Does anyone have a Palm Pre? If so what do you like and dislike about it? What are some good apps? Will probably switch to one in a few weeks.

Thanks.
Nancy

ps. I see the new Palm Pixi is coming out, but I still think I want a Pre.

Bump. I was sure a Tugger or so would have one.

If Verizon had them I'd be enjoying one

I like them - love to have one (I have had the chance to use one for awhile on Sprint so I know it is probably THE best smartphone around right now) but I have to wait until Verizon has them available to have my own! Drooling but still waiting.... (and using my ultra-reliable Treo 755p that STILL blows away the iPhony)

I have had mine for a few month. I REALLY like it. It is great that I can get on the internet while on vacation and check restaurant reviews on tripadvisor :) I also like that you can put an appointment on the google calendar on the pre and can access it on your computer and likewise, you can enter an appointment on your computer and you can access it on your pre. Same thing with your address book. There is a cool feature with the address book that you can tap an address and the map will pop up. You can also get directions and gps tracking.

Thanks for the comments. Still trying to decide about Pre (currently on Sprint and happiy with that) or IPhone (family would have to switch to AT&T). Can get Pre now, but must wait until near Christmas to switch networks.

AT&T coverage is not very good

You would be extremely disappointed with a change to AT&T network. It isn't as good as even Sprints which falls far short of Verizon. If you plan to change you'd be far better off with Verizon which offers by far the best coverage, although at this moment they are behind the curve in phone hardware due to all these "exclusive" releases on specific carriers. It looks like by year end many of the phones will start to be available on multiple carriers and once again the best carrier will be also offering the best phones. That doesn't include the iPhone as in reality serving as a phone is it's weakest feature and there is no firm plans to offer it outside of AT&T that I've heard of.

We did a 30 day trial of AT&T, Sprint and our existing Verizon. They finished Verizon, Sprint with AT&T a distant third in coverage - especially data coverage. We kept our primary service as Verizon both for local and travel with Sprint as our backup (and boy does everyone like those Pre's on that side! Hope Verizon comes through with those soon).

I was a sprint customer for well over 10 years. I wanted to get a smartphone and got a HTC Touch Pro back in January b/c that was considered the best smart phone on the market. Well, I hated it. So, in late feb or early march I got an iPhone and I just LOVE it!!! After a couple of months being solo, I got my wife an iPhone and we switched the whole family over to AT&T. My wife also loves her iPhone. My parents also switched over and my 67 y/o dad got an iPhone and he loves it to. The ease of use is just amazing and all the features and all the great apps IMO is unparalleled.

I have no experience with the pre nor any other palm product. I suspect it's a very good smart phone, but it came a little late to the game and I doubt it will ever have anywhere near the number of great apps available for the iPhone. With my experience with the htc touch pro, I'd say beware of how something looks "on paper" to how it performs in real life. I'd ask friends or friends of friends what phones they have and what they like or dislike. Timeos2 is very biased against the iPhone (iphony as he calls it) and very pro any palm product. I honestly never owned an apple product before the iPhone.

BTW, I just wrote this reply on my iPhone while sitting on the can. I know, too much information, but I really use this iPhone a ton. It's just so damn easy!

The iPhone is the best electronics product ever created. There is a reason why Apple is blowing away all of the analysts expectations for sales volume.

How is the Pre selling? Horribly. The market just doesn't believe that it's a good enough product. Who knows if Palm will even be in business next year?

Just google "Palm Pre Sales." Here are the headlines of the first 3 hits:

Palm's Pre Smart Phone Fails to Stem Deep Losses

Palm Pre Sales Fail to Meet Analyst Expectations

Analyst Predicts Big Drop In Palm Pre Sales

Why would anyone buy a phone from such a company on the brink? The Palm Pre was over hyped by a bunch of nerds who don't put their money where their mouth is. Even this boards biggest advocate of the Palm Pre doesn't own one. That says a lot.

On the other hand, here is what is happening with the iPhone:

iPhone sales drive Apple to record setting Q4

Apple Sold 7.4M iPhones in its fiscal 4th quarter. The Pre is still trying to sell as many total Pres as the Iphone 3G sold in its first weekend. It has to have been one of the biggest duds of all time. So much hype, so few sales.

Please nerds, tell us how the market is stupid and doesn't really understand what it wants. Well, I think the market knows exactly what it wants. And, it wants iPhones.

All other smart phones are aiming for number 2 at this point. In case you haven't read, the next iPhone killer is the Motorola Droid. It, too, will fail.

Apple COO Tim Cook also took a very Apple-esque jab at iPhone competitors with this little quote:
“We think people are trying to catch up with the first iPhone released two years ago.”

People keep trying to knock the iPhone by bashing AT&T. They are looking at it the wrong way. AT&T is legendary for its poor quality network. Yet, people keep buying iPhones and switching carriers. What could that be? It's because the iPhone is such a great product that people will put up with crappy phone service to own it. And, they pay more for it. Just wait until the exclusivity that AT&T has goes away. Then, the iPhone will really crush the competition.

In sort of an "oh yeah?!" retort...

I've been carrying Palm products for more than 15 years, the original App machine. Like a phone, their PDA's are good for approximately 2 years and then it's time for a newer, better unit.

I now carry a 755p, the last unit from what I can tell which still operates on Palm OS and can run the app's I had on my original Palm and subsequent units. THIS has been a big selling point for me, and the biggest factor when I purchased this phone.

Frankly, the iPhone is cool. I'd probably have one if I didn't have the desire to run legacy app's I utilize regularly. I'm on Verizon as well and if iPhone was available on the big V, it would be a no brainer for the next purchase. The PRE could very well bridge the gap for me if I could still run my legacy app's...but I'm not sure they can or will. Still, when my $500 GPS unit can be purchased as an app for an Iphone for under $90 (which it can!), and everyone under the sun is falling all over themselves to provide their app's for it, there's a strong reason to change.

Apple today is the Sony of the 70's...great user interface and subsequent great rep. Nothing wrong with Apple except maybe the cult like smugness its owners sometimes exhibits. (Not talking about any one here mind you!)

Of course all this is great until the next latest and greatest thing comes along. <g>

The imitator did well but its far from best

It's easy not to have what you would LIKE to have when you don't NEED it! My nearly four year old Palm 755p has, does and will do anything (and FAR more) than any iPhone and do it cheaper, more reliably and in a better form factor (keyboard AND touch screen for one) on a far better network (that, and the PHONE are the keys - AT&T as well as the PHONE portiuon of the iPhone don't compare) than the imitator. Just because an even BETTER unit - the Pre - exists and adds even more features not found on the iPhony doesn't mean I have to have one. I can wait (and really not suffer saving my $200-$300) until Verizon has it. Until then I lack nothing but the frustrations I see with iPhione users I don't "enjoy":) .

IPhone

Well after much thought, I decided to switch networks and get an IPhone. I've been a Palm user for many years and on Sprint for many years. Just was afraid of Palm's lack of support and apps.

What? Nobody's mentioned anything about Blackberry's hold on the business market.

Does the Palm Pre run Microsoft Word? What about the other phones? I use MS-Word so much that I really can't see buying a phone without it. (I use MS-Word a lot on the old Palm PDA that I have.)

Most of the non- Windows OS phones have some type of app that reads/writes word and PFD.Some are better that others. If it's a must you should get a hands on demo to make sure the phones version of word is livable for you.

I bought a Palm (the one before pre) about 2 summers ago, because I previously had a Palm organizer and I wanted to be able to use the computer link to just transfer the data to the new machine. Also, I was familiar with how Palm worked. I, too, am tempted by the I-phone and it's apps. My son loves his. However, the plan for I-Phone cost a lot more than my Sprint data plan with a family plan for my husband and myself. If the I-Phone becomes Sprint friendly and the price on the monthly cost is comparable, count me as a new I-Phone user.

Price

We priced the Palm Pre plan (family plan we used with Centro won't work with Pre) and Iphone and there wasn't much difference after all was figured in. I had to convince DH to switch from Sprint which we had for quite awhile. Right now I'm on AT and T and husband and son still on Sprint until our contract expires in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the advice, Fred!

next question -- what about syncing with the calendar on my desktop? Right now, I use the calendar in Outlook, but I'd be willing to switch to a different calendar utility if it meant I could have my appointments synced between my desktop and my phone.

Synched my Iphone with the Palm desktop using Google. Believe it also works with Outlook, but didn't have Outlook on this computer.

Nancy

If I understood right you got the Iphone. It syncs very easily with outlook .On my It ouch a pop up asked what to sync when I first set it up. If your going to use the Iphone with different computers you need to read up on it.You have to authorize each PC and there are some settings that need to be adjusted so everything syncs correct.

Which phone did you get?

I carry my Palm 755P phone with the USB cable on vacation so I can use it to get internet access while traveling. Tonight I was on-line and decided to hot-sync the phone with the computer to update and download pictures and learned something pretty cool....

The VZ access software offered to establish a blue tooth link between the phone and computer, essentially a second connection to continue with the on-line access while doing the hotsync at the same time. Hotsync's for me can take a while as I had some video and photos on the phone I hadn't copied over to the computer in quite some time.

Thus, both operations could go on simultaneously and I wasn't knocked off last night while surfing the web. Pretty darn cool!!!

I still use my Palm 755p 24/7 and have for close to 3 years now. It has been the most rock solid & feature packed piece of electronics I have ever used/seen. It STILL does more than any iPhone and is now a 5 year old+ design. While I look forward to a Pre soon I just can't justify it as long as this one works so well.

Bought it

I bought the Palm Pre Plus at Verizon last week. I'm not so sure about it. Right off the bat, I couldn't download the software to transfer the data from my old Palm desktop software for the 755P to the Pre. Spent hours on tech support because they couldn't figure it out either and finally to download Firefox and do a Java update to be able to download and upload and then discovered that the phone didn't have the new software so had to do that too.

First impressions: My fingers keep hitting the wrong icons. I missed calls, have called all sorts of people by mistake. Sent emails by mistake. I'm getting better at it but the main apps buttons, phone, email, contacts, launcher and calendar, along the bottom, are really small and close together and I wish that those had a dedicated button. The menu button at the top left of the screen is so small that I often push something below it. The response to the icons being touched is much slower than with the 755p.

But the biggest problem is that I keep losing the data network. The first time was because I had swiped off a page with what must have been too hard a swipe and turned off the network data usage button. But now, I've lost it three more times today, without turning off that data usage button, and I have to take the battery out, which is very hard with this model, and wait a very long time for it to reboot...much longer than the old Palms. And right now, I still don't have it back. I'm sitting in the exact same spots where I had the service for hours so it's a problem with the phone I think.

I may take it back. But I hate to go through all that nightmare of setting it up again.
