What is so special about ownertrades.com? I emailed several owners that was listed on ownertrades that would be interested in doing a direct exchange into my resort. Never heard back from any of them. Has anyone ever had success using this web site and doing a direct exchange with other Marriott owners?

For some reason, I get no responses either when I emailed the owners from there...not sure why.

When I email Tuggers, I get more replies... :)

I had one successful experience with ownertrades. We exchanged an Ocean Pointe week for a Grande Vista one. It was nice not to have to pay the exchange fee. I do get inquiries from other owners and respond even if it is not a trade we're interested in...common courtesy dictates some response.

Judy,
That's how it's been with us also, we received several responses from our fellow tuggers (we couldn't work out an direct exchange), but heard nothing from anyone from ownertrades.

Ditto here. On the times I tried, I got one response: The person was mad that I was bugging him about an old outdated listing. It's a nice concept, but my experience has been that the database is quite old and not very dynamic.

I posted an Hawaii week for rent on Ownertrades and Redweek at the same time. Never got a peep from the Ownertrades listing. The good news is that I successfully rented the week with the Redweek listing!

When I email ownertrades people, I always say "reply if you're interested," and I don't mind if they don't. I have had a few good contacts, and while no actual trades have come of them, some of them have potential for the future.

I've had a number of contacts from OT, though most seem to be very specific in scope (not flexible), so I've been unable to accomodate them. I do always respond with what I have available, so they know I'm interested and do have something.

We'll be mining OT more now that we're not members of II anymore.

Pat,

Why did you drop II, if you don't mind sharing? Thank you.

I found I could duplicate their services for significantly less money, given the popularity of the intervals we own, combined with our philosophy of occupy or rent. Marriott paid our first year and I opted not to renew. II never made more than a half-hearted attempt to convince me otherwise. The only reason we used them in the first year of ownership was because of occupancy issues at NCV, necessitating exchanges. I have no complaints about II, only that I don't need the service they provide.

Rent Verses Trading With II

I own Marriott Kauai and have come to the same conclusion as Pat. I will either occupy or rent my unit. When I rent my unit I will then rent where I want to go, which maybe another Marriott timeshare. I think it's quicker and makes it easier to plan a trip. I don't like waiting to see if I get the trade I want. This year I had to wait so long I missed out on cheaper airfare. Anyway, that my thoughts at this point. I may change my mind in the future.

Newbie needs info on resales

Hi, I bought a 2 bedroom Gold week in Grand Vista last weekend and am within the 10 day cancellation period. Before I close, I am wondering how hard it is to resell Marriott timeshares in case of emergency and get what you paid out of the sale?

SteveGS,

If you are concerned about selling in an emergency, the first thing I would do is cancel your trade. Now read everything you can on the TUG board, including the section on Buying, selling and renting. IMHO, DO NOT think you can get your purchase price back, especially quickly. Just settlement time will take 60-90 days. Many TUGGERs have their own way of doing their calculations, I personally view my purchase price breakeven period to be 8-10 years. There are many, many factors discussed on these boards, buying from developer vs. resale, incentives, maintainence fees, and frankly how popular a particular resort or area is. While I have seen a tightening up of Orlando, there are many that think it is way overbuilt, and unless you buy your unit at a steal, you'll never get your money back. Some food for thought. BTW, you may want to post your question as a separate post as opposed to within a question about Ownertrades.

Hmmm, well did either you or the other person contact the webmaster (that would be me) and ask him to remove the database record of interest? That would have promptly resulted on one less "outdated" entry. And it would prevent a next searcher from running into that same person's data.

A site like ownertrades.com is what the users make of it. I get a lot of positive feedback about the site, but I also know there is outdated information that no one has bothered to tell me about. For example, every year I send an email to all the members for the sole purpose of finding out what email addresses have gone bad, so I can delete them. There's always a bunch of them. I'm sure there are some right now, but I cant be constanlty bugging everyone with emails for the purpose of keeping addresses up to date. You catch the drift -- the more diligent the members, the better the site.

I'm always interested to hear about ideas for making the site better and can be contacted via my TUG email adress with any such.

One problem mey be the free exchange memberships -- people who dont pay dont really have the same commitment to the site as those who take the paid exchange memberships. Maybe I should do away with the free memberships? But some folks might not like that ---

Hmmm.

flexibility and persistence are key

While I have yet to make any firm direct exchanges from Ownertrades I have started a list of "possibles". Since I know all my 2006 weeks are accounted for, I figure many others are the same. So I work in the distant future--2 or 3 years out. I email those with t/s in the area I'm thinking about (mostly Waiohai and Spain) and let them know my portfolio and ask if they'd be interested in anything. That way I could reserve the timeframe they want and they could look for the timeframe I want.

What I have done in the past is put all contacts in a generic "direct exchange" folder. Looking at it again, I'm going to split that for individual locations so it makes the recontacting easier.

I for one paid my dues and I haven't gotten any trades. In fact I forgot about your site completely after all the folks I contacted turned me down or ignored me. I don't think it is fair that some folks pay and others don't. I vote for payment from everyone so those visiting the site will actually be interested in exchanging their Marriott weeks. BTW, thank you for doing this job. I have had many thankless jobs in my lifetime too. I do appreciate that someone actually is acountable for the site's inner workings. The concept is sound but if users don't want to exchange anymore and tag us along, they should remove their weeks from the pool.

I've been a paid member at ownertrades as long as I've owned Marriott intervals. Those whom I've contacted have always responded and I have always responded to those who've contacted me. The problems getting a successful exchange have always been the same, that being we all have already made specific reservations which didn't match up with the other's needs. I've tried working 2 years in advance in making or accepting requests, but haven't got any cooperation; I assume most folks don't plan that far ahead. I personally won't compromise our excellent rental performance by waiting on an exchanger.

Still a good low-cost alternative to the exchange companies. Maximize the options.

Hi Clark!

Just one of your newest member here...:whoopie:

Maybe you could you ask for confirmation of posting twice a year?

I think that if you explain to the members that this is require to assure the quality and accuracy of the website, people will understand and comply.

Ask and give 30 days each time, if no response then erase posting.

It isn't really a fairness issue since paying members get something non-paying members dont -- access to the search engines. So they can be pro-active in finding an exchange as opposed to just sitting and waiting for someone else to find them.

But what maybe I will do is require all those who signed up for just the free membership some time back, and who have never paid for even one year, to re-sign up if they are still interested in potential exchanges. That will probably weed out those who signed up just because it was free and there was nothing to lose, and then proceeded to forget about it.
