Paris 2024 Olympics

How about the Women's Volleyball (3 HUSKERS on the USA team). 6am Central tomorrow (Sunday, 11th) we play for the GOLD!!! <3

My favorites to watch are gymnastics and swimming. But I've been enjoying some of the track and field events, especially the long races and the relays.

"The 2028 Games will feature the debut of flag football and squash as optional sports, joined by the return of baseball/softball, cricket and lacrosse.
Break dancing, which was featured at the 2024 Olympic Games as an optional sport, will not return."

I’m sorry that breaking won’t be at the 2028 Olympics. The athleticism was phenomenal. Yesterday morning when NBC switched from the preliminary rounds of breaking to a gymnastics event that involved young women tossing hoops in the air and catching them while performing intermittent somersaults, it was quite the contrast. I think the gymnastics event belonged in a dance competition - it was similar to baton twirling, nowhere near as athletic as breaking was.

They ran into a buzz-saw. Italy was the better team.
Too bad, so sad.

Good news. The memes on Instagram are a hoot. If the clips I saw were real, they were not athletic except for spinning on your head. The commenters are hilarious.

Umm, they did a lot more than spin on their heads. They did many twisting, bending, springing moves very similar to gymnastics floor exercises. As I said above, it seemed to me to be way more athletic than the young ladies marching in patterns across the floor, throwing hoops into the air and catching them, that followed yesterday's breaking preliminary rounds. Let me add I was expecting to say that breaking didn’t deserve to be in the Olympics, but after watching the competition I believe breaking deserves to be there at least as much if not more than the “gymnastics” that involves hoop throwing and ribbon waving.

oh boy, debates about what deserves to be in the Olympics. Should I start a list of "athletic" activities and "sports" that I consider to be
Stupid Human Tricks, most of which I could not hope to do.
all rights to "Stupid Human Tricks" go to Johnny Carson's or Letterman's writers, whichever it was

Go watch a bunch of Stupid Pet Tricks. Then go watch a bunch of this stuff being debated.

I am more into sports that can be scored objectively. Those that have an 'artistic' element less so. I can't see how 'synchronized swimming' or similar diving categories are harder for me to wrap my head around than track & field where shorter time, or higher bar or furthest throw or jump gets the higher score.

And since they have ice skating in Winter Olympics, how come there isn't roller skating in summer ones?

That said, I have enjoyed these games more than perhaps any Summer Olympics I've seen. I look forward to 4 more years in Los Angeles.

Bravo, Paris!

I agree! A return to Paris wasn't on our radar until the Olympics. How can we not go back next year especially since we already have committed to a cruise to/from Southampton?

In the words of Step Curry. Night! Night! Until 2028 in Los Angeles.

FWIW...I enjoyed watching breakdancing. Amazing athleticism (I agree with @holley7 that this is much more difficult and interesting to watch than the gymnastics artistic baton tape twirling thingy).

But what impressed me the most was the sportsmanship of each side facing off for fun then making peace at the end of the competition. You don't see this in all sports (It's all about appeals to the judges and winning) I find this sportsmanship refreshing and a good model for our kids because they won't always win in life; win or lose people will remember and respect you by how you acted.

Perhaps they should offer a team/country sportsmanship award medal to encourage such behavior.

The opening ceremony [DELETED] were a turnoff to many.

Paris is a wonderful city to have a week in, but to do the normal things in Paris. I would not want to go Paris or any place like it when a major event was in town, unless it was a major event I intended to spend a lot time at.

For the casual tourist, most tourist attractions had less than normal summertime crowds. My gf had never been and I’d never been less crowded at the must see places.

Friendly reminder: Please don't detour into contentious social issues. Thank you!

Maybe my attention span is getting shorter, but we only made an effort to watch a few events. I did watch short stints of events when I found them on TV, and enjoyed that, but got bored with some of the delays or time between action and moved on.

Having the Peacock app was a great addition for the Olympics. We were able to watch most everything we wanted without having to waste our time on things we did not want to watch, for the most part.

Yes, I agree. We used for the few events we really wanted to watch. They had a good organization and made it easy to find events that interest you.
