I never stored or served the chicken in the container (used two forks to lift it out to put on a plate, and that was the end of it), so whatever keeps the price at $4.99 is good for me. I saw the chickens in the bag last week in San Diego. I am sure that I will get used to the change.

I always have them put the chicken in an empty box when they "bag" the groceries. Years ago I had a hard container leak in the car, so I have been doing that ever since. I don't plan to change that. Cleaning up that greasy, smelly mess once in a lifetime is plenty.
Got my first new chicken bag today. I do not like it. I placed the chicken bag into a brown meat plastic bag, then into an empty cardboard box. I do not want any leaking surprises in my car when I return home.

Since Costco claims to lose money on their chix, maybe this is their way to sell less of 'em while still offering the bargain price?

It would surprise me if the plastic tubs people are losing their minds over cost any more than a few pennies each.

The bags are probably a fraction of a penny.

Costco sells so much chicken that this math adds up for them.

The chicken bags have a vent hole in the sides. I always put them in a meat bag. Did you post this in the parking lot: "I do not want any leaking surprises in my car when I return home."

Did you have any leaks?

No leaks detected, and I purchased two chickens since my posting above.

Ask for a box to put the chicken in on the way home.

Buy a plastic, ceramic, or glass container, probably at the dollar store, in which to keep Costco Chickens. When you buy one, immediately cut the bag open and load the bird into the container.

In about two weeks, there'll be Costco Chicken Coops for sale on Amazon. By my mentioning them here, they'll be in my Yahoo! feed too.

Law of Unintended Consequences: where I live, the plastic shell can be recycled if you wash it; the bag cannot.

There was nothing to keep the old style hard plastic boxes from leaking if loaded on their side either.

Upthread I mentioned a nice ceramic Corningware lidded casserole that fits a Costco chicken just fine, but I expect aftermarket 'chicken boxes' to be available all over.

Yes, they could be recycled, but most likely were not. In the US, most of the plastic that is sent off to be recycled actually ends up in a landfill.

Fortunately, Costco's in our area have not yet shifted to the bag. I highly doubt that it is any more environmentally friendly overall, but probably saves them money.

Well, I can believe it takes more space (= more trucks) to ship the plastic container and at 60,000+ rotisserie chickens sold per day, that adds up quick. Saves them money and saves the environment

Can you cite a reference for that statistic?

The problem is collection, specifically in rural areas. "Most of the plastic" that is collected actually ends up recycled.

If the plastic is never collected to be recycled, it obviously cannot be sent off to be recycled, and that is probably true for 90%+ of the plastic consumed in the USA.

There is also the problem of finding buyers for that "recycled" plastic. The bottom fell out of the market a number of years ago when a certain country stopped importing US based plastic waste if it had too many contaminants. This is a big problem with single stream recycling. A lot of the waste ends up contaminated and people put plastics and even cardboards in recycling that really can't be recycled.

So the waste management company in my area:

1) Distributes large "Recycle" containers to collect plastic, glass, paper, cardboard, etc.

2) The company buys additional trucks and employs additional drivers to collect the contents of the "Recycle" containers.

3) The company dumps "a lot of the [recycled] waste" in the landfill.

How does that make any business sense? Or, do you have it completely wrong.

I think the latter, as would any economics professor.

Exactly. If worried, put them in a (some) brown meat bag(s), as we have done even with the old containers, and then ask for a box.

Large corporations all strive to appear to be concerned about the environment, but normal consumers usually don't understand the implications. Plastic packaging usually is either made from recycled plastic, or is made from plastic that can be recycled. The problem is that plastic bags made from recycled plastic can't be recycled. As an example, the pet food bags for Science Diet are made from recycled plastic, but the bags can't be recycled and should never be discarded in the trash recycle bins. Our local trash management company emphasizes not to put plastic bags in their bins, but people still do it. Plastic bags primarily end up in landfills. I expect the Costco chicken bags aren't recyclable, but the containers might be.

Well, this past Wednesday, I was visiting with a friend and she was about to head out to Costco and asked if I needed anything. I told her that I would like 2 Rotisserie Chickens and gave her cash to pay for them. When she arrived at my house she gave me change. The 2 chickens were in bags and cost different amounts because they had been weighed and priced at $1.66/lb. One was $4.02 and the other was $4.59. As soon as I opened the bags, I could tell they were smaller. Sam's still has the larger chickens for $4.99 and in the plastic container. I will buy mine there in the future.

I think it's awesome they are weighing the chickens now! I often want a smaller chicken and theirs were too large most of the time.

They weigh the chickens when they are less than 3lb cooked. Sometimes they get batches of smaller birds. If it is over 3lb, you get it for the $4.99.
