The eye of Hurricane Ike is now projected to pass over my part of town within 48 hours! We are projected to get 90-100 mph winds INLAND.

We bought 80 pieces of plywood for three of us last year and stored it in our warehouse. Now we are digging it out for distibution. My boss picked up three generators yesterday as well.

Just as Bill mentioned in an earlier thread, we too have all vehicle and propane tanks filled and water & food in place. Plywood installation will begin this eveing. :(

The City of Houston closed most operations today and appears will be completely closed tomorrow (as will the mini city in which I live). Though most have left already, essentially now everyone within 10 miles of the coast is being told to evacuate. That amounts to nearly TWO million people evacuating and another 3-1/2 million wondering, "Should I leave?"

Tidal surge in Galveston is projected 12-20'. yIKES!

Terry

P.S. - If you are a stock market player, now would be a good time to short a few insurance and re-insurance companies.

I do want to wish you good luck and safety as I for sure know what you are going thru. I am glad that Hurricane Ike spared my house, but saddened to see it heading your way.

Alos, make sure you have a good pair of work boot type shoes as there are tons of glass and nials debris on the ground after any major storm and tons of people hurt their feet when they step on something wearing sneakers.

This Floridian sure is concerned about those of you in the path of IKE. I sure hope you will be safe and hope something happens to make Ike fizzle out before it gets there. Please do whatever it takes to be safe.

Thanks.

The only thing I forgot at the grocery store was adult beverages. We just finished prepping our offices, getting thinkgs off the floor, disconnecting servers and personal computers (not mine yet) and misc wrapping of file cabitnets etc.. Time to get this show on the road.

Anyhow, y'all look for me on television. I'll be the one outside of the Astrodome waiting for someone to rescue me. NOT!

Take care Terry! I have a buddy over at the DIS boards(non-DVC owner) that lives in Houston too. Her and her hubby own a restaurant and nightclub downtown.

Terry, you're in my thoughts. My DH has been working in Galveston. He got delayed this morning, but is supposed to be on his way home (Ft. Worth area) now. I hesitate to call him because if he's not already on his way, I might not be too happy w/him.

They're still not sure which path it's going to take when it goes inland, but I'm just west of Ft. Worth & one of the predictions said 30 to 40 mph sustained winds w/gusts to 60 mph. For me to be 5 hours from Galveston, that sounds kinda crazy!

Be safe!

Thinz3, my son is at Rice U. Are you near that part of town? It is supposed to be located on high (relatively) ground. The university is preparing the buildings where the students will shelter, boarding up windows and probably getting food and things ready. Son doesn't seem too concerned. I on the other hand ...

Looks like Ike is turning into YIKES! DH has been working there but is in New Jersey this week. He's scheduled to go back next week--if y'all are still there.

We have family in Pensacola. Hope they will be alright.

Just finished boarding up Dear MIL's house and will do the back side of my own tomorrow. Freeways are clearing in town but are very heavy out of town, 30+ miles. Everybody on the coast seems to have left in a very orderly manner (except for a few stubborn people). Galveston had 100 busses hauling thousands of residents to Austin, 10 busses at a time with a police escort. It was impressive.

Looking back, this storm seems very similar to Hurricane Alicia 25 years ago. My DW and I were dating at the time, and I drove to her house during the eye of the storm. Lots of damage back then and Houston has tripled in size since. We should start getting tropical storm force winds in th morning. I'll keep you posted.

I do not want anyone to think were in SE Texas are the only ones having problems. Huricane force winds are now 220 miles wide. Hurricane IKE is not the most organized storm, but it is HUGE. There are storm surge warnings from Destin to Corpus Christie.

Yes VERY close to us. That IS the part of town we live in. You son should be fine. He is lucky as he WON"T have to clean up the debris, but I will. Rice U will only flood if we have very large amounts of rain - no tidal surge or bayou problems. I know how you feel worrying about the kids, I have one at A&M and another at TCU. Both will also have some bad weather. During Alicia the Dallas area had more tornadoes than Houston did with a direct hit.

If you absolutely have an emergency need, PM me.

We are on the edge of the evacuation zone and have prepared to shelter in place. Stocked up the propane & water. Filled the car with Gas. We have a backup generator installed but haven't been able to get the propane company to hook up the main tank so we will be running off of the 20# tanks - at least the food won't spoil & we will have water from the well.

The evacuation is much more organized than Rita - it is slow heading north and west but is moving and at least is not grid locked.

Tomorrow morning early we will batten down the hatches - so to speak. Bring in the lawn furniture & board up the windows. Some models predict we will get 80-110 mph winds, other models 60-75 mph winds - I am hoping for the latter. Would hate if the power went out for an extended period - worse if we lose the internet - what would I do with no TUG fix:eek:

It was very strange today in the grocery store - there was not one loaf of bread, not one banana and no water other than the individual bottles.

I am on call for the state emergency response team - I hope I don't get called out but will go where needed.

We just got back from South Padre Island a day early. We are southwest of Houston. I just heard on weather that IKE might come in as a strong Cat 2 or almost a Cat 3. That is better from what they were predicting a Cat 4. And yes, I do remember Hurricane Alicia. we did not have any damage with that hurricane.

Everyone stay safe!!

Best of Luck!!

Looks as if it will also pass west of far-western Kentucky, but should be worn out to a nub by then.
Hope all goes well and the plywood holds!!

I was watching NBC this morning and they were showing the waves hitting and splashing over the Galveston seawall. To put things into perspective, that walls i 16-1/2 feet above sea level.

Terry,

I've been thinking about you and all those along the Texas coast. Last night, my husband and I prayed for a weakened and compressed storm so it does minimal damage. My SIL (husband's sis) is in League City and I used Google maps to see where she is in relation to the coast. She is directly on the projected path. They evacuated.

Be safe, be smart, God will be looking out for you.

Latest information is a 20-foot surge That 17-foot Galveston seawall will almost surely be overtopped, resulting in flooding of the entire island.

I saw the Galveston seawall already under water with the waves now. The storm still has 12 - 14 hours until landfall. It does not look good for Galveston. Galveston Bay and Houston are also in trouble as the store is predicted to hit just west of Galeveston bay, the right quadrant of the storm is where it packs a punch and that is looking like galveston bay will get all the water from this massive storm pushed up into it. That is what happened with Katrina and New Orleans, the storm surge pushed all the water up into Lake Ponchatrain. (did I spell that right?)

You have my thoughts and prayers.

We survived Hurricane Ike with only a small amount of damage. Downed fences, water leaks, broken limbs and minor roof damage were the extent of it for mr. We are still without power and are thanking the Lord that a cool front blew in, or we would all be suffering worse than we are.

Our brethren to the south, however, didn't fair nearly as well. Bolivar penensula (across the ferry from Galveston) was literally washed off the map. Our relatives near the coast had major damage as well. BIL had 8' of water while my wife's cousin had 4' and her uncle had a tree on top of his house.

I had 14 people staying with me during the storm and the night following the storm. It was that second night that we lost power and have been without for 36 hours since. I have a generator to run the refridgerator and television, so I personally am better off than most.

The FAA had a flight restriction over the entire Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula for two days. We had no idea what the outcome was - it was very frustrating. Anyhow, everyone has left our house and returned back to their own homes, most without power.

It looks like a third world country with people waiting in lines for hours just trying to get the basics: water, ice, milk, bread, gasoline and prepared foods. I have never seen anything like it. Police officers are basically directing traffic at every open gas station. The indians are getting restless to say the least. Houston's Mayor basically told the Governor to stay in Austin and keep out of our affairs. The Mayor has been dealing with FEMA for years now (since Katrina) and did not want a middle man. It was kind of funny to see our tough, cowboy Governor squirming on television.

Things are crasy on the streets. The entire Greater Houston Area has a curfew. No one allowed on the streets between 9pm and 6am. Crime thus for is actually lower than before the hurricane. :)

My DD and I waited outside of a BBQ restaurant Sunday for over an hour trying to buy 5 pounds of smoked beef. The restaurant had NO POWER, but could still smoke meats on their pit. Funny thing was, the owner had his ten year old son working the cash only register and the customer had to tell the kid how much change to give. Everything was rounded off to the nearest dollar, no questions asked. It was actually kind of neat. Yesterday, I went to Home Depot and there were about 90 people waiting in line OUTSIDE the store. I turned around and went back home.

As of last night about 1.6 millions customers (approximately 4.8 million people) still had no power, but that was .5 million better than the day before. I am hoping to go home this evening and see lights on at my house. We shall see.

Glad you are doing as well as you are.

We were wondering how you managed and it sounds like you are doing pretty well. Son at Rice weathered hurricane Ike fine. The students were asked to be in their college shelters by early evening on Friday and were kept there until the next afternoon. They played video games, watched movies, studied, tried to sleep. The lights flickered some but they never lost power because Rice has its own power plant which they used when the power in the area went out.

The next afternoon after Ike had passed through, the students got out to check their rooms. The first floor windows had been boarded up but son lives on third floor, but everything was ok. No windows were blown out. My son said there was some damage to the beautiful live oaks, lots and lots of tree limbs down and some trees uprooted and there was some minor damage to some buildings. On Sunday the students helped clean up and clear tree limbs and debris from the roads and walkways on campus.

All in all, the university was really well prepared to deal with the storm. The President of Rice sent several emails to the parents which were informative and reassuring and the Rice website was frequently updated with how the students and campus were faring which we really appreciated. Classes resumed on Tuesday so their lives are getting back to normal.

Hi Terry,

Our prayers for you worked!

Just curious . . . how can you use the internet without power? I know you probably have a laptop on battery power, but I'm wondering if the internet works without power. I don't think mine would because it is cable.
