Greeting TUG'ers !!!

After getting rid of Dashline (http://tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=224491)

I'm now faced with restoring the "remembering" feature that Dashline eliminated.

When I initially enter a website (ie: GMail, etc.)
and enter my user-id and password,
Windows (I think it's windows) would ask something like:
  • "Would you like Windows to remember your user-id and password?"
And I'd select "yes".
A few websites also asked or used-to-ask (Gmail) but meany Dashline
stopped that feature.

Would appreciate any help in this endeavor.

Thanks, Doug

Depends on your browser (which you didn't specify). For Chrome, you go to settings, and in the Privacy section (under advanced settings), there is a button "Clear browsing data...". In that dialog, there is a checkbox for passwords. That will clear out the saved passwords and will also reset it where you said not to save a password for a site.

There is also a "Passwords and forms" section with a couple of options to enable/disable the saving of passwords. You can manage your passwords there as well.

I would suspect there is something similar for other browsers.

Hi Kurt !

Sorry for not mentioning my browser.
I use the latest version of FireFox.

I don't see "settings" but I think the three horizontal bars
of the upper-right section might be its equivalent ?????

I clicked on "options" and from there "privacy"...
The first option "Firefox will":
  • Remember History
  • Never Remember History
  • Use Custom Settings for History (this is the current selection)
The "Custom Setting for History" are:
  • Remember my browsing and download history"
  • Accept cookies from sites
  • Accept third party cookies

Kurt:
Enlighten Me... am I on the right track ?

Thanks, Doug

You're very close. Instead of "privacy", you want the next tab, "security". There you'll find a checkbox for "Remember passwords for sites".

Hi Bob !

Thanks for jumping in to help, Bob.

I now have that check-box... checked.

So I exited my gmail-account and logged on to another gmail account.
Had to enter the password.

Then exited the second gmail-account.
Logged on to my primary gmail-account having to enter its password.

Then exited my primary... and tried to re-enter my secondary gmail-account.
But... I still was required to enter its password.

Was this supposed to also remember the passwords for Gmail
or would that be a different animal ?

Doug

You're welcome, Doug, and I'm sorry I can't help more. I also use a password manager (lastpass), so it's been a while since I had Firefox remember mine. You might try going into the Exceptions screen and try clearing out all exceptions. Perhaps gmail tells Firefox to not remember its password; but that's just a guess. I'm afraid I have little more to offer. Good luck!

Greeting Bob !

I checked "exceptions" and it's empty.

I normally don't have to remember my passwords for gmail or other frequently visited sites
because previous to BD (Before Dashline)... they were automatically populated.
I maintain a so-called "secret" :D source for all my passwords and occasionally
need to resort to it.

Thanks for your assistance Bob and Kurt !!!

Sorry I couldn't help more; I am most familiar w/ Chrome. Perhaps you would like to switch to Chrome? ;)

Many sites with sensitive information (such as banks, brokerages, etc) are coded to prevent saving login information. And some with not-so-sensitive information too, it seems. This is for your protection to prevent unauthorized access to your accounts by other people using the same computer.

If you are willing to accept the risk of having this data saved, you SOMETIMES can get around this prohibition (depending on how it was coded on the original page) via a bookmarklet which you activate while on the page, and before submitting your login data. If it works, FFox will pop up the usual "save this login data?" query when you log in.

Here's one good source of bookmarklets:
http://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/
Go there and read up on bookmarklets, then click on the 'Form bookmarklets' link and drag the "Remember Password" one to your bookmark bar.

Thanks Doug.

I appreciate "sensitive" sites discourage saving log-in user-id and/or Passwords.
I'm just trying to restore what I had, prior to installing and uninstalling DashLine.

That said, I'll take a peek at Bookmarklets.
Mahalo !
