this academic school year. This decision was announced by the Governor of Virginia Monday, March 23, 2020.

This means no high schools events, no high schools graduation, no proms, no sporting activities like track, baseball, swimming, golf, tennis, soccer or field hockey. What are children going to do?

Same as kids everywhere else in the states - whatever they have at home. Same as adults, do without.

Our schools in Ontario Canada have been closed since mid-March. Yesterday our Premier (think State Governor if in USA) said they are unlikely to reopen this year.

In Maryland they announced another 4 weeks of closure (already closed for 2) and 4 weeks added to the end of the school year so as of now schools would open April 27 (closed until at least April 24) and then go until July 17.

School until July 17th - that ain't going to fly....

And with EOY testing no longer required - why?

I have several problems with this schools closing events. There were a small minority number of students that were not passing in the classrooms. Will these students automatically passed all their classroom courses this year.?:ponder:

Second, seniors in high schools, they will have no memories of their high school senior year. No yearbook, no senior prom, and no graduation day. IMHO.

Will graduating high school seniors still be required to take the SAT and ACt for college ?

I think I've heard of some schools that will go ahead and have yearbooks, though the spring sports won't be included. As the years pass I think memories of the prom and graduation day kind of fade in importance as other events become more and more important, such as graduating from college, first jobs, marriage, birth of children & grandchildren.
