Recommendation for a light weight vacuum

We gave our big, old, heavy upright vacuum to our son so now I'm looking for a powerful but lightweight vacuum. We have carpet in the bedroom and have marble floors in the kitchen and living areas. I want something that is strong enough to clean the carpeting and an area rug, and one that would have strong suction but a gentle setting that won't scratch the marble floor.

Any recommendations?

I have had that one for a couple years, and pets, toddlers, and messy teenagers have not slowed it down.
The belt did break last year, but I was able to easily find a replacement online, installed it myself, and it still going strong.
I really like that I dont have to buy bags, and I wash the bin twice or so a year. I soak it in water, clean and rinse, then let stand for a few hours.
My 2 cents.

We have a Hoover Sprint QuikVac in our condo. It does a fine job, and does have a 'hard floor' setting as well as an onboard wand for above the floor cleaning. It's bagless. $60 on Amazon. It goes on sale for under $50. It is kind of narrow-as in it doesn't cover a wide swath, but if you're just cleaning a fairly small area- traffic lanes for instance, light weight trumps large coverage.

I bought a Dyson battery model that was way expensive for my boat. I had just paid (again, what seemed to be way too expensive) for a new carpet to be installed

As it turned out both were good deals. I got the premier yacht carpet installer in San Diego and a superior job. And the Dyson far exceeds my expectations

I like the Dyson so much I bought one for my home too. I almost never use the Miele anymore. Until I used the Little Dyson, my suggestion would have been the Miele

My wife loves the cordless Dyson v8 we purchased last Christmas. It seems very light and the one thing I really like is it is really handy for many clean up chores because it can break down very small. I used ours to clean the hanging light fixtures and ceiling fans out this fall. It also works in the small areas of our cars. The hvac return air filter gets a quick vacuum between clean outs. Rex even gets the dyson cleaner when he rolls in the lawn. Very handy on likely on sale.

DW has one of these. It's really just a canister vacuum. Very simple, but somehow it does fill it's bags. Imo, kind of a piece of crap, but very lightweight, and good on short nap carpet and to dust hard surface.

I have a cordless (stick) Dyson V6 Animal, V7 Animal and now the V8 Absolute. I use the V6 and V7 on my tile floors without worry, but the V8 Absolute has a second head without a beater bar designed for hardwood or other floors where scratching might be a concern.

I could go on and on about how much I love this product (and it is worth EVERY penny that I paid - they are not inexpensive, but good tools never are, or so my husband tells me when he is buying something.....) but y'all might accuse me of working for Dyson!

The Dyson where the canister rolls on the floor takes the feel of the weight off in comparison to the upright model. In an upright model I find the Oreck good and lightweight.

Be careful about the Dyson cordless models. We had one, used it correctly, and were generally satisfied with it. Exactly one month after the warranty expired, I went to use it, turned it on, the vacuum motor went POP!, and it was d-e-a-d dead dead dead. A very expensive doorstop was born.

Thanks, Bill. This was several years ago, and we had it for a few years before that. Don't think it was a Costco purchase. I think we got it on Amazon.

I'm not watching it so much anymore but Woot.com seemed to frequently have refurbed Dysons. They had to come from somewhere- like returns to a service center, fixed and resold. I don't see that from other brands.

We just replaced our older Dyson Animal upright with a newer Animal--and have been very happy with both.
The older Animal was 7 years old and was still kicking, but I broke the kickstand and willed it to my niece's first apartment with a bungey cord to keep it upright. The newer Animal has a significantly higher suction power and is a bit heavier, but I'm really happy with it.
Well worth the $$ for both; consider the 20% off coupons for Bed, Bath & Beyond (as well as Woot refurbished as Jim suggested).

P.S. Meant to say it has optional rug or flat (non-brush) surface settings...perfectly fine for marble, tile or hardwood if you use the flat setting.

We are Dyson converts as well. I bought a refurbished unit from Overstock a number of years ago and saved a bundle. It looked brand new when it arrived, but some reviewers received noticeably used vacuums, so ymmv.

Love our Dyson lightweight and we are on our third. The second one went to my son. Our house cleaner used the first one that we bought without permission and broke it into a couple of pieces, likely dropped it from 2nd storey down or something and quietly put back into our closet. When we learned of it, she said she thought we knew how to put it back together, and we fired her. We just put it out with pick up the junk day and someone down the street took it home.

Every house keeper/cleaner wants to use our Dyson because not only is it lightweight, but it manages to vacuum out the cat hair from the thick rugs. Their commercial ones aren't able to pull the cat hair out.

We,ve had central vac since 1983. It's stronger than any of the uprights or canisters, the only weight is the hose, quieter than anything else and once it's vacuumed it's gone. Buy it once and your done.

The problem with this approach is that it is akin to us planting trees - once we get a place like we want it, we end up moving!

Those older model Dyson didn't have a good battery system but the Dyson v8 that came out last year kind of does. Our v8 runs for 40 minutes compared to 20 minutes of the older models. I should say is suppose to run for 40 minutes on a charge but the reality is we never use it for 40 minutes. I think the warranty is 2 years through Dyson and the 1 year through the credit card which was my Visa.

This Dyson v8 also has a super suction mode that will drain the battery fairly fast but it really is handy to pick up heavier small items like washers, nuts and coins. It is easy to collect your items in the small see through disposal of this machine.

Many purchases with a decent credit card carry an additional year warranty through the credit card. I haven't thought to use this benefit yet as I haven't needed to.

I've tried several uprights over the years, including two Dyson's. I just don't like them. They are too awkward and heavy. I love my lightweight Miele canister vacuum except for one thing. In order to make it light weight one of the things they cut back on is the length of the cord. I have to change to other outlets more often than I'd like but it beats a painful back!

I don't like the Dyson uprights either, too heavy. The rolling canister from Dyson is light, easy to use and has a long cord. Never tried the Miele, will keep it in mind if I need another vacuum.
