Hi TUG fam. My name is Ryuuichi, and here's my survey.

1) Is there a vacation destination you wish to visit most of the time or on a regular basis? if so where?
We spend a lot of time in Southern California and San Francisco, so those are usually well visited.

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
I would most likely trade most of the time.

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?
My top 5 trade destinations are: New Zealand, Philippines, Disneyland, Disney World, and New York.

4) How many people do you usually travel with?
I usually travel in a group of 4 adults (my parents, my self, and my brother).

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?
I can travel at any time.

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?
Yes, I can.

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?
Yes, definitely.

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?
I'm fine with 3 stars if it's really just a place to sleep and I'm out site seeing most of the day, but if I am vacationing in the accommodation for a long time, 4 and above would definitely be nice.

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?
~$1k

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?
At most, $2.4k

11) Are you a detail oriented planner?
Yes, I am.

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?
Yes, I do.

You say that you would rather trade most of the time. You will need a resort that is a strong trader. There are some strong trading timeshares in California.

Hello Ryuuichi, Welcome to TUG.

I am relatively new to timesharing, but I will try to help you and give you my ideas.

First, if you are interested in timesharing and want a strong trader for exchanging, you may need to consider increasing your purchase price. There are great bargains out there, but depending on what season you prefer or how many bedrooms you would like or what view your unit has, you may need to spend more.

You said you like California. That could be where your home resort would be. You stated you want to exchange often. If you live in California and can’t travel away from home for some reason, you can still make it for your vacation.

There are several exchange companies. The biggest two are RCI and Interval International. They both have resorts in the Philippines and New Zealand, but I don’t know how hard it is to get a trade to either country. You would need to join the exchange company (for a fee).
If you would like to trade into Disney timeshares, right now they trade in RCI. If you own a timeshare in the Orlando/Kissimmee area, Disney/RCI will not allow you to trade into a Disney timeshare.
Below are links for the two major exchange companies.

You can check and see the resorts they are affiliated with:
Interval:

RCI:

It sounds like you would need a two bedroom unit, if your brother is ok with sleeping on the pull-out couch. Otherwise, maybe a 3 bedroom.

Overall, take your time and explore TUG. There are very good articles and discussions on the site. You might want to try renting a timeshare from a TUGger first, to try timesharing out and see if it is a good fit for you and your family.
